| Story by Calico Bob
Great Action, Great Service on Q-105's Sept. Skiff Trip First, the cast and crew of the Q-105 really "get it" from head man John Klein, to the crew of Joe, Cal, Alan, Travis, Johnny, Jiro and galley masters Cappy and Chris. (Note: Shea McIntee of Inside Sportfishing was on board for this trip and he was shooting lots of video that will eventually be posted on that site and once edited, become at least a couple of TV shows for next season...likely in January). I've fished the boat many times in the past and this was typical great service from all involved. Joe put us on fish every day even though we couldn't spend as much time at Sacramento Reef as we would have liked due to fog. Great yellowtail fishing (limits for all) during the trip, especially at San Pablo, good bass fishing at our stops and wow, Corey Sanden of MC Swimbaits was a terrific sponsor loading up each angler with a big supply of his swimbaits and 8" slugs. Got to fish on a skiff run with Corey and he absolutely put on a clinic using the 8" slugs rigged weedless and weightless with a short 6 1/2' or 6' rod, 80 lb braid and a short 80 lb fluoro topshot ! Really exciting fishing with Corey as he did sort of a "play-by-play" on each cast and retrieve. The sight of those calicos coming up behind the slugs and erupting on them...we'll, if that doesn't get your blood boiling, try hunting. Corey caught fish after fish and soon, I got the hang of it and used them with success on my next run. I understand captain Cal Link caught the big calico at 9 lbs 4 oz, but the highlight were the three broomtail grouper caught at Joe's secret spot. I believe the small one was about 42 lbs and the biggest of the three was just over 100 lbs! Very unusual catch, as I've done many skiff trips in the past and have seen only one or two others caught in all over many years. The food was too outstanding. Don't need to go into what was served for meals and snacks, but I can assure you it was all terrific (and caloric !). And the guys in the galley ....Cappy and Chris.... could be doing their own comedy show (on the ribald side). Terrific group of guys on board... 18 anglers plus six kayakers. Was interesting talking to the kayakers, as I've had no experience fishing on them or with them. They were all raving about the experience. And for those into variety, how about this...? At least 26 different species of fish were caught on this trip and we may have left one or two out that we missed! I would recommend these trips to anyone and I know the Q-105 is doing at least three of them next year. We have a few spots left on this spring trip call the office 619-223-2786 "Admitted tackle 'ho & horse racing aficionado" and 2005 past president of L.A. Rod |

Joe has been writing the day to day reports and we will post them in their entirety when he returns. We have had a gremlin with this satellite phone this year and it is pretty frustrating. First is was the antenna or three antennas and now we are on our 3rd hand set. The techs just can't figure our our problem. We apologize for the inconvenience. We know how much you like to read our fishing reports. We will have this fixed by our next trip.

Monday, November 16, 2009 Cowboy/Hoag 11-Day
Day 3
We awoke this morning to a strong offshore breeze and clear skies. We managed to land only a single
Yellowtail on the anchor. We were soon off the anchor and in search of porpoise schools. We had some
success right off the bat on a dozen Yellowfin from 20 to 25 pounds, but then we could not locate any
porpoise schools. The offshore breeze made looking for porpoise very difficult, as there were white
caps on top of the white caps. With our hat in our hand we started working south. By lunch with the
wind coming down, we were located in good area with several other vessels and picked away at the
Yellowfin Tuna for the rest of the afternoon. The grade of YFT is 15 to 25 pounds with the majority of
the fish being 15 to 20 pounds. Lots of rod and reel action, a great way to get the folks into the swing
of things for the trip. Tonight we are going to move down to north end of the ridge and prospect some
new waters with the Shogun. There have been some reports of a better grade of Tuna, mixed with
Marlin and Dorado. Great group of guys although the SD Charger fans including Jay’s brother Dean,
are still giving Jay a hard time. Our lady angler Gayle is no slacker and holding her own with the gents
on the back rail. Way to go Gayle. Thanks for reading our reports and make SURE you go to the 2010
schedule page and start planning ahead!!!! We have just printed a little gift certificate pamphlet that you
can give your better half if you need a little help getting going. It is the gift certificate you really want.
Wish us luck!!!
Thanks,
The Q105 crew and anglers
Just a simple travel day on the Qualifier. The normal routine of seminars, tackle prep, eating, eating
some more, naps, movies, books, bad jokes and finally eating some more again, have dominated the
day. Cappy’s tri tip is sure to delight all the carnivores on the boat tonight. I had a little sneak taste earlier
and asked Cappy, “What the name of the marinade that makes your tri tip so tender?” His reply, “Secret!”
You gotta love a good chef. Besides the fabulous food one of the nicest features in the Q105 galley is the
seating, everyone sits down to eat together. Two sittings are not necessary in order to get everyone fed
on this rig. Hot food all around, first time around. We do use paper napkins at dinner, but they are the
good ones and you can have as many as you need, eruridite eaters are welcome to bring their own cloth
napkins. One of anglers, Jay Archer this trip is from Colorado and given the Charger win and the Bronco
loss it has been a bit of a tough day for him. The Bolt boosters are finally taking pity on him and his big
lower lip. We will be getting rolling with the fish department tomorrow morning. Wish us luck!!!
Greetings from the bridge of the Qualifier 105. We departed Point Loma Sport fishing today just before noon and headed straight out to clear the Point. We had had the opportunity to pre-bait the Q while we were waiting for Big Ron Volmer who was able to make the trip at the last minute. Ron is a long time angler on the Q and we are glad to have him aboard, he is a great guy. I was reminiscing with Ron when he made his first trip on the Q105 in the late 80’s, amazing I look the same. LOL. The bait looks great and we are headed south with the Excel, Royal Star and Shogun as our wingmen tonight. Water temperature at the Coronado’s is 64 degrees and there is quite a bit of life in the first 40 miles below the Point. We will travel south, but the ½ and ¾ day runs should have the potential for a good November. With good weather, a nice sunset and the Isle of Cedros on our bow, it doesn’t get much better for the first night of our 11 day trip. Tom Lambert has returned to his fishing roots and has rejoined the Qualifier 105 crew and we wanted to welcome him back aboard. You all remember him, he holds the IGFA record for all tackle YFT @91LBS caught on the Q-105 a few years ago and he surfs.
Check the schedule page on the web for our 10 day pricing for next year, we think you will be pleasantly surprised.
P.S. The Q girls, Vicki and Tita will be at Baja Fish Gear in Lomita next Saturday promoting the stores July 2010 - 7 Day Trip. If you spend $100.00 on tackle at the store you can take $100 of the trip price. The ladies will have the certificates at the store and all the details. Joe just returned from the Larry Brown/Baja Fish Gear 10 day with a great catch of Yellowfin and Yellowtail from below Cedros.
Hope we can do as well this trip. Keep your fingers crossed for us. Manana

