ETA for Nov 22
is going to be at 7 am. See you guys there!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 8, Friday 11-19-11
This morning we rolled into the "yellowtail island" that
we like to fish. It was around 8 am when we started to look
around. We found some huge spots of mackerel and there were
some yellows with it. The amount of bait around was
impressive to say the least. With fish under us, we started
to fish and catch right away. The fish were not up on the
surface so the yo-yo jigs and dropper loop rigs were the hot
ticket. We had stops for a box of fish here and there and
some stops not a bite. It was a good fishing day overall and
we have a good load of fish and all our anglers are happy to
have a good amount of fish on board. We will be staying here
for tomorrow and hoping for a repeat of yesterday. Then
Sunday night we will be on the road for home with a rock cod
stop planned for Monday morning. More later, the Q crew's
out!!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 7, Friday 11-18-11
We had a very busy day today. First thing this morning
we put the anchor over and started to catch yellowtail right
away. We had good fishing for a couple hours and then they
backed off. We pulled the anchor, moved a short distance,
and found some tuna. That was a good thing since we have not
landed a lot of tuna this trip. We have some big fish but
not all anglers had tuna so we were happy to find some. They
were not big but we needed them bad. All the guys landed a
bunch of fish and we are stoked. A couple fish for the
galley and a bunch down into the well to get cold. Tomorrow
we are going to be up north and fishing for yellows.
Everyone is happy, the weather's good and so is the company.
More tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 6, Thursday 11-17-11
Today was a tough day. We had great conditions today;
weather and sea were on our side however, the fish had other
plans. We saw a great amount of fish today but they would
not bite. At time we had 200 lb + fish around and under us
but they had lockjaw. We did get a school of dodo's that
wanted to bite. We ended up with as many fish as we needed
and went of for more tuna. It was late in the day before we
hooked one. Paul Weber was the angler and he made short work
of the thing. A fish around 140 or so was on the boat in no
time. A great job done by Paul and we were off to find more.
No such luck, a couple more of those spots of fish that were
not biting and it is time to head north. Tomorrow we will
fish up near the ridge for a mix bag. We could use it. We
will report more later. The Q crew's out!!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 5, Wednesday 11-16-11
We awoke this morning with a few of our friends around
us and started fishing. For a while, we did not see anything
but after an hour or so of light, we hooked a few fish. We
did not have great fishing today but a few anglers made the
most of their chance at fish. Scott Batchelder had one and
so did Ray Griffin, Mike Goldedx, Dale Horton, Ross
Yasukochi and Gary Schall. We will stay here for the night
and hope for more fish tomorrow. Our weather is great, the
group is having good times, and we are looking forward to a
great fishing trip for the next few days. Wish us luck, The
Q crew's out!!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 4, Tuesday 11-15-11
We arrived in the area we wanted to start and found a
spot of black porpoise. After some time drifting and seeing
fish, we hooked one. Jack Sowell was the lucky angler. He
hooked the fish on 100 lb gear and this fish put the gear to
the test. It made a run out off the bow and would give Jack
a bunch of line then take it and more right back. It was a
battle to say the least. The fish ended up in the starboard
corner and went straight down. Before long we knew something
was up, the fish had died. With the right tackle and a
strong back, Jack gave us the shot to gaff the fish. We
pulled it on the boat and the fish will be around 200 lbs. A
nice way to start our fishing with a cow for our first fish
of the trip. We will spend the night and report more later,
the Q crew's out!!!
Coastside 10
day, day 3, Monday 11-14-11
Yesterday and today were spent rigging tackle and
swapping stories of past trips. Besides the coastside guys
we have a group that has fished the AHI trips in the past.
We also have Cowboy and his gang that fished the Gary Shall
- Firefighter trip this year. They were here for our grouper
bite we had this past summer, which stories been told a few
times so far. Today we rigged up our big gear, let's hope we
need it since we are going straight to the big fish zone of
lower Baja. Our weather has gotten better all the time and
we should all have a nice tan for Thanksgiving. We are going
to arrive around mid morning on Tuesday and will report more
after our first day of fishing for trophie size yellow fin
tuna. The Q crew's out!!!
Coastside 10
day, Day 1, Saturday 11-12-11
We pulled into our slip this morning to unload the gang
from, Cowboy - Baja Fish Gear in the rain. Congratulations
to our jackpot winners, Gary Gelson, Dennis Murphy, and
Frank Baldwin, they all landed big tuna in the 180 lb range.
Also Donna Matuszak had a big one on the kite. A good catch
unloaded we fueled and loaded some groceries then the group
from Coastside boarded and we were off again for ten days.
The weather was bad on the way out tonight and a few missed
dinner because they were a little green. We are going to
travel south tomorrow and get all our gear ready for any
fish we will encounter this next 10 days. A bunch of
regulars are on the big Q. Coastside chartermasters Cris
Hall and Dale Myer are here. Pierre Granier, Ray and Warren
Griffin, Jim Kirk, and Paul Weber are past Coastside charter
fishermen. Others that ride the boat are, Tim Arnoux, Darryl
Despie, Mike Golden, Hal Smith, Jack Sowell and Ross
Yasukochi. A couple of our other chartermasters are here for
another trip before the end of the year; Gary Schall and
Cowboy (Gary Vander Lyke) are with us again. Cowboy had to
miss his trip so he made it out with us for this one, we are
glad he's here!! A big thanks to Steve Puckett from Baja
Fish Gear for a great trip and the giveaways for all last
trip. Check out Baja Fish Gear on-line for all your tackle
needs. We will travel tomorrow and report more later, the Q
crew's out!!!
Cowboy -
Baja Fish Gear 10 day, day 8, Thursday 11-10-11
We had a phone issue yesterday so we will report for
Wednesday and Thursday. Yesterday we rolled north looking at
the high spots along the ridge. The weather was nice and
fishing was just OK. We wanted some tuna but they have not
been around in numbers. We did scratch some more yellows and
finally at the end of the day we found some tuna. Not as
many as we would like but we tagged a few. They were around
15 to 20 lbs and the anglers that tagged them were happy.
For Thursday, we headed north in the morning and rolled into
an island for some yellowtail. We only had a few hours to
fish and we did our best. First drift we found some that
wanted to bite. For the afternoon, we made some drifts and
tagged some more fish for the gang. We have a good load of
fish and are going to be in early on Saturday morning. The
weather is going to be rainy on Saturday from what we hear
so wear your rain jacket and come on down and check out our
load of fish. More later, the Q crew's out!!!
Cowboy -
Baja Fish Gear 10 day, day 7, Tuesday 11-08-11
We traveled up the line last night nice and easy. The
weather was not good so we rolled slow and easy as to not
pound the boat. The sleeping last night was tough to say the
least. You would start to sleep and then the boat would drop
out from beneath you and boom you we wide awake right now.
It finally mellowed out right at first light, just enough to
fish. We were in search of Dorado today. We found some but
like the other day, they were not eager to bite. We did
scratch fish up all day but a big school would swim by and
just keep going. The fish we did land were big, some 20 to
30 lbs. David Echeverria landed one around 35 lbs today,
that's a big fish for a Dorado. Yesterday he hooked a marlin
on 40 lb test. David fought it for a little while pulling it
to the boat. After a couple pictures of the fish next to the
boat, we let the fish go. Everyone here has a nice catch of
fish and will have a nice stash for the winter. We are
fishing the ridge tomorrow and will report more then. The Q
crew's out!!!
Cowboy -
Baja Fish Gear, day 6, Monday 11-07-11
Last night we rolled into the big fish zone and dropped
the anchor. It was around 1 am and it was windy choppy and
deep water. We had a hell of a time getting the anchor to
hold but after an hour or so of dragging then stopping then
dragging then stopping we hung. The weather was bad in the
morning but we made the most of it. For the day, we only had
5 bites, landed 4 of those fish and split to the north in
the afternoon. Frank Baldwin started us off with a big fish.
Then Dennis Murphy hooked and landed a nice one. Next was
Donna Manuszak with a big toad, and the last was Gary Gelson
with a fish that had a lot of heart. It took a few laps
around the boat and was not coming up to color. When it did
it was a brute staying at deep color forever. Finally, we
gaffed the thing and pulled it over the rail to some high
fives. We are not staying here. The amount of fish is not
enough to keep us here. We will head up tonight. More later,
the Q crew's out!!
Cowboy -
Baja fish Gear 10 day, day 5, Sunday 11-06-11
Off shore is what we were doing today. We stayed on our
course south and looked for Dorado today. We found some bird
schools that we thought for sure would have fish. The birds
were frigget birds and they were picking small fish off
balls of what appeared to be needlefish. The Dorado was not
there. A couple miles to the south we found a temp break and
saw some fish jumping in the warmer water. It was game on a
couple stops with all aboard hooking fish. The fish were
nice dodo's. The problem was they would charge the boat and
then split just as fast. In all we landed a nice catch today
and we are all happy. Chef Brett is keeping us all fat and
happy in the galley and we are having a blast. Tomorrow we
are in search of some big fish, more then. The Q crew's
out!!!
Cowboy -
Baja Fish Gear 10 day, day 4, Saturday 11-05-11
Today we worked our way south in good weather and a great
group. We were looking for kelps and whatever else we could
find floating. A few blind jig strikes here and there, a
couple kelps and some bird schools were what we found. The
fishing was a little slow until we tossed the anchor over at
a high spot. There was a nice mix of fish, dodo's yellows
and a handful of tuna, blue fin tuna! For the day, we had
some action and tagged fish to put in the holds, a good day
here on the big Q. We will be continuing our journey to the
south tonight. More later, the Q crew's out!!!
Cowboy, Baja
Fish Gear 10 day, day 3, Friday 11-04-11
We arrived at the island last night just after dark and
dropped the anchor. A nice night on the anchor and everyone
was up early. It took till gray light for the first fish to
strike. After that, we had steady action all morning. The
gang all had fish with a few near a limit. Hot sticks today
were Mark Oliver, Scott Smith, and Jeff Bracey, these guys
were hooked up all morning long. We have a few guys on their
first trip and they figured it out today. Rick Jr and Sr
Bunnell and Jason Bunnell are having a blast and drove down
from Oregon for their first trip on a long-range boat.
Seymour, Eric and Raymond Lesonsky also did well today. In
all it was an outstanding day of fishing. We are just
starting the trip so having a nice load of fish in the well
already is perfect. If we can duplicate our last trip, these
guys will have a nice catch of fish. We are headed south
tonight and will be off shore looking for kelps tomorrow
hoping that a few wahoo and or dodo's can be captured. Until
then, the Q crew's out!!!
Cowboy, Baja
Fish Gear 10 day, day 2, Thursday 11-03-11
We trolled our way south today with good weather. After a
seminar on tackle, we spent the day rigging up our gear for
the next 9 days of fishing. A couple of blind jig strikes
and a few bait fishes on those stops were our fish for the
day, most everyone had a fish and a couple guys had 2 or 3.
That’s OK for a travel day. We will be at an island looking
for yellowtail tomorrow, more then. The Q crew's out!!!
Cowboy,
Baja Fish Gear 10 day, day 1, Wednesday 11-02-11
We arrived in San Diego early this morning and unloaded
our group from Save On Tackle. We had 4 fish over 200 lbs
and a few very close, congratulations to our j.p. winners.
We then loaded the group of Cowboy/Baja Fish Gear. We have a
great group on board but Cowboy could not make it and we
will miss him this trip. Steve Puckett is here from Baja
Fish Gear and has a load of stuff to give away tomorrow
during our tackle seminar. We have good weather and good
bait and will be headed south. Our group is mostly guys (and
Donna) that have ridden the boat for years. Hoss Aubuchon,
Phil Baily, Frank and Vince Baldwin, Jeff Bracey, Jim Chivas,
Don Culbertson,John Edwards, Boss Hoag, Seymour, Eric and
Ray Lesonsky, Donna Manuszak Dennis Murphy, Mark Oliver,
Vince Sloan, Doc Smith and Scott Smith are all return
passengers. We have 10 day to put some fish on board and we
will report more lately. The Q crew's out!!!!

