¨  ON-BOARD TRIP INFORMATION   ¨

The Qualifier 105’s  personal gear list provides our anglers with recommended clothing and sundries.  We      suggest that you use this list as a basis for your packing.   Our recommendations are just that, some anglers  will find that we have included too much gear and others will find important items that are not included.  If you need advice or have any questions, the office and deck crew are available.  Our purpose is to optimize and prepare you for your long range adventure

Luggage

Soft duffel bags best for storage in your stateroom

Shorts, Pants and Shirts

Bring a change for each day of the trip.  Remember the clothing you fish in, can be permanently stained.   Long sleeves if you are sun sensitive.

Sweatshirts & Jackets

It can be cold out on the ocean especially after sundown.  We recommend 2 sweatshirts with a wind resistant jacket to go over.  Official Qualifier 105 gear insures that you stay warm and catch more fish.!

Socks

One pair per day with extras, it is a wet environment

Foot wear

One pair short  “comfortable” rubber boots.  If you fish in sneakers two pair, if not, one will do.  Please no sandals while fishing.

Sunglasses w/ strap, Hat & Sunscreen

Even on a cloudy day the UV reflecting off the ocean can be extreme.  Polarized glasses and maximum strength sunscreen

Light Rain Gear

Rarely used, but welcome when needed

Toiletries & Prescription Medications

Tackle Recommendations

¨  3 TO 6 DAY TRIP - RODS AND REELS   ¨

When you are looking to purchase new gear; the rods, reels and monofilament pound test that are recommend in the list will form a foundation for discussing tackle purchases with a reputable tackle store representative. Comparable products by other manufacturers can be recommended by your favorite tackle store. Take your time and feel comfortable about purchasing your rods and reels because they are very expensive and should not be bought in haste. If you need the name and phone number of a tackle store in your area, please call the office.  Click here for tackle recommendations

¨  7 TO 12 DAY TRIP - RODS AND REELS   ¨

For longer trips we recommend the incorporation of three more rigs to your quiver of rods and reels. These rigs all have Berkley Trilene’s Hollow Braid Spectra backing with mono filament top shots. Roller guides, gimbals and reel seats with clamps are recommended for your rods. When you fish with heavy gear, large forces are exerted. You need to practice with your rod and reel in conjunction with your harness in the calm atmosphere of your garage, rather than when 100 pound plus fish are rolling through the corner. Be proficient, in casting sardine and mackerel size baits, moving your rod into your gimbal, after imitating hooking a fish, going from high gear to low and then pulling with the gear. Practicing on your car or a low eyehook attached to the wall is a great imitation for fishing heavy cows. Set your drag so that line will peel off when you lift and get comfortable with your gear!  Click here for tackle recommendations

¨  7 TO 16 DAY TRIP - TERMINAL TACKLE   ¨

When you make the decision to sail on a longer trip you increase the possible geographic limits of your trip and the terminal tackle requirements will increase to meet the new demands of Wahoo and Giant Yellowfin Tuna fishing. However, the terminal tackle list from 3 to 6 day trips remains in force and you will only need to add a few new items. Again the Southern California tackle stores are well know for their professionalism, they want your repeat business and will give you good advice.  There are manufacturers, styles of terminal tackle that will vary from our list. The personnel preference of your tackle store representative is as good as our own.  Click here for tackle recommendations.