Baja Fish Gear Trip
Co-sponsored by Baja Fish Gear and the San Diego Fire Department, a ten-day trip aboard the Qualifier 105 with skipper Joe Crisci returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing November 14. There were two chartermasters, Larry Brown and Steve Puckett, and 25 anglers.
Catchy Tackle bombs accounted for the two jackpot-winning wahoo. John Caldwell of El Cajon won first place for a 48.5-pound skin. It bit on a red bomb wired to 50-pound Big Game line on an Avet HX reel and a Sabre seven-foot rod.
Mike Richardson of Haver City, UT won second place for a 34.8-pound wahoo that ate a purple and silver bomb. Jon Collins of Menifee stood in with his honorable mention 52.6-pound wahoo. That one was trolled up on an orange and black Marauder.
Everyone said they are spoiled about the big ones (300Lb), but this year they just weren’t around. There was still plenty of action to make our trip perfect and our arms sore. Great fishing. See ya next year.
Jack Pot Winners:
1st. Place: John Cornell 48.4 Wahoo
2nd Place : Mike Richardson 34.8 Wahoo
3rd Place: Peter Murray
and a nice Wahoo by Jon Collins 52.6 Wahoo (Troll)
Day 10 Nov. Fri. the 13th Baja Fish Gear/ Larry Brown
San Diego bound with a clean boat and happy anglers. Come say hi Saturday morning we should be in early.
Till Saturday, the crew of the Q's out!!!!!!
Day 9 Nov. Thurs. the 12th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
A great end to a great trip. Our day was spent fishing for yellowtail. We started out with some school size fish that
wanted to bite good. We had fish on surface iron, dropper loops and live bait. The guys had enough fish that we
were releasing some of the smaller fish to come catch after they grow up!! After a morning of tagging a lot of fish,
we went looking for some bigger fish. We cruised around for while looking at some areas we have got the big one
before. Just before we ran out of time, we found some bigger yellows. All most all the guys and our girl Donna had
bigger fish. We then headed for San Diego and will be cleaning the boat and doing some minor chores tomorrow
before we do a turn around on Saturday. We will be going fishing for 11 days with our fearless leader John Klein at
the wheel. This group is loaded with fish and will have some nice piles when we get into Pt Loma Sport fishing, so
if your buddy's with us there should be some B.B.Q.'S going down soon. Thanks to Larry Brown and Steve Puckett
for bring the goodie bags for our anglers. If you want a charter master that is on his game Larry is your man. He does
2 trips with us every year and they always sellout. Check out our trips for next year and sign up now!!!! Till tomorrow,
the Q crew's out!!!
Day 8 Nov. Wed. the 11th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
After a breakfast of homemade corn beef hash and eggs, it was time for more of yesterday’s activities. We found fish
early and stayed on them all day, following the porpoise and having a great day again!!
John Cornell had a great day today with a near limit of tunas for the trip. Kevin and Peter Murray are loading
up the freezer for a winter of fresh fish. Happy Birthday to Kevin who turned 20 on the 9th. Ed and Donna Manuszak
also are doing pretty well on the freezer fish. So is Porfirio Delgado (DEL), he has got his fair share of fish this trip and
is a pleasure to fish with. As far as a group, this trip has some first timer with some who have fished the Q many times.
We love it when a plan comes together and we can make memories for people to remember for a long time. With Larry
on board we will all have a picture c.d. to take home and share with all, along with a fillet or 2 !!! We are headed up the
beach tonight with a plan to get some yellowtail tomorrow as we are almost to limits on tuna !!!
So after some of Chris's grilled pork chops that were juicy and very tender we all head to bed with high hopes for tomorrow,
till then the Q crew's out !!!!
Day 7 Nov. Tuesday the 10th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
Ben Gay, that’s what the boat was smelling like tonight after a day of non stop action !!! We spent the day running
and gunning for tuna and we had some great fishing. It started about 8 am when we found some dolphins that were with
the yellow fin. We spun around on a spot of them and the tuna erupted behind the boat. We hooked a hand full each
stop for most of the day and ended up tagging fish for all our anglers today. We have a few first time long range fishermen
with us and after a slow start to the trip they are seeing what 10 day trips can be like. We have a nice load of all the
wanted species in the holds and everyone will be bring home plenty of fish !!! So the yellow fin wanted to play and so
did the yellowtail, with a mix of those fish for today. Tommy Anziano from Ontario is having a great time and is going t
o be fishing long range again, probably sooner then later !! On his 2nd trip is Dean Hepp from northern Cal. Dean is a
steelhead and salmon guide up north and will be hooking up with crewmember Tim this winter for a drift or 2 for some
steelhead !!! He is putting some nice fish on board and we hope will be back with us soon. As for strange things to
see on a long range trip this is right up there. Larry Brown was putting on a water balloon toss on the back deck
yesterday. Not good enough for Tim. He went inside and returned with some eggs !!! After a few tosses, the players
did just what Tim expected and pelted Larry with all the eggs !!!!!!! Overall it was a great day had here on the Q, hope
for more of the same tomorrow, the Q crews out !!!
Sorry we lost day 6 It went to the Cosmos
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 5 Nov 8We started out south today, way south. After sunrise, we started to troll around and had a look at a high spot not looked at in a while. We had 1 other code boat with us today. Both of us looked around all morning in great weather for nothing!! It was a tough day to say the least. We did manage to tag a handful of fish today and that was it. For our dinner tonight we had some lasagna that is a dish that Cris came up with but tonight Cappy was the one to cook it up. Its pretty good and all went to bed with a full tummy!! We also had a birthday today, Steve Puckett of Baja Fish Gear was the guy one year older, and we all sang to him. For tomorrow we are looking for some numbers for our group, we need it. Till then, the Q crew's out!!!!
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 4 Nov 7th
Today was a tough one for us. We started outside of Mag bay, and within a couple of hours, we had
1 dodo and no tuna. The thing is we were not the only ones to have it rough today. At lunchtime, we had
heard of only a couple of fish for the whole fleet!! Weather is good and so looking for fish is easy if there
were any to see. We landed 1 lone wahoo out off the beach a few miles in open water. The lucky angler
was Kevin Murray of Lakewood Ca. It was a nice wahoo and got all of our anglers on there feet. We
trolled all day for only a couple of marlin after that. We heard from one of our code boats of some nice
tunas down the line from us. We pointed the Q in that direction in hopes of getting to the area in the dark
tomorrow and finding a few fish for our group. We are hopeful for the next few days, and have a nice load
of bait for when we find'em. Wish us lots of luck, the Q crew. Capt. Joe, Cal, Tim, Travis J. Jiro, Cris, and
Cappy, till tomorrow.
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 3 Nov 6th
We started our fishing today with a stop on the upper end of the ridge. We trolled around for a
while with not much luck. Then just as captain Joe decided to make a move, one of our favorite regular
passengers Jesse James (Rte. S.D.F.D.) connected with a nice yahoo of about 45 pounds. We then
moved a few miles and dropped the anchor. It did not take long for the fish to get on us. We had good
action on some Yellowtail and yellow fin tuna with ever one pulling on fish that we both tagged and
released. We also saved a few tunas for a nice AI dinner tomorrow that will have even the few who
are not fish eaters wanting more!!! We are also moving down the coast tonight with high hopes for
some more action on yahoo and what ever else wants to test our anglers’ skills for the rest of the trip.
We have a great group on board and ever one is getting along great, wish us luck for the next few days.
SPECIAL NOTE: Steve Puckett would like to wish his lovely wife Sharon a happy anniversary and let her
know he is having a great time!! So, till tomorrow the Q crews out!!!!
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 2 Nov 5th
Day 2 update from Charter Master Larry Brown:
Our second day of cruising down to the fishing grounds in perfect weather was interrupted by
phenomenal meals and our routine fishing seminar. After a great breakfast of fluffy pancakes and
thick bacon, a delicious Ruben sandwich for lunch, and a world class, 5-star grilled pesto scampi
linguini dinner; our group concluded we didn't really care if we caught any fish. Yeah, right. Tomorrow
we'll be in the zone and can't wait for furious wahoo, big Dorado and mad dog tuna to charge the boat.
I want to acknowledge the generosity of my 14 sponsors who provided raffle prizes for this fishing charter:
Shimano,AA Worms/Optimum Baits, Baja Fish Gear, Big Hammer Swimbaits, Booyaa, Braid, Chuck
Byron Art, HIgh Tide/Transition Jigs, Izorline, Mdra for their T-Shirts, Owner Hooks, Sport fishing
Report.com and Western Outdoor News. Steve Puckett represented Baja Fish Gear and brought
T-shirts for all anglers and crew as well as tons of gifts from his store, thanks to Ed Tschernoscha.
We held our super raffle last night which includes a cash fundraiser for four different Youth Fishing Programs and I am proud to report our generous anglers contributed exactly $1,000, which is a new record for this year's Larry Brown charity trips. A special thanks to all of our anglers and all of our sponsors for making this possible. A hundred raffle tickets were purchased and every single raffle ticket resulted in a prize/gift for our anglers donated by our sponsors. The first and last prizes to be drawn were for the 2-speed Tyrnos Reel and the all roller guide Tallus stand up rod both donated by Shimano. John Cornell won the Shimano Reel and Peter Murray won the Shimano rod. A huge thanks to Shimano!!!! We are all in high spirits and ready for a great fishing trip. We all send our love and thanks to our families for supporting our fishing addiction.
10-Day Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown/SDFD
Day 1 Nov 4th
Well we have our sat phone / computer problems taken care of, and are headed out for 10 days.
With a couple days rest behind us, we departed on the Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day trip.
With us are Larry Brown who is representing a list of company's that we will thank during the trip.
Also on the boat is Steve Puckett of Baja Fish Gear. These guys had raffle today for a table full of
nice giveaways, including a rod, reel, tools, some nice clothes and all kinds of fishing tackle.
(We will list some winners and Spencer's tomorrow since they are still doing this down stairs
as I'm writing this.) As for the trip plans, with some beautiful bait and a bunch of returning passengers
we have great weather to fish our way south. We will be prepping gear today and tomorrow
morning before making a move one way or the other. We hope for a mixed bag of species this trip,
and plan on a few fish dinners so these guys will need to start catching some fish soon if they want
to eat !!!! Just kidding, the guys in the galley have a great menu planned for this trip as always.
We will report more tomorrow and at that time I will thank some of our sponsors for this trip, so till then,