Tackle 10 day, day 9, Monday 10-31-11
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! Today we did a few boat tasks and the
guys all just took it easy. A couple poker games and movies
were the thing to do today. We have great weather for our
travels and we will be listening to the football game
tonight. The wheelhouse should be packed since the Chargers
are playing. We are planning to get to our slip at Point
Loma Sport-fishing Wednesday at 6 am. If any thing changes,
we will let you know, The Q crew's out!!!!!

Tackle 10 day, day 7, Saturday 10-29-11
Last night we rolled into an area we hooped would put
some tuna on the boat. Our plans worked out, big time. With
the sun just coming up it was game on. The first fish we
hooked was a good one, then another and then a couple more.
Before we knew it, we had 6 or 7 fish hooked. Cris Cain,
David Taylor, Tocy Lin, Eric Davies and Joe Dorando all had
good fish in the first round. Ernie Beltran had one on for a
couple of hours and it was a heart breaker, breaking the
line only 40 or so feet from the boat, a cow for sure. Cody
Smith also had a heart breaker. He hooked a fish around 9:45
am. He had a war with this fish, he would get a bunch of
line only to have the fish come up to the surface and make a
run out away from the boat. This fish stayed up on the
surface for most of the fight. After lunch, thats right
after lunch, he finally had the fish to the boat we all had
a good look at the fish, it was about 10 feet out of gaff
range and it was a mean one. It circled for about 30 or 40
minutes just out of reach. Thats when the line broke and the
fish freed its self. A 4-hour fight and it was over in a
heartbeat, Cody took it well and did a great job on that
fish. Joe Dorando, Greg Burgio, Jeff Vocelka, and a few
other all had nice fish today. We ended with 4 fish over 200
lbs today. A great trip and we will be ending our fishing in
the morning and headed north after that. Till tomorrow, the
Q crew's out!!!
Save On Tackle 10 day, day 6, Friday 10-28-11
Today we headed south with tuna being the fish we want
the most. In our travels, we were in search mode and we
found plenty. A couple kelps and a lot of birds and porpoise
kept us in search mode for the right one. In the late
morning, we saw a bunch of Dorado’s jumping around in a
small little area out in front of us. We all said, "There
must be something floating over there". As we got a little
closer, we saw a school of Dorado’s that was huge. The fish
were all good size wanted to bite. It was crazy for about an
hour, every bait that hit the water was an immediate bite.
Some guys had a limit and those that did not chose not to.
We even have a few for a meal from Chef Brett. Over all it
was a good day and everyone now has all the dorado and
yellowtail they want. We will be in search of some tuna
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!

Tackle 10 day, day 4, 10-26-11
Today we were headed south in the morning and looking
for kelps. We found a few and had some good Dorado fishing.
The first little kelp we found had a few, the next same
thing. Then we found the right one. This one was loaded with
big ball slappers! It was a short time of wide-open fishing.
The fish were big with a few going 30 lbs or more. Tocy Lin,
Danny Jimenez, Cris Cain and Greg Burgio all had some nice
fish. David Taylor, Jeff and Pete Vocelka and Cody Smith all
did well also. In the afternoon, we headed to the west to
try and find some tuna or a couple more kelps. No luck on
the tuna but a few more dodo's were tagged. For tomorrow we
are headed to the rocks for a good look there. Wish us luck,
till tomorrow the Q crew's out!!!

Tackle 10 day, day 3, Tuesday 10-25-11
This morning we started out at a beautiful little island
down the Baja coast. It was game on today. The fish were
eager to bite and our gangs were eager to tag some
yellowtail. Ernie Beltran, Greg Burgio, Cris Cain, Charles
Eng, Danny Jimenez, Rich White and Dave Tylor were few of
the guys that had a very good day. For today, we ended up
with a few at limits for yellowtail and the rest are doing
ok also. Not bad for early in the trip. We will be headed
south tonight and will be looking our way south for some
kelps tomorrow with plans on tagging some tuna, Dorados and
wahoo, let's hope it all works out like we hope. Till
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!!

Tackle 10 day, day 2, Monday 10-24-11
We are back after some time off. Our trip is the Save On
Tackle 10 day trip. We departed yesterday. We decided even
though it is a 10-day trip, we should start in an area close
to home that has seen tuna the last few days. At first
light, we put the trollers in the water. After only a short
wait we started to hook fish, some stops would result in 1
or 2 fish and a few stops were a little better. The day was
a success and just about everyone tagged a couple fish with
a few guys tagging more then that. Dave Taylor is here as
chartermaster-representing Save On Tackle. We had a raffle
and all received a goodie bag. We are happy to be back on
the water and will report more tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
ETA for tomorrow (for the MC Swimbaits/Skiff/Kayak)
will be between 8-9 am.
M.C.
Swimbaits 7 day, day 6, Thursday 9-22-11
It was all about the bass this morning, we unloaded the
skiffs and kayaks and started to catch bass right away. It
was good until about 9:30 then it just stopped biting. We
were able to pick the bass but the every cast stuff stopped.
We put the big boat just outside the kelp and we landing
some nice big yellows also. Louie Zimm, a longtime Q
fisherman was our guest deckhand today and he is quick on
his feet. He was running around gaffing, tagging and
dropping the fish in a heartbeat. The bass fishing was good
again today with a lot of 5 to 8 lb fish. The calico fishing
in the skiffs is as fun as it gets when they are biting
good. Dave Klein is up to a limit of yellows as are a few
others. Some guys only want a few and they are happy. We
have had a good trip and are headed north tonight, more
later, the Q crews out!!!
M.C.Swimbaits 7 day skiff / kayak trip, day 5, Wednesday
9-21-11
It was a good day of fishing for all of us today, skiffs,
kayaks, and the big boat all did well. In the kayaks, the
guys did good on the calico's with some very good flurries.
All the bass were released; a couple yellowtails however had
a tag put on them. Ken Marple landed a couple of big yellows
today on his kayak, not an easy job to do out of the kayak.
The skiffs saw some good bass fishing and for those that
chose to chase yellows that also worked out well. Kevin
Mattson landed a few, Keith Byrne had one as did, Dave
Campbell and Rick Gonzales. The big boat chased schools of
yellowtail around and everyone had a chance to tag a couple
more for the freezer. We will remain in this area tonight,
more tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
M.C.
Swimbaits 7 day, day 4, Tuesday 9-20-11
We had a little delay this morning with a medical issue with
one of our guests. After we took care of the situation, we
went fishing. It was decided that the kayaks would go in the
water but the skiffs would not. Therefore, with that done we
went to find some yellowtail with the big boat. The plastic
boats had good fishing and so did the big aluminum one. We
had yellowtail for everyone on the big boat, it was run and
gun type fishing, find a spot and hook some fish but they
would swim away quick and we would have to chase schools
around. We managed to get a good number of them for our
light load on the Q. The kayaks had decent fishing for bass
in the kelp. We will be here tomorrow for what we hope is a
full day of fishing. Everyone is having fun and we have good
weather, till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
M.C.
Swimbaits 7 day, day 3, Monday 9-19-11
This morning we dropped the skiffs and kayaks in early. The
weather was good and the fishing was so-so. The kayak gang
went to the inside of the kelp and picked away slowly at
some bass. The skiffs had the same results. The fish were
there but had lockjaw. We made a couple runs and then ran a
few miles to set up for tomorrow, hopefully with better
results, the Q crew's out.
M.C.
Swimbaits, day 2, Sunday 9-18-11
This morning at about 7:30, we pulled into one of the reefs
down the Baja coast. It is a great area for calico bass. We
dropped the kayaks and skiffs in and started fishing. We had
slow fishing over all with poor conditions, off color water,
no current, and bait in abundance. The bass were reluctant
to bite. One standout fish was landed today; Kevin Mattson
landed a bass on the M.C. swimbait that was #10.2 on the
scale before being released. We made one run and headed
south to set up for tomorrow. More then, the Q crew's out!!
M.C.
Swimbaits 7 day skiff trip, day 1, Saturday 9-17-11
We are headed south with the skiffs aboard. We have 7-days
to fish out of the small boats, these are fun trips and we
are all eager to get down the beach for some bass fishing.
Kevin Mattson is here as the representative of M.C.
Swimbaits. We would like to thank Cory for sending all
aboard a bag of his big weedless swimbaits. We have used
this bait in the past on the skiffs and they are the only
bait we will need for this trip. The bass just love theses
baits. After a brief seminar, we had a flurry of activity on
deck with our anglers rigging up their gear. A few kayak
guys are here including Scott Mckay, Bob Falkenberg, Tim
Boyer, Dave Klein all returning again. Also a few of our
past skiff guys are here, Keith Byrne, Al Scow, Bill Vogel,
and Louie Zimm are a few of them. James Hassen is on his
first skiff trip, James is celebrating his birthday today
and we are glad to have him aboard. He is a big tuna guy and
should have a blast in the skiff, it will be a new
experience for him. We will fish tomorrow and report more
then, the Q crew's out.

