Tackle Recommendations

¨  3 TO 6 DAY TRIP - RODS AND REELS   ¨

When you are looking to purchase new gear; the rods, reels and monofilament pound test that are recommend in the list will form a foundation for discussing tackle purchases with a reputable tackle store representative. Comparable products by other manufacturers can be recommended by your favorite tackle store. Take your time and feel comfortable about purchasing your rods and reels because they are very expensive and should not be bought in haste. If you need the name and phone number of a tackle store in your area, please call the office. Click Here

¨  7 TO 12 DAY TRIP - RODS AND REELS   ¨

For longer trips we recommend the incorporation of three more rigs to your quiver of rods and reels. These rigs all have Berkley Trilene’s Hollow Braid Spectra backing with mono filament top shots. Roller guides, gimbals and reel seats with clamps are recommended for your rods. When you fish with heavy gear, large forces are exerted. You need to practice with your rod and reel in conjunction with your harness in the calm atmosphere of your garage, rather than when 100 pound plus fish are rolling through the corner. Be proficient, in casting sardine and mackerel size baits, moving your rod into your gimbal, after imitating hooking a fish, going from high gear to low and then pulling with the gear. Practicing on your car or a low eyehook attached to the wall is a great imitation for fishing heavy cows. Set your drag so that line will peel off when you lift and get comfortable with your gear! ¨  3 TO 6 DAY TRIP - TERMINAL TACKLE   ¨

Over many years we have noticed that first time long range anglers have a tendency to bring more terminal tackle than is necessary. “I better have it… just in case” is the mentality that rules the day. The list we have developed will cover your needs on 99% of your terminal tackle needs on a long-range trip. The Southern California tackle stores are well know for their professionalism, and they always provide good advice. There are manufacturers, styles of terminal tackle that will vary from our list. The personnel preferences of your tackle store representative are as valid as our own. Click Here

¨  7 TO 16 DAY TRIP - TERMINAL TACKLE   ¨

When you make the decision to sail on a longer trip you increase the possible geographic limits of your trip and the terminal tackle requirements will increase to meet the new demands of Wahoo and Giant Yellowfin Tuna fishing. However, the terminal tackle list from 3 to 6 day trips remains in force and you will only need to add a few new items. Again the Southern California tackle stores are well know for their professionalism, they want your repeat business and will give you good advice.  There are manufacturers, styles of terminal tackle that will vary from our list. The personnel preference of your tackle store representative is as good as our own. Click Here

Skiff/Kayak/Fish The Mother-Ship to San Clemente

Spring Trips

3 day to 8 day trips

Skiff/Kayak/Mother-Ship trips, as well as our traditional 5-8 Days

Fish Targeted: Bluefin, Albacore, Yellowtail, Yellow fin, Dorado, Calico, White Sea Bass, and more

Skiff/Kayak-Mother-Ship Trips

Fishing from skiffs is one of the best unexploited fisheries on the Mexican Coast. The lack of fishing pressure

makes these trips unforgettable.Imagine 2-8 lb. Calico Bass erupting on surface iron,

 exploding and hammering on swimbaits.

Experience 15-30 lb. Yellowtail boiling around the Q105 while fishing on the calm waters

of a rugged Baja coastal Island

Add in trophy Yellowtail, White Seabass and Halibut and your trip is complete.

You will be one of the only 18 anglers on board.

With 9 anglers in skiffs and captains and only 9 on the Qualifier 105.,

 uncrowded fishing conditions prevail.