Hurricane Bank Cows/Rusty Hook, Accurate Reels, Seeker Rods 15-Day
Qualifier 105 docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 31 after a 15-day trip sponsored by The Rusty Hook, Seeker Rods and Accurate reels. Joe Crisci was the skipper, and owner Alex Masumoto of The Rusty Hook was aboard, as were Bob Michener for Accurate and Brian Porter for Seeker. There were four cows on the boat.
“The bites came in flurries,” said skipper Crisci, “with the big ones biting best from three in the afternoon until five or later. You had to be ready. There were small flying fish around, and we found some red crab in some of the fish. We had nice weather.”
Brian Porter of Downey won first place for a 236-pound Yellowfin he bagged on the boat’s kite outfit with a double sardine bait rig. He said it had 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
“I used my Two by Four Super Seeker bait stick for everything else,” he remarked. “It was the only stick I used the whole time. It was a time of day thing for the bite, from three until closing time.
“Sardines were our only bait,” continued Porter. “Most of us fished with 100-pound line.”
Phil Lisi of Costa Mesa got a brace of cows, tuna over 200 pounds. He won second place for a 229.9-pounder, and he also got a 208.8-pound Yellowfin.
“The big one fought like hell,” said Lisi. “He took me around the boat three times.”
Lisi said he fished with sardines on 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He used 130-pound Big Game fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
Jeff Bruner of Westminister got third place for a 215.2-pound tuna. He said he also used the boat’s kite rig, with squid bait on a pair of 14/0 Mustad 7691 hooks.
Tony Montez of Moreno Valley caught a 213-pound tuna on sardines under the kite, with the boat’s outfit.