Day
6- Mochizuki Charter
As we rolled into the island in the early hours of the
morning we had no wind. We knew exactly where we wanted to
be and we were right. As soon as it cracked gray and you
could barely see, the Yellowtail decided it was time to
feed. Somewhere around eight in the morning, we had reached
our quota of Yellowtail and we knew it was time to get
headed offshore. We spent the rest of our day in search of
some more Tuna. Unfortunately, we kind of came up a little
on the short side. Looking in pristine blue water with a
more than ideal temperature, we found some kelp that lacked
the Tuna we are in search of. As for tomorrow, we will be
offshore in search of some of those pesky Tuna. Until then,
wish us luck!!!
Day
5- Mochizuki Charter
We started our morning in the lee of a big and beautiful
island with flat water. As for the fishing it was a little
on the slower side of things to start things off. So it was
time to set off in search mode and after turning over more
than fair share of stones, we found exactly what we were
looking for. As we made our first circle, we knew it was
going to happen. As soon as the anchor came tight and I
looked back, all I could was every long rod on the boat
doubled over. We spent the rest of the day catching
beautiful grade Yellowtail. Kind of sounds like a repeat of
yesterday and it was. It was straight surface iron fishing
and as good as it gets. Now its time to start heading in a
northerly direction where we plan on anchoring up in the
early hours of the morning.
Day
4- Mochizuki Charter
Soooo…last night we rolled into last trips Grouper hot spot.
As luck would have, lighting did not strike twice…oh well.
We spent a beautiful night on the anchor and awoke to
beautiful weather, and once again, it was hot. After looking
around the shallows for some sign of Yellow-tail we decided
to get back out to the yesterdays area where we had porpoise
with tuna and kelps with Dorado. We found kelps loaded with
Dorado that we already have a plentiful amount of on the
boat. We did our best to bypass those in search of some tuna
fish. With little success in the tuna department and an
increase in wind and sea state, we opted to return to the
shallows in search of Yellowtail. Upon arrival, we found
exactly what we were looking. Once we came tight on the
anchor, it was game on. All the guys fishing the surface
iron were instantly bit on good grade Yellowtail and those
fishing the heavy jig had one on as well. Come to think of
it, I don’t believe that anybody really fished bait
throughout our Yellowtail frenzy. With weather being less
than desirable we are headed North in hopes of catching some
fish on the protected side of a big island.
Day 3- Mochizuki Charter
When we woke up this morning, we knew it was going to be a
scorcher today. It was rather warm before the sun even came
up. Once the sun came up it got hot, and so did our water
that reached the 78-degree plus mark at times. Sometime
around mid-morning our action began to heat up as well. To
start things off we found a nice school of porpoise that had
an eager school of yellow-fin that wanted to show themselves
and play for a bit. At times, everybody had one on. In
addition, from there things got better. We found a nice
piece of floating kelp that had premium size Dorado all over
it. Kenny got one that just might reach the fifty-pound
mark. Our day continued with steady action on tuna and kelps
with Dorado. In all today was a very nice day and we are
enjoying a beautiful night here on the anchor.
Day 2- Mochizuki Charter
Today started out bright and early, as we got down to
business looking for some of that mixed yellow-fin and
blue-fin that has treated us kindly for the past month. As
we made our way south in beautiful weather, we were quite
pleased to break up the ride down with some nice tuna,
yellowtail, and even a few Dorado. Once happy hour hit, it
was all smiles as the sun set and we prepared ourselves for
dinner and the anticipation of what tomorrow might bring.
Day 1- Mochizuki Charter
Today we departed on our annual Mochizuki seven-day charter.
After refreshing our bait supply at the bait receivers, we
set a course for points south. With the prospect of good
fishing on the horizon, we bid farewell to San Diego, and
look forward to what may become.

Gary Schall/Fire Fighter 7 day (day 3)
Lets just say we got the anchor down in the dark and the
action began shortly there after. It was game on beautiful
25 to a few standouts that went over 40 pounds. The yellows
were there and eager to welcome our baits. After thinks
lightened and the sun began to raise the action continued
with bite going from predominantly a dropper loop bite, to
more of a yo-yo, and fly line bite. After putting together a
wonderful morning we decided to blast offshore in hopes of
finding kelp or some more tuna fish. We ended up picking
away at a few tuna on various blind jig strikes, dolphins,
and the occasional meter mark, before the day was over. We
we’re slightly disappointed that our big kelp load full of
biting fish didn’t present itself for us, but we cant
complain about our day in the least bit. We are still
sliding south and will be on the ridge tomorrow.
Gary Schall/Fire Fighter 7 day (day 2)
Our day started out with us in the hot zone at just about
the perfect time of the morning. Although it took us a
little bit of time to get the ball rolling in our favor, the
overall outcome was in our favor. Everybody aboard the boat
today definitely got to do some yanking and cranking on some
nice quality blue-fin, yellow-fin, and the occasional
dorado. We feel very fortunate for putting together such a
nice day on what was not the calmest ocean without a breath
of wind. Needless to say, it was kind of sloppy. In the
early evening, we started sliding south with hopes of
getting the anchor down early for tomorrow morning’s
yellowtail fishing.

Accurate 7
day, day 6, Thursday 9-01-11
We headed north today and the weather was not so great. It
was cold green water and a bit of wind. Instead of fishing
off shore for tuna we made the move into the beach and tried
to hide from the wind. It was nice in the lee of the island
we fished. A few drifts for a halibut or two and then we
found some yellowtail. It was a nice afternoon; we had good
weather and finished of our fishing for the trip. When we
headed north the weather took a turn quick. It was wet and
windy while the guys broke down their gear and we headed for
home. We will be in at 6 am Saturday morning and then
turning around and heading back out with a group of fire
fighters from the Long Beach area led by Gary Shall. We
would like to thank Jack Nilsen From Accurate for the
goodies that everyone received, the reels that he gave away
and the good times. Also the Salas Jigs, Mustad Hooks, Aftco
fighting belts and other misc. items that Jack gave out. If
you ever want to try an Accurate reel, Jacks trips the one
you should try to book, he brings reels and rods for all to
use and they are the best of the best. More tomorrow, the Q
crew's out!!!
Accurate 7 day, day 4, Tuesday 8-30-11
What another outstanding day fishing for us today. We awoke
to warm calm conditions and fish around the boat. Before the
sun came up it was wide-open yellowtail fishing. We had a
prize of a dozen Salas jigs for our big fish of the day,
winner, John Brown with a big fat yellowtail of about 30
lbs. Everyone put fish on the boat with most at or near a
limit of yellows. Hot stick today was John D'ornellas, he
was pulling on fish all morning and had a limit and helped a
few others tag a fish or two. (Mike, your rod that Gene
borrowed is now a two-piece!!) We are headed west to try our
luck at some bigger tuna at the rocks. We will report later,
the Q crew's out!!
Accurate 7 day. day 3, Monday 8-29-11
It was a busy morning here, we started to look for kelps and
it was our first try that produced. There were Dorado thick
on this kelp and we put the wood to them. They were mostly
12 to 15 lbs and a few were 20 plus. Jack from Accurate had
a prize for the biggest dodo landed today. The winner was
Gene Mckenna with a 27 lb bull. It was a nice fish and we
were happy to see him win the prize of an Aftco fighting
belt. (Mike, you should have made the trip, you big dummy!!)
Anyway, tomorrow it will be yellowtail as our target
species. We have had good fishing down here the last few
trips and hope for a repeat. Our weather is great and the
entire group is getting along great and having a blast.
Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Accurate 7 day, day 2, Sunday 8-28-11
It was a very good day of fishing for us today. We were in
the position for blue-fins before daylight. When it was
light, we started trolling and it did not take long to find
some fish. It was a mix of blue-fin and yellow-fin. First,
we would see all of one kind of fish then as some time went
on in our drifts the other kind of fish would show up. Then
it would be a mix. Our anglers ALL had good fishing with
some of them stopping to just watch and take in the madness
during the wide-open bites we had today. Jessen Lopes and
hid dad Joe are on the boat and Jess celebrated his 18th b-
day with yesterday. He is having a blast and today landed a
nice Dorado and a nice mix of tuna. Jerry Stanley, Skip
Kenison, Tony and Gary Lourenco, Larry Kelly, Patrick
Hinrichsen, David Chadbourne, Gene Mckenna, Richard Moses,
David and Alan Springer and Jack "sparky" Nilsen are a few
of our past anglers back again. We are going to be kelping
our way south tomorrow and will report more later. The Q
crew's out!!!!!
Accurate 7 day, day 1, Sat. 8-27-11
This morning at 6 am we pulled into our slip and unloaded
our catch. The piles of fish up on the dock were impressive.
Some of the guys had close to a limit and a few did. We then
loaded the Accurate charter with Jack leading the way and
split. Our plans are to fish tomorrow off shore and will try
for some tuna. We have good weather and our bait is ok at
best. We will report more later. The Q crew's out!!!