Big Hammer/Fisherman’s Hardware: Skiff/Kayak Coastal

8-Day-Lv. Fri. May 28th-2010

The Santa Barbra guys and charter master Peter Wolf
The Big Hammer Skiff/Kayak is a combination trip with both Kayaks and Skiffs. If you are a ‘fisherman’, you have to experience a skiff trip at least once in your long-range career. If you are like most long-range anglers, having experienced this fishing once, you will just have to return from time to time. Skiff trips are an incredible experience where you truly will have a chance to catch your personal best of Yellowtail, Halibut, White Sea Bass and Calico Bass. Even when you are not out in a kayak or a skiff you will be fishing onboard the Q-105    www.bighammer.com

Fish Trap Lures Skiff Trip : 7-Day Coastal - Lv. Sat. June 5th

Barry Brightenburg is sponsoring the ever-popular fish trap lures skiff trip. This trip is a limited angler load, maxing out at 18 paid anglers. These trips target Calico Bass, Yellowtail, and other sport fish in unspoiled areas off the Baja coast. Skiff trips provide anglers the opportunity to fish in areas that the big boat cannot access. Barry conducts nightly raffles and brings supplies of top quality products including but not limited to: Shimano, P-line fishing line, Fish Trap Lures, Fish Work Clothing and many more. Barry has been acknowledged as being very generous with his supply of Fish trap lures because anglers fly though them quickly, and it is hard to find a more productive lure while fishing the kelp and boiler rocks. For any fisherman these trips are extraordinary, for the Calico Bass enthusiast this is the trip you will not want to miss. Barry is the originator of our skiff fishing concept. www.fishtraplures.com

Dreaming of BIG ONES,
Dallas Lamb
Chartermaster

AHI History The AHI trip has been running since1990 and was originally founded by, Pete Gray (Lets Talk Hookup Fame) Dallas Lamb and Gary Vanderlyke, as a three-day trip. After three successful years of finding "a _ _ holes" and convincing them to take a fishing trip, Gary and Dallas decided to take over the Invitational. There have been many memorable trips aboard the Qualifier 105, including the infamous Bluefin trip.  Gary "The Cowboy" is quoted as saying he loves the boat more than his own home. Gary has amazing patience and is always willing to answer any angler’s questions. Dallas, well anyone who knows him, knows the huge effort this guy makes to put together a "Show" with great music and all kinds of "What happens on the boat stays on the boat" silliness. with trophies and much much more. Come and join the fun.

Woww! That was a mouthful. Schmidt

Coastside: 2010

Coastside is a relatively new trip compared to many of our other sponsored trips, only starting about five years ago. However, it is wildly popular and tends to fill extremely fast. Bob Franko the founder of Coastside has been fishing with the Qualifier 105 since its first year at sea and decided along with charter masters Chris Hall to create a 5-day summer and a 10-day fall trip aboard the boat. The trip is sponsored by Hi’s Tackle and WFO sport fishing, which kindly donates tackle boxes, terminal gear, and rods and reels for raffles and give a ways. Prizes are also awarded daily for the biggest fish. Chris estimates that this year will probably bring $2000-$3000 worth of prizes. Coastside has more than 20,000 active members; so if this sounds like the trip for you, make your reservation now. Coastside will also be running a 15 day in April of 2010 and is on stand by status. Check our schedule for dates as these trips fill fast. Chartermasters:  Chris Hall and Ben Sleeter

John Baker owner of Baker’s Reels will be teaming up with Curtis Owens representative from Performance Tackle in order to host the last November trip of the year. 2009 will be John’s 4th year as a sponsor for the Qualifier 105. A few years ago, Harvey Siegel (a staple of the Qualifier 105) suggested that John form his own trip. John estimates this year that he will be bringing a minimum of $2000 worth of merchandise for give a ways and raffles. Since he is a reel manufacturer, there will be special reel and frame give a ways along with the usual tee shirts and terminal tackle raffles. Performance Tackle located in Los Alamos California previously sponsored 7-day trips for 9 years. After a brief hiatus, they are itching to get back on the Qualifier 105 for some fishing fun. Performance Tackle will be working with their vendors in order to bring many goodies and give away. This will be a perfect trip to get away during the holiday season, do not get stuck eating cold turkey and watching football game highlight reruns! This will be a trip that will not be forgotten for many years to come. John and Curtis have added 2 more days of fishing for 2009.

This 10 day trip is now a 12 day trip. Two more days to get the big ones. This trip generally gets the cows 200LB/300 LB. If you want to do a personal best sign up now as this trip is very popular. www.charkbait.com www.performancetackle.com