Wack The Wahoo 14-Day
Bill Roecker for FishingVideos.com & the San Diego Sportfishing Council
October 15, 2009
Cowbells Are Ringing for the Q105
The season’s first cow tuna, yellowfin over 200 pounds, arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 15, when skipper Joe Crisci parked Qualifier 105 at the main dock to offload his 17 anglers, their gear and fish from the Hurricane Bank. The 14-day trip was a Loftus-Martin charter. Wahoo and tuna weren’t easy to come by, said the anglers, but there were enough fish so some anglers had two or three cows, and many fish, over 100, of tuna between 100 and 200 pounds. There were 12 cows.
Joseph McNamara of Campbell got two of those big tuna, and one fish took first place in the jackpot. It weighed 239.6 pounds; the other tuna went 201 pounds even. The big one came on the kite with a flying fish for bait. McNamara said he used a 12/0 Mustad 7691 hook on 130-pound maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra, with an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod, to do the job in a long hour and a half.“He went down, then out and around the anchor line,” said Joseph. “We got him, thanks to the crew. It was awesome! Of course I’ll do it again.”
Wes Cerny of Fallbrook won second place for a 237.6-pound tuna. He took that one with a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook on 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 130-pound maxima line with 130-pound Big Game Spectra on a Penn VSX 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6455 XXH rod. He said the fight went an hour and 15 minutes.
Moe Alcala of Westminster won third place for a 229.8-pounder. He also caught one that weighed 217.6 pounds. He said he used the double sardine rig under the kite, with 7/0 Mustad Demon hooks, 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. He also got a big fish of about 180 pounds on the troll, with an orange and clack Marauder.
Co-chartermaster Larry Martin got a brace of cows at 218 and 206.6 pounds. He fished sardines on 8/0 Eagle Claw hooks tied to 130-poundSeaguar fluorocarbon, 1230-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 7465 rod wrapped by Smitty G. “I got those on the “Dolly Parton” rig,” said Larry. “Two bobber balloons. The big one fought about a half-hour.”
Rich Voss of Westminster bagged a brace at 221 and 215.4 pounds. The big one came on a sardine under the kite, he said. He used a Mustad 7/0 hook on 130-pound Maxima line and 130- pound Line One Spectra on a Penn VS 70 reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod. The fish was onboard in only 20 minutes.
Ron Hirao of Huntington Beach took a 217-pound yellowfin with a sardine on a 5/0 Mustad Hoodlum hook, with 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 130-pound Jin Kai line and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on a Shimano 50 LRS reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. Ron said the time of the fight was one hour.
Dan Harnes of Thousand Oaks caught a 208.4-pound tuna on a squid under the kite. He pinned the squish on a 12/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
Co-chartermaster John Loftus bagged a 201.6-pound tuna with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Maxima fluorocarbon, 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Accurate 50 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod, and got his fish in 45 minutes.
Sharks weren’t a problem, said the anglers on Qualifier 105. Skipper Crisci said his sardine bait didn’t care for the 85-degree water on the bank, however.“They got real weak after a couple of days,” he noted. Still, he had a good catch for the first trip into the deep southern waters this season.

Day 8 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/08/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
We woke up to overcast skies with wind and ground swells fishing was slow until 3 PM when the
bigger Tuna went on the bite we caught some and lost some the High lights: Joseph McNamara's was 220 lbs
he hooked and lost one that was a little bigger in the afternoon, Rich Vos had a 140 #,202, and on the last troll
before we left the bank Vos caught a 199 pound Tuna. Fred Pease a 110 #, Jeff Cakin a 193# and John
Loftus a 216.The totals for 4 days at the Hurricane Bank are 41 Wahoo, 21 Tuna under 100 #s and 86
Tuna over 100 pounds We believe 16 of those will be Cows at 200 pounds or more.
We had fresh baked cinnamon rolls for the morning snack, Wahoo ceviche for the afternoon snack
and dinner was pasta with shrimp and scallops with????????-sauce. Dan Harnes one of the fisherman had
a birthday today, we all sang Happy Birthday to him.
We secured our gear for the ride north, we still have a couple of days to fish, we hope to make bait in
Mag bay and fish our way up the ridge.

Day 7 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/07/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
This is fishing day 3 at the Hurricane Bank, weather is warm and humid with bright sunshine,
the wind picked up today but it is still very comfortable. After a slow morning, we had a bang up fishing after
noon with 5 Tuna under 100 lbs and 21 Tuna over 100 lbs.
Some high lights: Rick Voss caught a 220 & 180 lb, Ross Yasukochi a 190 lb, Larry Martin a 207 &
222 lb, Joe Mcnamara a 195 lb Earl Sandefur 175 lb, Fred Pease 165 lb, Moe Alcala 216 lb,all caught on Line
Sponsored by Maxima, there was such a flurry of action all the crew including the galley guys were working the
deck gaffing and helping with tangles.
We enjoyed an afternoon snack of fresh Shashimi. dinner of fresh caught Wahoo or Tri- Tip and fresh
baked Bundt cake with a shredded fruit topping.
We will fish here again tomorrow but likely move on after that because our bait supply is getting low, due
to the 85 degree water.
Wish us Luck,
All The Best,
The Crew and Fisherman of
the Qualifier 105Day 6 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/06/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
The Hurricane Bank weather today is hot & humid with bright sunshine and a light breeze.
Trolling for Wahoo kept us busy most of the morning. In the late afternoon the Tuna went on the bite for
about 3 hours, our fish total for the day was 22 Wahoo, and 48 Tuna. This is a high grade of fish, David
Rash caught one that taped at 202 lbs, Rich Voss at 204 lbs, Dan Harnes at 199 lbs, Ron Hirao had one
over 200 but it was shark bit, we caught lots of fish from 100 to 190 lbs
We continue to enjoy great meals by Chief Chris Veratudela a high light for today’s lunch was a
seared Ahi salad. In addition to breakfast lunch & dinner each days menu includes a mid morning snack
and a afternoon appetizer.
We will be fishing here tomorrow and hoping that we can repeat today. We were kept very busy
with a wide-open afternoon bite. At one point we had everyone fishing hooked up to a big fish. Our hot
stick was Rich Voss, it seemed he had a fish on all afternoon!! He had 3 nice fish for the day. Richard
Bybee has had a good trip so far landing a wahoo and a nice tuna around 140# that he said would keep
his wife real happy!!