Phenix Custom Quality Rods - Outdoor Pro Shop, 7 day, day 6,
Thursday 8-25-11
We spent most of the day headed north. We spent a few hours
looking for kelps but there was no fish. Then we pulled into
one of the islands down by the beach and made some drifts
for halibut. Only one was tagged and other bass were
released. We came across to some yellows after fishing the
bass. We were just about to leave this spot, we saw a school
of fish, and we were able to land some. We will be off shore
tomorrow looking to tag some tuna's. Till then, the Q crew's
out!!!
Phenix Custom Quality Rods - Outdoor Pro Shop 7 day, day 4,
Tuesday 8-23-11
We started out our day on anchor for some yellowtail. A
short time after breakfast we pulled the anchor and looked
for fish. We made some drifts on the shallows for yellowtail
and tried for tuna but nothing exciting happened. We then
went back to the shallows waters for the night. A good bite
happened right after dinner and we were busy for a while.
Overall, it was a good day with action a good part of the
day. We will be here in the morning and report more
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Phenix Custom
Quality Rods - Outdoor Pro Shop 7 day, day 3, Monday 8-22-11
We had great fishing today. As we trolled to the south it
looked grim with no strikes. We arrived at the high spot we
were looking for (not to be named) and the fishing was off
the hook. The yellowtails were thick. We ended up with a
very nice day. During the 4 hours we fished, there were at
least 5 to 6 fish going with everyone getting a bite on
every bait. A few bonus yellow-fin, blue-fin and dodo's were
landed as well. We have good weather, hot is what it was
today and tomorrow should bring the same. We are going to
stay in the same area and look and hope for some tuna
tomorrow. Till then, the Q crew's out!!!
Phenix Custom
Quality Rods - Outdoor Pro Shop 7 day, day 2, Sunday 8-21-11
We spent the morning headed south with good weather and
everyone all ready to fish. We spent the afternoon at a
yellowtail spot and landed a few. It was not all that great
and we spent only about 2 hours trying. We are going to be
headed to the area we fished the last trip with great
fishing, we hope for a repeat. On the way down we will look
for kelps early and hope for some fish on our way south.
Everyone is having a good time and our weather and food from
chef Brett is great. We will let you know more later, the Q

Phenix Rods - Outdoor Pro
Shop, 7 day, day 1, Sat. 8-20-11
We pulled into Point Loma Sportfishing early this morning
and unloaded the gang from Melton's Tackle - B.H. Cops. We
had a very nice load of fish that had a mix of tuna and
yellowtail. Most of the anglers had a limit of yellows and
some had a limit of tuna. We then loaded up the guys from
Phenix Custom Quality Rods of Cerritos, Ca and also a group
from, Outdoor Pro Shop with shops in Cotati and Oakland. We
cleared the point around 1 and headed south. Phenix Rods is
represented by Jeff Tseng and Outdoor Pro Shop has Alex
Christianson on board. At dinner, the guys did a giveaway
and a raffle with a couple guys winning rods from Phenix.
Alex had stuff for all and also did a raffle. The rod winners
were Bob Buddell and Ying Lee. Alex would like to thank,
Outdoor Pro Shop, Gamakatsu Hooks, VMC Hooks, High Tide
Sport fishing and Berkley for the 30 and 40 lb line for all
to use. Thanks to Paul Geurts. In addition, Alex would like
to say hi to his fiancé, Alexia. We will report tomorrow
after a little fishing down the beach. The Q crew's out!!!

Day 7 Melton Tackle,
B.H.Cops, 8-19-11
What a way to finish off a trip. We got up bright and early
and were ready for battle first thing. The morning started
with a little sonar school that came up, boiled around and
ate the jigs. From there on out it was game on. There sure
was not much time in between stops, as we continued to put
together a beautiful morning. For our morning we had limits
style fishing. At times it was complete pandemonium, with
everybody bit. At lunch we called it a trip, we actually
called it a very successful trip. As I write this report we
are headed north with a minimal amount of and some semi
choppy sea, which we hardly notice on this wonderful riding
platform. As for tonight we are looking forward to wonderful
thanksgiving style dinner and some much deserved rest.. And
as for tomorrow we should be in to the dock around 6:00.
Melton Tackle - B.H.
Cops 7 day, day 6, Thursday 8-18-11
We are headed north today. Looking for kelps and trolling.
As far as kelps, we found a few but they were not holding
any fish to speak of. We landed a few tuna on blind jig
strikes today but that was about it. We are headed to an
area that has seen tuna the last couple days. The entire
long-range fleets, except a couple, are going to be in the
area and we will have some good coverage. We could use some
tuna as we are loaded with yellowtail but not all of our
anglers have tuna, maybe soon coming, wish us luck. Till
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Melton's
Tackle, B.H.Cop's 7-day, day 6, Tuesday 8-18-11
We arrived at the
Ridge at about 7:00, just after finishing breakfast. We
started looking around right away and within 15 minutes we
were in the middle of an epic bite that would last until we
collectively yelled "Uncle!" The fish were very nice grade
yellowtail, 15-25 pounds with a couple of Dorado mixed in
for spice. The Yellows bit literally everything we threw at
them, including a weedless rootbeer color Scampi. Just when
we thought we'd seen it all, a huge whale shark pulled up on
the port side. It was feeding on the profusion of red crabs
coloring the water. Lots of life here on the Ridge whales
breeching in the distance, dolphin, a couple of turtles and
birds.
It was around 10:00 pm when we left (the yellowtails were
still biting). A half hour later, we found ourselves in the
middle of an endless pod of dolphin. It's no secret that
yellow-in tuna often are associated with such pods of
dolphin and our good luck continued with jig strikes all
across the stern. That stop and several others provided us
with a good number of very good quality yellow-fins.
We left the trolling rigs out but we knew the catching was
pretty much over. After an excellent dinner of steak, green
beans and potatoes, Eric pushed off in earnest for the
rocks. We expect to anchor there early tomorrow morning.
Make room in the freezer Honey, it's been a good trip and
we've got another day to fish. We'll let you know how it
goes.
Melton's
Tackle, B.H.Cop's 7 day, day 5, Tuesday 8-17-11
Monday started well with pancakes, sausages, and beautiful
weather. Unfortunately, as we headed south, so did the
fishing. We were trolling and paddy hopping in nasty green
water for most of the day for not much but huge schools of
little bitty yellowtail and that wasn't what we were looking
for. We worked hard but by late afternoon, all we had in the
cooler was two nice yellows. Finally we found the magic kelp
and the conditions went from boredom to mayhem in an
instant. Within ten seconds, everyone was hooked up on 15-20
lb. yellowtail. This was the first big bite of the trip and
a few fish were lost in the scramble but as soon as a fresh
bait hit the water, it was swallowed and the fight was on
again. The bite lasted about 20 minutes and shut off as
quickly as it began. A highlight was the marlin hooked by
Grey Eugster. It put on quite a show, leaping as only a
marlin can, until it decided to spit the hook and say
goodbye. Everyone had at least one nice fish and a couple
had three. Nice for one quick stop. We continued trolling
'till dinner but didn't add to the count.
After dinner, (pork loin, peas and potatoes with bread
pudding and blueberries for desert) chartermaster Brandon
Giovannetti of Melton Tackle handed out very cool custom
Melton/Qualifier 105 tee shirts and shiny Tady surface irons
for all of us. Brandon's a good guy and has done some very
generous under-the-radar deeds. I think we all will think of
Melton Tackle in the future.
Finally, talk turned to tomorrow. Captain Eric gave us the
report from Alijos Rocks and it wasn't encouraging. Three
boats fishing there with just a handful of tuna for their
efforts. A vote was taken and it was decided that we would
head to the Ridge for yellowtail and if we do well enough
there, maybe go to the Rocks to try for tuna with the time
we have left. We'll let you know how it goes.
Melton's
Tackle, B.H.Cop's 7 day, day 4, Tuesday 8-16-11
It was as good as it gets today. We started out with a drift
for some yellows and kicked the anchor over. After that it
was full speed every bait that hit the water type fishing.
Most of the guys had a limit or very close to it on
yellowtail. We had to drive away from them and looked for
some tuna. No luck, more yellows are all we found and they
everywhere today. We eventually started the trek to the
rocks and will be there in the morning. We are hoping for
some of the tuna like we found last week on our last trip.
Wish us luck, the Q crew's out!!!
Melton's Tackle
- B.H.Cops 7 day, day 3, Monday 8-15-11
We fished off shore today, looking for kelps all day. In the
morning, we were in some off colored water and we did not
catch any fish. The afternoon was a good one with blue warm
water and lots of kelps. Not all the kelps were holding fish
and we looked hard to find a bunch and scratched a good day.
Most fish were yellowtail in the 20 lb range; a few bigger
models to 35 were also landed. We are going to stay put
tonight for the most part, and try for some numbers
tomorrow, more then the Q crew's out!!!
Melton's
Tackle, Beverly Hills Cops 7 day, day 2, Sunday 8-14-11
Keeper Dave here, not quite the writer that Tim is, but
I'll do my best. Today we explored offshore in an area
that's produced Blue fin for us. We trolled up a couple of
jig strikes for a few nice
Yellowfin and then went on to find kelp paddies to mine. We
had some pretty good fishing for Yellowtail and a nice
Dorado, not big numbers but we're optimistic for tomorrow's
trip south. Dinner was Tri Tip prepared to perfection by
Brett and Rusty. Lots of great guys (and a gal) on this trip
and I'm having a great time getting to know them.
The plan for tomorrow is to patrol a little closer to shore
looking for paddies to fish on the way to the Rocks. Weather
is perfect and it's a great time here on the Q.
Today we had a give away from Melton's Tackle and there was
some great stuff won. Brandon and Cris from Melton's had
some shades from Costa, a
few reels from, a Baja Special from Penn, and a Talica and a
Trinidad from Shimano. Shimano also gave waxwings to all
with some hats also.
Everyone got a bag with swag in it. Gamakatsu ringed hooks;
a few hats, waxwings, stickers and some other misc. items
were in the bags. Thanks to the entire sponsor's and to
Melton's for the goodies and they still have more. We are
going kelping tomorrow and will let you know how we do. The
Q crew's out!!
Melton's Tackle, B.H.C., day
1, Sat. 8-13-11
We departed today a couple hours late after some repairs we
needed. Alls good and we are off. The group is Melton's
Tackle, and the Beverly Hills Cops. Brandon Giovannetti and
Cris Hawkins are here as charter master's for Melton's and
have a FEW large boxes of swag to giveaway. (More on that
tomorrow.) A few guys from the Beverly Hills Police
Department are here also as this is a co-charter. A few
regulars are back; Dave Smith, Kevin and Larry Hardesty,
Austin Emmerling, Rudi Foorman and good old Phil Lisi are
all on board. We are going thru the blue fin area tomorrow
and will give it a couple hours before we head south. More
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!