Day 1 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus and Martin 14-Day
We departed on the first long trip of the year for the Qualifier105 today, October 1st, the Loftus and Martin
14-Day Wack The ahoo charter. Our charter masters this trip are John Loftus and Larry Martin. When it
comes to charter masters these anglers put in a tremendous effort organizing their trip, so that long time
and first time anglers can optimize the fishing potential of any trip.
It is always a fun moment during the trip when the fishing gifts from Loftus and Martin hit the galley tables.
This year there were tools, shirts, hats, flashlights, pocket knifes and some other cool stuff in a nice Loftus
and Martin backpack. Even the crew received a L&M back pack full of goodies. Yeah for us!!!!
In addition, all during the trip they will give away additional prizes from the tackle industry sponsors.
We will thank and name all the sponsors that donated swag for the trip, as the give a-ways occur.
This trip we are going to be trying to locate Wahoo on our we down the Baja coast as we fish our
way south.
After our traditional, welcome aboard lunch of hot dogs and chili with all the fixin’s and a great first night
chicken dinner, along with agood night sleep, we will be begin rigging gear for most of the day tomorrow.
The gear for Wahoo and Tuna are a test for all tackle, everything must be perfectto land these beasts.
We will be reporting everyday, keep up with what we are doing as the trip goes on, by reading our reports

A beautiful weekend to go out and meet the Q-105 at San Clemente and fish my own boat while staying on the Q. What a great idea. The Kayakers had fun and skiff fishing looked great. Thanks for a perfect weekend.

MC Swimbaits Skiff Kayak 7-Day 2009
Grouper, yellows and others. 26 different species
were caught. Thanks to Cory and all the organizers
for making this trip so unique. Next year is already
1/2 full hurry and get your spot reserved
What a way to spend your 60th
Birthday " Dave"
Thanks heaps for ALL that you do
for us at the "Q"
Day Six: Thursday Sept. 24th 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
We made our way back up
to our "spot", thank God for GPS, and it was socked in by that darn forsaken
fog again. As we stuck it out and fished the outer edges of the reef (a nice
halibut was caught in the process), the fog started to lift. The skiffs and
kayaks were once again put in the water and the anglers were soon floating
over the thick of the kelp. The Toad bass that they were looking forward to
catching the other day came out to play with a vengeance. Fishing the big
slugs in the mat paid off big time, bass up to 9.4lbs were caught by anglers
in the skiffs and kayakers. They were nailing the big bass fishing swimbaits
dropped down through pockets in the mat as well. Captain Joe anchored up on
a nice rock on the outside and the boat was soon in a nice bite for a
variety of fish (yellowtail, shallow- water reds, sheep head, calicos,
sandies, barries, bonito), with a number of them coming to the boat on
angler Dave Klein's homemade "knife-jigs". As the sun started to set,
everybody was loaded back up on the boat, the call for dinner was given, and
the galley was soon packed. Prime rib, bakers with all the fixins, steamed
broccoli, and a delectable bread pudding for dessert rounded off another
excellent day fishing aboard the Q-105.........Day Five: Tuesday Sept. 22nd 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
The morning started out with a bang. When they say positioning is everything, in fishing that cannot be more true. As we hauled yellows over the rail, we could see another boat in the same area with not a bent rod on the deck. The yellows were eating everything that hit the water (slugs, swim baits, bait, iron....), watching 5-6 yellows fight and crash on a slug is a sight to see. Angler Neal Cooke had bigger and better things in mind as he pinned a live bonito to a rig and sent it to the bottom, and guess what? (You wont know until you come down at see at the dock or till we upload the pics) With that being said we made our way up the coast to Cedros to fish our "Grouper Hole" that has produced for us many times before. Sure enough, not one, not two, but THREE large Broomtail grouper came over the rail for Scott McKay, Neal Cooke once again, and our very own Johnny Utah. (I think Mr. Cooke should go play the lotto when he gets to the dock.) The late afternoon also kicked out a few 'Butts, yellows, both sand and calico bass for those who still had enough energy to stand at the rail. We are headed back up the line to fish our "spot" back up the line as we all chow down on grilled pork chops, zucchini, and a wild rice pilaf. Mmmmmm.......
Day Four: Monday Sept. 21st 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
We woke up to beautiful weather at the "Bush" and launching the skiffs and kayaks went very fast with the anticipation of catching big toad bass. Within minutes, the skiffs and kayakers were catching quality bass on the swim baits provided by Corey Sanders. The big boat poked around and scratched up some yellows and big bass for the anglers (and the cooks) while they waited for their runs in the skiffs. The afternoon was spent around East Island and bass were on the chew. The kayakers were hammering the tough lil buggers right up on the rocks inside the kelp line (I think some skiffers were wishing they were on a kayak). Once the wind started to pick up, we loaded everybody back on the boat and enjoyed a delicious Tri-tip dinner. Tomorrow we will be headed below Cedros to fish the coast for yellows on the slugs...
Day Three: Sunday Sept. 20th 7-Day MC Swimbaits Skiff//Kayak
We started day three down around the south end of Cedros with another filling breakfast with those witty chefs in the galley. Once the "skiffers" and "yakers" were off on there way, they found a steady pick at bass and also found some yellows to come on the plastics. The wind picked up a little off the beach and Captain Joe used his better judgment and took the boat around to the weather side of the island. What we found was amazing weather and even better yellowtail fishing. The skiffs and kayakers found incredible bites on both yellows and bass. Even the big boat got into a wide-open bite for the anglers waiting for their shot on the skiffs. Once the sun started making its way down; every body made their way back to the boat as the smell of B.B.Q. Chicken enticed them to the galley for dinner. We are picking up the anchor and making our way to the "Bush" to see what its holding in store for us. More to come...
This morning as we rolled into our first stop, the fog was thicker than the kelp. However, as the sun rose
over the mountains in the distance, the fog eventually lifted and the sun was soon beating down upon us.
Once the skiffs had been outfitted and launched, it was time to put in the kayakers with their fully loaded
personal skiffs. The bite was much slower than we had hoped for, nonetheless bass in the 5-6lb range
were being caught by bought "skiffers" and "yakers" Even a handful of yellowtail made it on the deck of the
big boat as we made our way around the outer laying stringers of kelp. We made a couple of drifts for the
elusive Flatties, with one coming over the rail for Kevin Mattson in the 20-25lb ranges. We eventually
loaded everybody up and started making our way down the line towards Cedros Island. The night was
topped off with another great meal consisting of NY steaks, a cheddar cheese green bean casserole,
and twice-baked potatoes, followed up with an awesome pineapple upside-down cake.
Day two was spent predominantly offshore scouting around for paddies holding fish. The paddies that
we found were holding some smaller grade Yellowfin and yellowtail. We arrived at Benitos later in the
afternoon and found a good pick on some better grade yellows coming to the boat on both the iron and
bait. At sundown, we left the island in search of better fishing along the coast. Cappy and Chris once
again put out an amazing dinner consisting of lamb chops, Greek peas, and lemon potatoes...definitely
good grinds.
The only thing that comes to mind about day three is "WOW!!!!” The fish we left the island to find were waiting for us with enormous appetites, and provided non-stop action for all the passengers aboard for a solid 3 three hours in the morning right after sun-up. It was madness with the entire rods bent and anglers shuffling up and down the rails screaming "Color!!!" and "Gaff!!!” To say the least, a good time was had by all. After the bite slowed down, we moved on up the line to Cedros. Captain Joe once again put us on the right spot and yellowtails up to 35# were coming over the rail up until sundown. After a long day of sore backs and arms, we made our way up the lee side of the island and enjoyed a B.B.Q rib dinner that was finger lickin' good. Yum, yum, gobble, gobble...
Day One: Friday Sept. 18th MC Swimbaits 7-day Skiff//Kayak
We left the docks today with tanks full of good-looking, lively bait. With all of the free giveaways that Corey Sanders from MC Swimbaits (swim baits, slugs, hooks, springs, hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and a few lucky crew even received rods) handed out, we highly doubt that we will even need the bait. Weather permitting and fish willing, Sac Reef, here they come. Scott and his gang were quoted as saying " we are giddy with excitement to go on this trip. As the waters are glassing off, sun is staring to set, and the smell of Chicken Alfredo with garlic bread fills the galley, thoughts of landing world class Calicos at one of our favorite bassin' holes on our way down the line dance in the heads of these eager anglers. For some reports of our past Skiff trips go to our Skiff-Kayak schedule and "Click" on the Link" More from the crew tomorrow. Go Chargers!!!!

Day 4/Avet/ Salas Jigs/Larry Brown 9/5/09
Today we started
with big plans after yesterday. The weather came up a bit during the
night, windy, choppy seas for us at daybreak. We started to look
around after a little fishing in the dark for nothing. It was a long
time before we found some fish that would bite. We found some
albacore that were hungry and dropped a few in the R.S.W. after a
short stop. Then it was back to glassing for the crew as we searched
for the morning with only a handful of tunas. The day was tough for
most the code boats in the area. We have plans to go kelping
tomorrow with yellows and dodos in mind. Most of our group has all
the fish they want and are looking for some action on the kelps,
with a couple of dodos all would be happy!!! We have some spots on
our fall trips still open, time for wahoo (?), big tuna (?), ect,
call the office for info or to signup for next season as the
schedule is being planned as you read this. Till tomorrow, the Q
crew's out!!!
Day-3-Avet/ SalasJigs/Larry Brown 9/3/09
Wow, what a great day. Last night Captain Joe moved the boat to a zone where another code group partner had scored
some bluefin. We got into a classic plunker bite of beautiful grade, 25 - 50 pound bluefin tuna. Everybody on board had
at least a couple of nice bft going into the late afternoon. With two hours to go before sunset and the full moon rising we
found a school that wanted to play. They stuck with us and for a full hour it was epic tuna fishing with every bait getting
slammed. Bloody Decks would have been proud, because our decks were pandemonium and bloody. For a while, the
sinker rigs were the ticket and of course a heavy Salas 6X Jr was a sure thing. Big Hammer Swim baits by Sunrize and
Optimun Plastics by AA Products who both provided free products to our anglers also fooled several nice tuna. The new
Avet Raptor was on board spooled with 60 pound spectra and a very short 40 pound fluoro leader and it tamed dozens of
tuna with ease. This reel gets 17 pounds of drag at strike and with the dual drag system and low speed all you do is turn
the handle and bring these bruiser tuna to gaff.
Thanks again to all of our generous sponsors and our crew for making the day so memorable.
Two more days of beautiful weather and productive fishing -Booyaa!!!!!!!!!!!, Who by the way is also a generous sponsor
of our trip
Love to all our families;
Charter Master Larry Brown and the Q-Crew
Day 2/ Avet/Salas Jigs/ Larry Brown
Hello Fellow Qualifier Anglers;
We are enjoying gorgeous weather during the hurricane. Great boat, great crew, great cuisine and great
commeraderie and we have just ended day one on the Qualifier 105. Captain Joe stopped the big boat
on a meter mark last night and we awoke to hungry Yellowfin tuna at grey light. We enjoyed a good bite
on a beautiful grade of YFT up to a nice 50 pounder caught by JC Hardemion. We saw a cool variety
of fish during the day with dorado, Yellowfin tuna and skip jack before Nona Grancell caught the first of
our albacore. Only 3 of the longfins were boated but they were all 35 pound class fish. We are making a
move tonight to an area where a code group boat had a good score on some big Bluefin, so after a
beautiful sunset and tasty, perfectly prepared tri tip steak dinner we are excited about our prospects for
tomorrow.
All of our anglers want to thank all of our sponsors including Avet, Salas Lures, Izorline, Western Outdoor
News, Booyya,High Tide Lures, Braid Products, 976TUNA, AFTCO, Chuck Byron Kids Arts and Fishing
Program.
Wish us good luck and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