Barnett 7 day,
Wednesday 8-10-11
It was another outstanding day for us today. We had fish
hooked before the sun came up and we stayed busy all day.
For the day, we had tuna's over 100 lbs and some more wahoo.
The wahoos are huge, with most over 40 lbs and a handful of
them over 50 lbs!! It was a fun day with good weather and
only a couple times today we were not hooked up to some sort
of fish. The kite worked again and we made it through the
rotation, everyone has had a turn on the kite. We will head
north tonight and report again tomorrow. Until then, the Q
crew's out!!
Barnett 7 day, day 4,
Tuesday 8-09-11
Another good day here on the Qualifier 105! When we awoke,
we were almost to our fishing hole after running all night.
The rocks off in the distance had the gang all pulling out
the cameras. Even if you have fished the rocks before it
always an awesome sight to see, 3 rocks out in the middle of
nowhere. With anticipation running high, we trolled around
for a while and looked the area over good. Captain Joe
decided to drop anchor on one of the high spots and it was a
good one. We had fish crashing around the boat within
minutes and with our kite up and line in the water we
started to hook fish. Some of the first action saw a few
getting bit off, wahoo's in the area. A few put on wire
leaders and that was the right chose. Hands full of wahoo
were landed and they were ALL big ones. Their were some
typical wahoo incidents, the fish hits and runs and there it
goes up to the anchor, or under the boat, or out and right
in to the line that connects another angler to a wahoo and
that never ends good. A few better tuna were landed, fish up
to around 125 lbs. Just about everyone had at least 1 tuna
and some had 2 or 3. Dan Alcarez had a couple big fish, as
did Blair Dupree. T.J. Ponded had a nice kite fish that will
out weigh him for sure. The action was good and we will
remain here for more tomorrow, till then the Q crew's out
Barnett 7 day, day 3,
Monday 8-08-11
We had a great day fishing today; we landed yellow fin tuna,
yellowtail, and Dorado just as we had planned. Big fish of
the day went to Boyd Goldwin, a nice fat yellow around 35
lbs. T.J. ponder hooked and landed a 23 lb yellow on his
bass rod, an M.C. Swimbait tied to the line. That was a good
battle since he is only about 4 feet tall, good job kid!! In
addition, on this trip is Nancy Halpern, Nancy was our
office manager back a few years ago and is now out fishing
with us. We are all having a good time and the weather is
fantastic. The food, prepared by Chef Brett has also been
great. A few fish of all species is what today saw for most
of our anglers, we also released a good number of smaller
fish to be hooked another day. Our plan is to now head west
to Alijos rocks for some of the bigger tuna that frequent
that area. We had a nice dinner of ribs and will be there at
around 7 Tuesday morning, more then, the Q crew's out!!!
Barnett 7 day, day 2,
Sunday, 8-07-11
This morning we had good weather and spirits were high. A
seminar on the fish and we were ready. Lines were spooled
on, knots were tested and drags were set. We arrived at our
destination around 2:30 and dropped the anchor. A couple
minutes later, it was game on, we hooked some yellowtail and
it was a steady pick for a couple hours. The current swung
around and they stopped biting. That was after we tagged a
nice pile of yellows. (And yes, Dick did catch a couple on
the Harnell!!) Overall, it was a nice day with good weather,
food, and fishing. We will move a little further down the
coast tomorrow and will be looking for a tuna, yellow,
Dorado mix. We will report more tomorrow, the Q crew's
out!!!
Barnett 7 day, day1, Sat.
8-06-11
We loaded up our group and departed around 11 this morning.
The Barnett group is on the boat and back for more, Dick and
Chuck Barnett are here as well as a lot of the regulars on
this trip. Joe Lesuer, Dan Alcaraz, Wade Braker, Wayne West,
Mike Wallace, Rudy Vantine, Gary Gillett, Boyd Ford and John
Mcdougal are on the boat. A few guys that fish with us but
are on this trip for the first time are Don Culbertson and

Coastside Fishing Club 7 day, day 6, Thursday, 7-28-11
We awoke to
beautiful weather and better conditions as far as the
current today. The fish were around the boat right away and
after first light, we hooked a few. The kite was working and
we were steady this morning with 2 or 3 fish going most the
time. Problem was we had to leave to get home on Saturday
morning. Some of the guys that landed fish were Robert
Ayres, Kevin Blount, Ryan Gabaldon, John Meng and Phil Lisi
all landed nice tuna's. Tom and Ben Hibner were hot, Tom
hooked 3 and Ben hooked a couple. Dale Myer, Daniel Perez
and Dale Myer also hooked nice fish. Tom won the prize for
the day, a WFO tackle bag, first tuna over 50 lbs won and he
beat that no problem! We are on our way home, and will be on
the move all day Friday. We will report more lately, the Q
crew's out.
Coastside Fishing Club, day 5, Wednesday, 7-27-11
It was a tough day of fishing today. We had hopes for tuna
and we found them but they would not bite. There was fish
boiling around the area all day but they were reluctant to
bite the hooked baits. We did hook some nice yellowtail up
to 35 lbs and the weather, company, and food were all
outstanding. We will remain in this same spot tonight and
hope for better current tomorrow because today was not very
good.
Coastside Fishing Club 7 day, day 3, Monday 7-25-11
We were in position to fish some high spots today and it
worked out perfect. First try we found some willing
yellowtail that were biting. With some flurries on the first
anchor job, we all had a great time. The guys on their first
trip found out just how hard a yellowtail can pull. They all
had a blast and a couple of our highlights today were
Marshall Harritt from Grand Prairie Texas hooking and then
fighting and landing a yellow that was 35 lbs. Phil Lisi
tagged a big fat 45 lber and to end the day Jim Blount
landed a 40 lb white sea bass!! We are going to drift
tonight and hope for some tuna fish tomorrow. Ashford and
Jon Wood are on their first trip and having a blast, as are
Marshall, Mitchell and Byron Harritt. On his second trip is
Ben Hibner, our hot stick for the day. He was up the side of
the boat with his pole bent over every time you looked up
the side. He had a nice catch tagged today, as did Fernando
and Daniel Perez, Tim and Robert Ayres, William Barnes, Gene
Blazick, Len Damerow. Dale Meyer was tagging fish left and
right also. We will report more tomorrow, the Q crew's
out!!!
Coastside Fishing Club 7 day, day 2, Sunday, 7-24-11
We spent most of today helping all the guys getting ready to
fish. A few boat chores and a very nice day as far weather.
We had a tackle seminar around 9 am and by noon we were
ready for the most part. We are headed south and did not
fish today. We will be at our honey hole around 9 am Monday.
We will try for yellow fin tuna and some Yellowtail also. A
little action will be a nice reward for a 2 day boat ride.
Hurricane Dora has died down and we hope to fall in right
behind what ever weather it is still producing. The forecast
for Tuesday is good. We will report again tomorrow, the Q
crew's out!!
Coastside Fishing
Club, 7 day, Sat, 7-23-11
We departed today for a 7-day
trip with one of our favorite groups, Coastside Fishing
Club. We loaded up and departed from the dock around 10:30
am. So, with a nice load of big sardines we head south. We
have a bunch of return guys and a few firs timers. Our
charter master is Dale (dropper-loop) Myer; he passed out
goodie bags to everyone today and will be doing some other
giveaways during the trip. Tom Hibner is back with his son
Ben. Gene Blazick and Len Damerow along with Fernando and
Daniel Perez, and our good buddy Phil Lisi are also back. We
have our eye on what is left of hurricane Dora, hopes of a
trip down to the ridge and or the stones are our hopes for
this trip. The weather will help make our decision a little
easier tomorrow. Today we all just kicked back and swapped
some stories from past trips with the new guys. A couple
guys played dominoes and a few watched the waves out in the
sun with a cold beer. We will have more for you tomorrow, so
till then the Q crew's out!!!

Day 8, Saturday
7-08-11, The Nevada Gang 8 Day
We fished up the
beach today with overcast sky and a little wind. Nothing to
write home about but overall this trip was as good as it
gets. Fishing every day on this trip with good weather was
excellent. Having both great passengers and a good load of
fish to go home with is just a dream vacation for us
fishermen. We will be in for a few day before our next trip.
If you have the time come down to sunny Baja this summer and
fish with us it will be fun we guarantee it. Call the office
and get singed up soon. Most trips have a spot or two open.
We will be in Sunday at around 6 am, see ya, the Q crew's

Day 7, Friday
7-07-11, Nevada Gang 8 Day
It was another great
day here on the big Q 105. We fished the lee of Cedros for a
bunch of bass and a few nice halibuts. On the big boat, we
drifted for halibuts and landed some nice fish. Big fish of
the day was Dave Snyder of Las Vegas. He had one that went
33 lbs. Wayne "Coop" Cooper had a couple of keepers and
another hand full was landed. In the skiffs, we headed for
the north head until the wind came up. After we went south,
a ways in the skiffs we found the bass. When we switched out
the gang in the skiffs, it was time for a halibut drift or
two. With Tim in the skiff was Coop, Mike Lepore, and
charter master Rod " nice guy" Conner. Up on the beach in
about 10 feet of water we immediately saw a halibut swim
under the boat. Mike hooked it and we landed that one,
around 18 lbs. A blind cast up to the rocks and Tim hooked
and landed a fish around the same size. Next was Coop with
another one. A few drifts later, we saw a bigger model and
mike hooked it. This fish swam off like a big yellow! A few
minutes later, it was in the skiff, a 25 lber. It was a fun
morning to say the least. The afternoon run was all bass and
it was very good bassin. A couple more halibut on the big
boat and 3 black sea bass (all released) and then bass after
bass landed. It was a good time in the sun of Cedros. Only
complaint was that it was hot today. Tomorrow will be a
short stop at San Martin Island and then a run home for
Sunday's arrival in San Diego. Till next time the Q crew's
out!!
Day 5, Wednesday
7-06-11, Nevada Gang 8 day
More good fishing today! We fished on the main land of Baja.
A new area for most and it was very good. The bass fishing
was as good as it gets. Some times, we would catch a fish on
every cast for long stretches at a time. First, run of the
day we absolutely kicked bass butt. We had 4 fish on at a
time a lot of the time and we had a blast. The big boat went
for some more yellows and that was good. The big fish of the
day went to Wayne "Coop" Cooper with a bass pushing 10 lbs,
a trophy for sure. At the end of the day, we dropped anchor
near the kelp and we all landed fish for about an hour. It
was also wide open as we all landed 20 to 40 bass from the
big boat. It was a great way to finish a fantastic day.
Staying in this area until tomorrow. Wish us luck. The Q
crew's out!!
Day 4, Tuesday
7-05-11, Nevada Gang 8 day
Today started off with the skiffs in the water and ready to
go at 6 am. The first run produced good bass fishing. We
went to the kelp and with good weather. It was game on. Bass
up to 9 lbs were landed, Steve Weight had one around 9 and
Kenny Shoning had a jumbo grumpy plaid bass. Then big
boat went for some yellows and scratched away all morning.
In the later part of the day, the wind came up and we ducked
in behind the island in the skiffs. Over all it was a day
full of action and we all had fun. We are staying put
tonight and hoping for a repeat tomorrow. A short move in
the morning will set us up to fish a different spot here at
the island, till then the Q crew's out!
Day 3, Monday
7-04-11, The Nevada Gang 8 day
Today we fished at Cedros for Yellowtail and did very well.
We arrived around lunch and started to hook fish on our
first drift. The fish are all around 20 lbs and we tagged a
bunch. Tomorrow we will be fishing in the skiffs and looking
for some calico bass to fish. We have good weather and hope
it continues. We were busy today and it was nice. Connie
Stafford was on fire fighting fish the whole time we were
fishing. Christian Conner also was doing well landing his
share of fish and having a blast doing it. His parents Rod
and Sandy also did well. Ken Shoning (JR & SR) also had a
few fish to tag. We will report tomorrow and send some
pictures, our camera had a little flaw today but we fixed
it.
Day 2, Sunday
7-03-11, The Nevada Gang 8 day
Today we fished off shore for some tuna. We went west to
look around in an area that has not seen any traffic yet
this year. We searched hard all day for nada. We saw one
spot of some bigger blue fin but as blue fin do they dropped
off the face of the earth when we came within 200 yards of
them. For the rest of the day we saw nothing. The gang had a
good day just hanging out and having a few beers in the sun.
For Monday, we are headed to the islands for some yellows
and bass from the skiffs. This trip last year we fished out
of the skiffs the whole trip, this year they wanted to fish
both off shore and at the islands for some bass in the
skiffs. The group is a good one, they are all mellow and
having a great time. We will arrive at the island around
noon and will put the skiffs in the water if we have the
right conditions, if not we will fish the big boat today and
drop the skiffs first thing tomorrow. We have a new camera
and have finally figured out how to put some pictures on
with the reports. More tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Day 1, Saturday
7-02-11, Nevada Gang 8 day
We pulled into the dock at 6 am and dropped the Boss,
Cowboy, Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle group off, and loaded
the Nevada Gang. This trip is a skiff - offshore combo. We
fished with this group last year and are happy to have them
back. We loaded the skiffs for some bass fishing along the
coast but first we are in search of some tuna fish. We are
headed out to the west to look around, hoping to catch a few
of them. Last year we had a great day of blue fin fishing
and are hoping for a repeat. They have plenty of cold beers
and are a great bunch, wish us luck and check back tomorrow
for a report on our adventure, till then the Q crew's out!!!

Day 6, 6-30-11, Boss, Cowboy, Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle
We made a good move last night. With the forecast of wind
and what we saw yesterday, we headed to Cedros. The morning
was nice, sunny and a light breeze. We started looking hard
at first light and it took a while to find a nice spot of
fish. Around 8 am we found a good school. It was a great
time, at least 3 or 4 fish going most of the morning. A
couple of flurries mixed in and we were busy today. It was a
long drift, 3 hours picking away. Around lunch, we headed
closer to the island to try for some trophies that swim
around this area. With no luck on the big fish we headed up
the island for a halibut / calico drift or two. The first
couple drifts resulted in some small halibut we released. We
moved around and found some good bass fishing for those who
chose to try for them instead of halibut. Ty and T.J Ponder
had a blast catching and releasing bass at every stop we
made. A couple guys stuck keeper halibuts, and Jay Archer
was the hot stick with a couple nice flatfish. T.J. landed
and released a black sea bass around 30 lbs. Over all it was
a great day, tagging yellows in the morning and drifting in
the sun and catching steady bass and a few halibut all
afternoon. We will be headed up the line tonight and if
weather permits, we will be making some drifts for reds in
the morning. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Day 5 , 6-29-11, Boss, Cowboy, Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle
This morning started with a bang. We had a spot of blue fin
located first light and put tags on a handful. Then another
spot came right at us and we landed a few more. After that,
it was a tough day. We saw a couple spots that came up but
as blue fin do they would disappear as we came close to
them. We saw only spot or two for the rest of the day. It
was not what we had hoped for at all. The group made the
call to go back and finish up with some more yellows and a
drift or two for halibut. We will let you know how that
goes. The Q crew's out!!!
Day 4, 6-28-11, Boss, Cowboy, and Pacific Coast Bait and
Tackle
Today we fished for some more yellow and it worked out
great. It was a steady pick on fish, in the 18 to 25 lb
range. We all had a blast. Terry Beam is on her first trip
and is doing very well. She is a friend of Boss's and will
be coming back for more we are sure. Boss's daughter Suzanne
is also here and doing well. Most of the gang has fished
with us before, Dean and Jay Archer, Hoss, Dennis Murphy, Ty
and T.J. Ponder, Bert and Tom Vervoorn, Ross Yasukochi, Mike
Young, and of course Boss and Cowboy. We ended up with a
great day and we are headed out off shore tomorrow for some
tuna. Till then, the Q crew's out!!
Day 3, 6-27-11, Boss, Cowboy, and Pacific Coast Bait and
Tackle
We had a great day on the yellows. Everyone had a handful or
more fish they tagged and it was nice weather. Foods great
and the group are also great. Hugh Cobb Owner of Pacific
Coast Bait and Tackle's here and is co charter master with
Boss and Cowboy. He is here with Fred Thomas; both are
members of the Oceanside Senor Anglers Club. Boss is here
with the gang, Hoss, Murphy and his daughter Suzanne. Ross
Yasukochi is here and whacked ‘em yesterday. Mike Young is
here and Tom and Bert Vervoon are back. We will try for a
repeat and let you know tomorrow.
Day 2, 6-26-11, Boss - Cowboy 7 day
First thing this morning everyone was up early and ready to
troll. After about an hour we became excited, a spot of some
bigger blue fin tune popped up. As blue fin are known to do
they were gone as we approached before we could set up to
fish them. As we headed south, today a couple spots were
seen but we did not hook any. Today was a travel day to
points south but we were looking for life all day. A late
afternoon stop on kelp saw a handful of nice yellows, a
little practice for tomorrow. We are headed to the
yellowtail island down Baja with high hope and a great
group. On the other hand, fishing will start yearly Monday
morning and we could use a fun filled by pulling on some
yellows. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Departure day, Sat, 6-25-11, Boss,
Cowboy 7 day
After a few days at the dock, we are off again. We loaded
the gang before 10 am and headed south. We have a nice load
of bait and a great group. Dave "Boss" Hoag and Gary "
cowboy" Vander Lyke are on the boat as charter masters and
we are glad to see them. With a group of passengers that
have mostly all fished with us before we hoping for a
boatload of fish, wish us luck. We will update you again
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!

Friday, 6-10-11, Fish Trap skiff trip
We found some rock cod that
wanted to bite this morning and finished off the trip
drifting some reds. We will be in early Saturday morning,
unload the skiffs, and get ready for our next adventure. We
need the weather to come down; it has been blowing the last
2 weeks. Pray for alibi’s and blue fin for the summer, the fleet needs
it. We have some spots on our next trips and we would love
to have a boatload of anglers. Call the office if you can
make it and pack your gear for the summer trips. The last
few years have seen good fishing for our 7-day trips and we
have room. Talk to you soon.
Thursday, 6-09-11, Fish Trap Skiff trip
A repeat of yesterday was
what we did today. The yellows bit a little the bass bit
good at times and the weather, well let's just say it was as
s#*@y as the last 2 weeks! In the morning, we had a great
run in the skiffs and bass were wide open for the first run.
The guys on the big boat hooked about a dozen or so, all good
one's. Pictures will follow soon. We left the bass biting to
switch out the skiff guys. When we returned a 1/2 hour later
the bass were done with breakfast and would not bite,
strange how that works, biting at 9 am, lockjaw at 9:30!! At
least the yellows bit a little. We did some looking around
the islands and found a few bass that would bite but not
many. For the afternoon, it was still lockjaw. We had about
6 bass between the 3 skiffs for the afternoon, not well. At
that point, it was time to go, we loaded the skiffs and
headed north. We will rock cod tomorrow and hope for some
freezer fish for the people. Till then, the Q crew's out!!
Wednesday 6-08-11, Fish Trap Skiff trip
Today we fished at Benito's Island; the weather was still
not very good. We had wind and swell and off color water but
the yellows were biting a little. We dropped the skiffs in
the water for bass in and set the big boat up in the gap of
Middle Island and East Island. We started to hook some of the bigger yellows that the area
is always holding. They got on us pretty good and we hooked
some fish on the surface iron. Barry hooked a handful and
handed them off to the other anglers. In the end, we ended
up with about 10 fish all big ones. The skiffs had a fairly
good run with everyone hooking some bass. For the afternoon
runs, we had about the same, good sign of big yellows and
bass for the skiffs. All in all, it was a good day. We were
able to fish all day and the past few days we were lucky to
fish half a day because of the wind and swell. We have some
issues with sending pictures and will send them from the
office when we return. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Day 3, Tues
6-07-11,Fish Trap skiff 7-Day
This morning at first light,
we dropped the skiffs in and headed off for bass in the kelp
at the north end of Cedros. Fishing was very good with most
guys landing at least a dozen or more fish, all big ones.
During the second morning run guess what, the wind started
to blow. The weather this first couple of trips has us on
the ropes. If we had any more wind the skiffs would not
even, be it the water. You could plan on getting a little
wet during the ride to the kelp from the big boat. Some big
bass were landed before we had to get out of there. We
headed down the island for some drifts but fishing was not
very good along the rocky shore. We loaded the skiffs and
headed for Benito's around 4 PM. We will be there tomorrow.
Wish us luck we need it!
Day 2, Monday
6-06-11, Fish Trap skiff 7-Day
We spent this morning at the
south end of Cedros. The wind backed off for the morning and
we were able to fish in the skiffs. Most of our fishing was
up in the kelp; the bass were not in a mood to cooperate. We
fished all morning in nice weather and with current; we had
to really fish our basses off to get a bite. All the fish
are big fat dark colored ones. The big boat did a little
looking around for yellows for nada. We loaded the skiffs up
at lunch and headed for the north end of the island. This
area is one of the best for calico bass. The wind was
blowing less then any day in the past week and a half, into
the kelp we went. We had good fishing until the wind kicked
up. At that point, it was all you could do to drop down
under the kelp before you drifted away from your bait. We
will stay put for tonight and hope for less wind tomorrow.
Till then, the Q crews out!!!
Day 1, Sunday
6-05-11, Fish Trap 7-Day
Our current trip is the Fish
Trap 7 day skiff trip. Barry Brightenburg is on the boat and
has a load of giveaways, raffle prizes and gear for people
to try out this trip. Our first stop to fish was this
morning and the weather has backed off a little. We put the
skiffs in the water just after first light and started to
fish. The bass bit a little and were all nice size fish. The
water is cold, 53 degrees, the wind kicked up and the
current died around 9 am and the fish decided to stop
biting. We switched out the guys and we tried for a while
but they were not biting. At lunch, we put the skiffs on
board and headed south. We will be at Cedros in the morning.
We are hoping for a little less wind and swell so we can
fish a couple other locations we could not fish last trip
due to the weather. We will report more then, the Q crews
out!!!!!
Departure day, Sat
6-04-11, Fish Trap 7-Day
We pulled into San Diego this morning and dropped off the
Big Hammer group. With the wind and swell we had down the
Baja coast, we were lucky to fish in the skiffs at all. The
kayak guys did well as always and after the last few
skiff/kayak trips we have done, with great weather, mother
nature paid us back. With a new group and a fresh load of
bait, we are off for another trip with the skiffs. More
tomorrow, the Q crews out!!