6-Day Accurate Reels (8/31/09)
Another great day fishing the Qualifier 105. We awoke to grease calm weather this morning. First thing, we tried for some yellowtail but they did not want to bite for us. We pulled anchor before sun up and started to look around for some tunas. Within about 15 minutes, Capt. Joe found them. We drifted with them for a few hours and put a nice grade of fish in the holds. Today we had Jack from Accurate giving away a reel to the biggest fish. Big winner was Rich Callen from Duena Park with a tuna of 62 lbs. Nice fish and a great prize for a great fisherman, see you next year Rick!!! If you want to try out some Accurate gear, think about one of our yearly trips with them. Jack has enough gear for all, again thank you Jack!!!! We are in San Diego tomorrow and have a day of before our next trip so till then, the Q crew's out!!!
6-Day Accurate Reels (8/30/09)
What a morning we had today! We spent the night putting some macarel in the deck boxes for bait. About 4am, we woke the boat to catch some bait. With a dropper loop rig in the trolling strap, we loaded up until a 50 lb+ yellowtail was put on board by Capt Joe. That was all it took to get a few more guys to set up droppers. Within a few minutes we hooked a couple more, this time it was not a yellows but white sea bass!!! It was an exiting couple of hours to say the least. We have first time long-range fisherman Taylor Barriger on the Q. He has had a great trip hooking Yellowfin, yellowtail, and a see bass that will be over 50 lbs!!! Also with us is Paul Everts, a past Q fisherman. Paul has had a fantastic trip also, he has a tuna and a couple of whites that will all be in the running for jackpot, see you next year Paul!! We would like to thank Jack Nilsen of Accurate for the shirts, the rods and reels for all to use and the great company he gives all on board his trips, thanks Jack. Till tomorrow the Q crews out !!!
6-Day Accurate Reels (8/26/09)
HOT, that is what our day was !! We fished Guadalupe today and the weather was sticky. We rolled into the island right at first light. We found the black porpoise that have held fish for a couple weeks now. They did not disappoint, we hooked a couple of nice fish on the first stop. We ended up with about 1 fish for all on board, and these are mean tunas of around 40 lbs on average. The guys on board all had their hands full with these fish. Tomorrow we are going to be closer to the beach looking for a load of yellowtail. We hope for some action tomorrow as today was a pick bite to say the least. We will report back then, the Q crew out !!!
6-Day Accurate Reels Trip (8/25/09)
This morning we put the trolling jigs in the water before sunrise. It wasn't long before we trolled
up an Albacore tuna. A couple more on bait then we trolled on. After a few stops like that we had
a period of time that we were seeing fish, but they were not biting !!!! After We finally found a
school that would bite. We put some fish in the R.S.W. and made a short move before hooking
up on the troll again. We ended our day with a nice catch of fish for the day. After some ribs for
dinner most were prepping their gear for our day tomorrow. We will be at the Lupe first light
with hopes for some Yellowfin tuna.
Till tomorrow the Q crew ( Capt. Joe, Cal, Jiro, Tim, Travis II. Chefs: Chris, and Cappy) are out !!!!
A link to a report and picture of our dear friend Del. We will miss you buddy.
A toast of "The Captain" to you. From all of your friends.

Congratulations Ryan
this was his first fishing trip
2-Day Offshore/ Bonanza Trip (8/23/09)
We're back!! We departed today on a
2-day open trip. The last few days we had a couple of 1.5-day trips. The
fishing was o.k. but not what you hope for with such limited time. The
good news is today the albacore decided to bite for some of the other
boats. With some bait already on board, we needed only a short time at
the bait receivers. With our tanks topped off, we departed the point
around 12:30. We had to run for a few hours before we reached the area
that was holding some fish. It took a couple of troll teams before our
first jig strikes. We boated a couple of the tunas we were hoping for,
albies!!! We then had a couple of more stops before a big school of fish
showed up. Just about everyone on the trip was bit at the same time.
With a few casualties at first,
it was wide open for just a short time before they split. We ended up
with a box full of fish to end the day. Wish us luck for tomorrow, till
then the Q crews out!!!!

1.5-Day Trip (08/20/09)
1.5-day trips are a great way to fish for the big offshore species without committing to a full long-range trip. The boat leaves in the evening and travels all night to the fishing grounds, going out much farther than the one day boats can. Fishing starts first thing in the morning and continues all day without having to worry about the return trip. After a first class dinner, you retire to your stateroom while the boat runs all night and delivers you to the dock early in the morning. You've maximized your fishing time and there's no late, tired drive home.