Day 6 (6-02-11) Big
Hammer-8 day skiff trip.
Today we fished the south end of Cedros again. The wind has
blown the entire trip and we have felt trapped. The wind
howled the entire trip, we were very lucky to get the skiffs
in the water as often as we did. It was all out bass fishing
today. Fishing with Oscar today was Doug (the Farrow) Byers.
He has fished the Q for years and this is his first skiff
trip with us. They went into a boiler rock that had water
rushing over it and Doug hooked a monster. With no scale on
the skiff this run it was estimated to be well over 10 lbs
!! A true trophy. The fish were biting good all day and the
wind backed off a little. We had a fish lunch of white sea
bass, a 25 lb fish landed during a halibut drift by Tim. The
afternoon run saw another monster landed, this one by Pete
Wolf, owner of Big Hammer. This fish was also around 10 lbs.
He was in a kayak this run and just hammered the bass on his
swim baits. The kayak gang did well today with Scott Mckay
leading the way.
Bob Falkenberg, Kenny Andorfer, Dave Klein, and Mike Sapp
all doing well. Mike found a little rock today that saw him
landing fish after fish. Over all the trip was a tough one
due to the weather. Over the past number of years we have
got lucky with weather and this trip we paid. Tomorrow we
will be headed home for our Saturday turn around. Till
later, the Q crew's out !!

Day 5 (6-01-11) Big Hammer-8
day skiff trip
It was a much-needed day here on the Q-105. We set up at the
south end of Cedros for our morning skiff-kayak runs. First,
run we headed into the kelp and the bass were biting pretty
well. With a breeze instead of gale force winds we were able
to fish the area all day. First runs we landed bass,
up to 8 lbs and a good amount of them. We released all of
our bass to catch another day. The late morning run we moved
a little to the east of was started and worked a ridge that
comes off the island. The bass were biting well. Tony
Oconnell was fishing bass when a 35 + lb yellow inhaled his
swim bait. With a little help of the spectra cutting thru,
the kelp we landed a nice fish. 1 for 1 so far! The next
drift same thing, Tony on the bottom, yellowtail on. We
followed the fish around for about 15 minutes, fighting the
kelp. He landed the fish on his bass gear, another 35 + lb
fish, 2 for 2. Back to our starting point for a drift over
the kelp for bass. Again, Tony hooks a yellow, 3 drifts 3
fish on. This one was a little harder to land, we had to
drive over the fish and cut the kelp with a tool we use just
for that. A few minutes later, we pulled the fish in the
skiff, 3 for 3. At this point, the big boat had made their
way over to us and drooped the anchor. With a little bit of
bait now in the water the big yellows started to show. We
landed some nice bass as we watched this unfold. Now all 3
skiffs and the big boat are all in the area. Tom Burke
hooked and landed a yellow in Travis's skiff. Allan Faye,
landed one in his skiff. Then guess who, Tony hooks another
one in Tim's skiff. This one we had to chase down, as it was
about to spool his bass reel. We drove at it and landed it.
4 for 4, all over 35 lb's!! The afternoon run was a great
one for the bass, we all had a good number of fish and most
were big fat one's. We will be at the same location for the
morning runs. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!

Day 3 (5-30-11) Big Hammer-8 day skiff trip
Today we found a small area in the lee of Cedros that we
were able to drop the skiffs in. We spent most of the day in
the area and fished out the skiffs and kayaks. As far as
fishing and weather we are hoping for better tomorrow
because today windy and cold with poor fishing. We will be
at Benito's tomorrow for a look there. If the wind would
die, we have high hopes to get the bass. The yellows are few
and far between, maybe they are all over at Benito's, we can
only hope. The bright spot so far is the food. For those
able to eat, Chef Cris is putting out some outstanding food
as always. Wish us luck for tomorrow! We need it!!
Day 2 (5-29-11) Big
Hammer-8 day skiff trip
We spent our first full day here at Cedros hiding from the
wind. We were able to drop the skiffs in for a couple of
runs before it got too bad. The bass were in the mood to
bite despite the wind. Everyone got in a run and the kayak
guys were out for most of the morning. In the afternoon, we
hid out in the lee of the island and made some drifts in the
big boat. John Turner started us off with a big yellow on
the bass gear. Crewman Tim hooked and landed a 25 lb white
sea bass. Other then that a slow WINDY day
We also have a 24 hr stomach bug going around; so far this
trip has been tough. More tomorrow.

Day 1 (5-28-11) Big Hammer-8 day skiff trip
Today we hoped to fish our favorite spot on the coast but
the wind changed our plans. It was blowing at least 20 knots
and at one point in the day a steady 35 to 40!! Not the
conditions we want for skiff and kayak fishing. We will be
at Cedros first light Sunday and if the wind dies down be in
the water early. As far as the guys go, our kayak gang of
Scott Mckay,
Bob Falkenberg,
Kenny Andorfer,
Mike Sapp and
Dave Klein are here again.
These guys are all great fishermen and a pleasure to have
with us. Most of the skiff guys are back for a repeat of the
past. Our buddy Ray Ochoa is here and ALWAYS has a joke to
tell, they are all good ones and somehow he has jokes nobody
has ever heard. Evan Bernard is back for the first time in a
few years. John Turner is here with his fishing partner
Tony Oconnell.
Ernie Osuna,
Rob Creek,
Doug Byers, and
Carl Lindberg are back. A few
new faces are with us also. We will report again tomorrow,
the Q crews out!!!

Departure day
(Friday 5-27-11)Big Hammer-8 day skiff trip.
We
are back! After a long off-season, we departed today for our
annual Big Hammer 8 day skiff trip. We loaded the gang of
eager anglers and cleared the point before noon. Our
off-season includes some minor repairs and a fresh coat of
paint for the big Q105. We have a great bunch of guys on
board and we are all ready to go catch some of those monster
calico's and yellowtail that the skiff trips are about. We
have Pete Wolf from Big Hammer
with us as charter master; he did not make it last year due
to some work he had to attend to at home. We are glad he
made this one. We will report more tomorrow until then the Q
crews out!

The
Big Hammer Skiff/Kayak is a combination trip with both
Kayaks and Skiffs. If you are a ‘fisherman’, you have to
experience a skiff trip at least once in your long-range
career. If you are like most long-range anglers, having
experienced this fishing once, you will just have to return
from time to time. Skiff trips are
an incredible experience where you truly will have a chance
to catch your personal best of Yellowtail, Halibut, White
Sea Bass and Calico Bass. Even when you are not out in a
kayak or a skiff you will be fishing onboard the Q-105

Day-13, Sun.
1-15-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
We left the zone and traveled in picture perfect weather. We
spent the day breaking down our gear and the crew washed the
boat. It was a nice break from the constant business of
getting up early and getting bait in the water taking a
break only for Chris’ excellent meals in the
galley. Today was spent nursing wounds with nuskin and
relaxing sore muscles.
The weather was so nice that we shut the engines down,
drifted 100 miles out to sea, and enjoyed the traditional
Qualifier 105 turkey dinner with all of the fixings. It was
a great meal. We will be in Cabo San Lucas in the morning
and nine of our 17 passengers will be dropped off. They will
fly home and meet the boat when it returns with their gear
and fish on the 18th.

Day-12, Sun.
1-14-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
For our final morning, we had a slow pick on the tuna. Just
a few fish on the kite first thing. We caught a handful of
fish for those with the patience for a long soak with a
sardine. The fish averaged around 100 pounds. Nothing
special in the way of big fish.
We had a nice afternoon
trolling for wahoo and ended up with a dozen or so for our
efforts. We have left the “zone” and are headed for Cabo San
Lucas to drop off 9 of our passengers. The trip has been
extremely successful from several standpoints; many of the
group have caught their largest fish and their first wahoo,
the group got along very well, the crew was outstanding, and
everyone had a fantastic time.
We ended up with two fish over three hundred pounds (Dick
Allen and Steve Benson) and a couple of fish over two
hundred pounds (Bob Franck and Dan Harnes).
We had a nice mix of seasoned long-range fishermen and those
who were new to the long trips. Steve Benson, who has never
done a trip longer than a day and one half, caught the
largest fish of the trip.
The crew was exceptional. Our every need was catered to from
Chris in the galley, to Tim, Travis, Aliyar, Spanky. Captain
Joe and Eric did a great job putting us on fish. Chris in
the galley takes pride in his job as the chef. He puts a
great deal of effort into every meal he cooks (he is also a
master at getting bit on the kite).

Day-11, Sun.
1-13-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
Today started off with a bang. The kite got bit time and
time again. The fish were all big. The biggest went to Dick
Allen and taped out at 330. Dan Harnes caught a 206, Keith
Turner got a 125, Dan Bliss 150, Paul Lepore got a 160, Tom
Kelleher got a 150. Chef Chris in the galley
is a master at presenting the kite baits to the unsuspecting
tuna. It's an impressive sight to see a 300-pound tuna roll
on bait dangling from a kite 50 feet away from the boat.
Chris is definitely the master.
Jim Chen, Lloyd Doyle, and Scott Harper caught fish all day
long on sardines.
A few wahoo were taken throughout the day on bait and jigs.
We will make bait tonight and prepare for our final day of
fishing tomorrow before we head to Cabo San Lucas to drop
off some fly home passengers.

Day-10,
Sun. 1-12-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
Today started slowly with a few
wahoo. We finally got settled in on a slow pick. We did not
catch a lot, but what we did get was good quality. Bob Frank
got us started with a fish that taped out at 238. Tim
Sanderson got a fish that taped out at 270. Scott Harper
lost a giant
fish after three trips around the boat. It was a good one,
but it got away. Dino landed a big one too. Paul Lepore,
Keith Turner, and Dan Bliss all landed nice fish as did Jim
Chen.
We landed a handful of wahoo for the day. Today could best
be classified as a slow pick. There were lulls in the action
and then we would get a little hit. Some of the bigger fish
came on Salamis, but some also came on long soaked sardines.
Fish were finicky today but did bite for those who were very
patient.
Chris in the galley continues to cook up some
incredible dishes. Tonight we had chicken picatta and last
night we had beef ribs. The food is absolutely terrific. The
crews are very talented in handling big fish, are also very
good-natured, and are interacting well with the passengers.
We are all having a great time. We
have plenty of bait left for our day and one half more of
fishing. We are currently looking
forward to tomorrow's action.

Day-9, Sun.
1-11-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
We started out the morning with a bang. First time long
ranger, Steve Benson landed a super cow on an Accurate 30
that was provided by the Qualifier 105. Steve caught his
fish on a sardine with 100#. The fish was landed in less
than an hour. The irony of Steve's fish is that the
manager of the local sporting goods store told him that he
shouldn't go on the trip, as he has never been on longer
than a day and one half trip. Steve called the charter
master with his concerns and he was assured that everyone
would band together and teach him about long-range fishing.
Steve listened and asked pertinent questions. He spent a
great deal of time at the rail and it sure paid off. Soon
the student became the teacher.
The rest of the day was a slow pick on the wahoo and tuna.
Dean Hepp, Tom Kelleher, Dan Harnes, and Paul Lepore each
caught nice fish on porpoise school ranging from 160 to 180
pounds. Our weather has improved significantly.

Day-8, Sun.
1-10-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
Our weather came down today just a bit. We had about 16
knots of breeze and the wind waves decreased significantly.
We started the day with a few troll stops on single jig
strikes of wahoo with no jig or bait fish. In the middle of the morning
we began picking away
at the fish and it lasted all day long. We had a handful of kite fish on
the double trouble sardine rig.
Bill Lupiba, Jerry Green, Dean Hepp, and Tom Kelleher all
caught nice fish today. Out total for the day were 18 wahoo
and 20 tuna. Hopefully the weather clams down and we get
some current.
Day-7, Sun.
1-09-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
The weather was up today which made fishing very
challenging. We had a nice snap on the Wahoo first thing in
the morning. We had a troll stop that resulted in a couple
of handful of fish. We settled into a long drift that saw us
get bitten off by a bunch of wahoo on the tuna gear.
Several were landed on straight mono. Those who targeted
them were rewarded for their efforts.
Today Lloyd Doyle was the hot stick catching a bunch of nice
tuna. He was bit throughout the day and constantly fighting
fish. He used an Accurate 30 with 100-pound spectra and a
short fluorocarbon top shot with a butt hooked sardine. Dino
got bit well today with a long soak on 100 pound. He lost a
nice fish on the anchor.
In the afternoon, the weather really came up. We took a
large swell over the bow. Thank goodness we are on a
105-foot boat with a very low profile. It was just a little
uncomfortable and fortunately, we were not traveling in it.
The weather made it tough to do long drifts as the wind
pushed us off away from our chum.
We had a decent pick on the tuna throughout the day.
Everyone ended up with fish today, although some did better
than others. I hope that the weather will come down
tomorrow. The reports are that we will still have some wind
but not as much. We still have four days left to fish. There
is still good sign of fish around. Once the weather
straightens out, we should really be in a good position to
take advantage of our opportunities.

Day-6, Sat.
1-08-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
It was very good fishing for us today. We had a blast
catching tuna's and wahoo. It was a little after first light
when we hooked our first fish, a wahoo. Then we scratched
all day. The fishermen on this trip are loving it, most have
a few tuna and at least 1 wahoo, a few have
more. Paul Lepore had a few fish today, a mix of wahoo and
tuna. Lloyd Doyle scored 3 wahoo on straight mono and a
couple of big tuna. Tim Sanderson was on fire as usual and
hooked a handful of good one's. Scott Harper, one of our
firefighters, is on his first "long" trip. He spent a lot of
time on the way down making up his own wind-on leaders and
it has worked out well for him. Today every time you saw
him, he was hooked up! He has learned how to fish the rod on
the rail and fishes like he has done it many times, as he
will surely do in the future. Dan Bliss is doing well on his
first " long" trip and has mastered the art of leader
building as well. He will be filling the freezer with some
tuna and wahoo also. Tom Kelleher, fishing the Q for the
last few years has done him well, he landed a fish around
140 lbs and a couple of wahoo. Hot stick today, Dean Hepp,
our steelhead and salmon guide friend from northern
California is here and kicking some serious A@#!!! He hooked
fish today that most would consider being fish of a
lifetime. Tuna up to 160 lbs and a few smaller. Over this
entire trip is going very well. Everyone has at least 1 big
tuna and a wahoo with some scoring a few more. Putting your
time in at the rail will pay off, with the guys fishing hard
earning a good catch so far. We have had some wind the last
couple days and a little warm weather would be nice. It is
just enough wind to have you in a sweatshirt. We will report
more tomorrow, the Q crew's put!!!
Day-5, Fri.
1-07-11, Paul Lepore 16-day trip
Today we woke up to a stiff breeze. We found some fish under
the porpoise that wanted to take some of our offerings.
Scott Harper caught a tough 155 pounder, Dick Allen caught a
50 pounder and that was it until the late afternoon when all
hell broke loose. We started with a wahoo
stop for a dozen fish that turned into a good tuna bite. We
had a couple of fish hanging all the way, until it got dark.
Bill Lupiba, Dan Harnes, and Bob Franck ended up with a
nice fish and so did Jim Chen. Jim's fish is pushing 160.
The fish this afternoon ranged from 75 - 160 pounds. We
fished 100 - 135 and many guys had multiple bites. Scott
Harper had the quote of the day; “I caught four of the
biggest fish of my life today.” Tim Sanderson and Scott set
the pace for the day hooking multiple fish. Keith Turner got
a nice one on the kite. Paul Lepore caught a few, hooked,
and handed a couple to people who had a tough time getting
started.

Day 2,
Tuesday, 1-04-11, Paul Lepore 16 day trip
We continue to
ride downhill toward the Promised Land. Today was spent
building wind on leaders, putting reels on rods, and the
initial process of readying our tackle. Those in the know
taught the new fishermen how. By the end of the day, the
galley looked like a tackle shop.
Later in the afternoon was the casting clinic. New anglers
were taught how to flick the spool to gain momentum to get
the most out of their cast. It's amazing how far you can
flip a sardine on an Accurate 30 with 100-pound line. The
goal is after hundreds of practice casts (and a few
backlashes) to be able to do it on Friday morning when the
100-pound tuna are boiling on the corner. It was fun to see
how far Steve B, Bob F, and Keith W have progressed.
It's entertaining to
see all of the personalities melding together as we get to
know our fishing partners for the next two weeks. The group
is very diverse ranging from a group of Redondo Beach
Firefighters (and a police officer), to a retired airline
executive, an accountant, a printer, a handy man, and a
handful of retirees. All in all, it is a cohesive group.
Much of the group is new to the long-range scene. This is a
particularly fun group as everyone is looking to increase
their personal best. Most of these seem to be in the
100-pound range. This should not be too difficult as most of
the fish in our destination are in the 100 - 140 range. Our
excitement increased as we pass by the Royal Star and heard
their report of excellent fishing below. Wow, Thursday
cannot come soon enough!
Today's highlight
was passenger Tom Kelleher raffling off a Seeker rod with
Aftco components for the friends of Rollo fishing program.
The lucky winner was Keith Turner (who was heard to say that
he never wins anything). Keith looks great behind the wheel
of his new rod.
We could not ask for better traveling weather. We could be
tied up to the dock and you would not know the difference.
It is amazing. The forecast for tomorrow is for some wind. I
hope that it blows by and does not have an effect on our
traveling. The bait tanks are full and the low profile wide
design of the Qualifier makes it one of the best riding
boats in the fleet. For now, our bait is holding out well.
The Redondo Beach guys
wanted to give a shout out to Captain Steve Nothern. I hope
that the money you spent on the new car is worth it. For the
record, we really miss you. To Captain Matt Johnson you were
quoted today as “God, please just let me hook one more time
and I promise to never _________ again”.
Dinner tonight was pork
tenderloin with Brussels sprouts. Chris our chef is putting
together some incredible meals. Every time we turn around
there is some other tasty morsel to eat. Please stop the
madness! Three great meals a day and snacks in between. We
are all going to need to let out our rod belts a notch or
two! I sure hope the tuna have the same appetite as the
passengers.
Captain Joe has
kept us informed about the plans for tomorrow. We will have
a seminar on how to catch tuna and should arrive at our
destination at around 0400. The crew is always around to see
if anyone needs anything. Hopefully the weather stays down
and the fish continue to bite.

Day 1,
Monday, 1-03-11, Paul Lepore 16 day trip
We headed south from San Diego yesterday straight into a
rainstorm that lasted until early in the morning today. It
was light at first but about dinnertime, it was raining
hard. It lasted till around 2 or 3 in the morning and then
cleared off fast. We spent the day putting rods
and reels together and some of the guys set up shop in the
galley and made wind-on leaders all day. We will have a
seminar on Tuesday morning and get everyone all lined up on
what we would like to see used for tackle this trip. We have
some reports of good fishing down south and are headed that
direction. Our passengers are all having fun and telling
stories from trips past. More tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!

Departure
day, Sunday 1-02-11, Paul Lepore 16 day
After a couple of weeks off for the holidays, we are off for
a 16-day, ride - fly home trip. We loaded the gang and
cleared the point around 1 pm. We have a light load and are
looking forward to a great trip. Our group is a mix of past
and first time Q 105 fisher-folks. Our
charter master is Paul Lepore, a longtime Q fisherman. He
has a group of his co-worker with him, a couple has
long-range fished, and a couple of them have not. We are
hoping for some action to show the first time guys what its
all about on these long trips, big tuna and a stack of
wahoo. We will be on the move south for a few days and will
be rigging our gear for the next couple of days. More
tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