Thanks guys, great people make a great trip, Oh, fishing was good too.
A special thanks to Chris/Dale for putting this together. See ya next year
Call Dale about next years trip.
Coastside 5-Day (08/16/09) We finished up our trip fishing off shore today. The kelps were few and far between today. We scoured an
area that had the right conditions, but few fish. We scratched away all day and ended up with a nice catch
of Yellowfin tuna. The group overall has enough fish that most ended up with more than they had planned!!!
Most of the gang came down from nor cal so they are planning how to pack up there fish to keep them cold,
and planning a couple of cutting parties for back at home. Fellow coastsiders should contact someone they
know from the trip to help out (and maybe score a fillet of two!! ) Thanks to our charter master Dale Myer for
putting the group together and bringing some nice swag for all!! Putting a group together is a lot of work and
time on the phone, so thanks Dale!!! The next trip for Coastside is a 15-day in the spring and that trip is
already full!!! We have a couple 1.5-day trips on line for this coming up week so if you would like to fish the big
Q call the office for more information. So, till then, the Q crew's out!!!!
Coastside 5-Day (08/15/9)What a dy we had here on the big Q!! We arrived at our fishing destination at first light. We started to look around and Joe spotted some big spots of birds working a big area of bait balls. It was not long till we were in a wide-open yellowtail bite. We have a couple of first time long-range fisher people on board and they are having a great trip. Steve and Janice Lowry of Walnut Creek love their first trip. Janice showed the old pros how to do it today, landing 10 yellows before some had 2!!! The kids did well again, landing their share today. We had a drawing for a new Seeker rod at dinner, Dale Myer, our charter master for this trip put all the names of our farther/son combos into a hat and Capt. Joe drew one. Big winner, Rich Walker of Chico won a nice Seeker 25 lb stick. We will be off shore tomorrow looking for kelps and tunas, wish us luck. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Coastside 5-Day (08/13/09)
We awoke to great weather and a full belly of homemade hash and eggs and pulled the anchor before
sunrise. After a short time, we found a spot of porpoise which had tuna with them. We made a drift and
put a hand full of nice grade fish in the RSW. Our morning went like this, find the porpoise, make a drift
and hook 6 to 10 fish each stop. These fish are strong and put all tackle and anglers skills to the test.
Today we had the kids all hooking and landing fish once again. Anson Konstantinopolous (say that
last name three time fast!) was on fire hooking a number of fish and landing them like a pro. Bye the way
he is 8 years old and about 4 1/2 feet tall!!!!! His 12-year-old brother Hayden also did very well today.
Another hot stick, landing a hand full of fish today was, John Hibner. John is a great fisherman and we
are glad to have him and his sons Ben and Tom on board. Crew member andlicensed captain Tim’s
dad Dennis and Tim’s brother Rich are on board. Rich landed a nice 30 lb + Dorodo today off a kelp.
We are on our way to fish some yellowtail tomorrow, so till then, the Q crews out!!!
Yesterday we split San Diego on our 5-day Coastside trip. We headed to the Lupe and today we fished.
Here is more from Coastside member George (Chayson'M). With 23 Coasties on board, we were in hopes
of some good fish and opted to skip the Bluefin and albacore off shore and go for some of the quality YFT
out at the Island. We arrived at the Island at about 11:00am and started to look around and troll some fish up.
We spotted some black dolphin within 10 minutes and were instantly gratified with some quality fish. Within
the first couple of hours, we hook and landed about 20 fish in the 50 -70 lb ranges.
Mr. White also thrilled the entire boat as we had 3 up close and personal visits. This fish was AMAZING; it
came up within 5 feet of the boat and was estimated to be 15 to 17 feet long! It was absolutely amazing to
see such a huge fish in such clear conditions... and she didn't even help herself to any of our fish today
(Knock on Teal)!
The rest of the day was pretty much the same with a steady pick at the fish till about 6 PM. Nothing wide
open but a good steady pick. We did have one good run on the kite for about 6-7 straight baits getting bit
within 20 seconds. Totals for the day were 49 Tuna. Hats off to the kids on board, Josh, Ben, Daniel,
Anson and Hayden. Between the 5 of them, they landed 13 of the fish, more than 25% of the total fish catch!
Most of the kids are on deck tonight catching Scad Mackeral up to 4 lbs, it's a wide-open bite.
Quite a thrill to see how good these kids are at fishing, they are able to out fish most of the adults.
Weather today was very nice with a slight breeze to about 15 kts in the afternoon. Until tomorrow... wish us luck!! Thanks Goerge, now to a funny story for the day. Long time Q crewmember Jiro is back and today was on his back!! He sat down in a small folding chair and the thing fell to pieces. He fell over and looked like a turtle that was turned on its back, good times!!!!! The Q crews out!!

Texas 5-Day (8/10/09)
We
finished up on our trip this morning with a few tuna fish. They were
nice fish; about 60 lbs and all of them were hooked on sardines. We had
to end our fishing around 11 am and headed for San Diego. We cleaned the
boat and after lunch, it will be a couple of odd jobs then a nap or a
movie for most. We will be in and out tomorrow with a turn around for 5
more days. The next trip is the Coastside 5 day. Coastside is a group of
fishing people from mostly the San Francisco Bay area. They all love to
fish and are one of our favorite groups, as they all have a good time
and love to play small pranks and jokes on each other. I will let you
know about any things that go on. You may want to look at their website,
it's loaded with all kinds of information from fishing tips and
locations to boats for sale and all kinds of other stuff. We will report
back then, so keep us on your favorites and check back everyday!!! We
have had a great season so far and hope to see you all riding the big Q
soon. The Q crew ( Joe, Cal, Jiro, Tim, Travis, Cris and Cappy) are out
for now !!!Texas 5-Day 8/9/09
We fished
off shore today. The weather is not the best for looking around for
kelps or breaking fish. We hung in there and put together a productive
day. We ended up with a nice catch of Yellowfin tunas, yellowtails, and
some dodo's to put down in the wells. A nice catch that was made
yesterday I forgot to mention. Henry Nixon
is here with his dad Will
and friend Charlie Stucky from San
Antonio Texas. At the Lupe he hooked his first marlin, the fish did what
people travel half way around the world to witness. It jumped and jumped
and tail walked on the surface right at the boat then sounded deep.
After a brief fight on 40 lb tackle the fish won its freedom and swam
away. Needless to say Henry was very happy to get to pull on such a
beautiful fish. With one more day to fish, we have plans to finish
strong and put a few more fish in the holds, till then the Q105 crew's
out!!!
Texas 5-Day (8/8/09)
Today was a pick bite at Guadalupe. We pulled the anchor about 5:15 and started to look around. After a little while
we put it back over and started to catch a few tuna. The kite was working well for a few hours today, as most of the
guys that were up on the kite today hooked and landed yellow fin tuna. We have a couple of hot sticks on board. Every
time you saw either of those guys, they were hooked up. Jim Manhattan was on fire today hooking 3 fish before some
guys even had breakfast!! Also pulling on few fish today was one of our loyal passengers, Lloyd Doyle, Lloyd is our
printer and makes up all the Q 105 broacher's that we mail out or you pick up at the office. We had a little wind this
afternoon and scratched for most of it. We are going off shore tomorrow to look for kelps and tunas of any type. More
tomorrow, till then the Q crews out!!!
Texan 5-day (8/7/09)
Good
fishing at the Lupe, that is what we found when we arrived. We started
out trolling and looking around a little. After a couple of drifts for
some tuna, we dropped the anchor. With a good sign of tuna around us we
started to hook a few fish. The size of the fish was around 45 lbs on
average. We did have one fish that will be pushing the
100 lb mark back
at the scale at Pt. Loma Sport fishing. Bob Wagner nabbed the fish, it
was a hard fighting fish but Bob did a fantastic job fighting it. Also
on this trip is Austin Emmerling from Nevada City Ca. Now Austin has a
couple of OLD rods with him. He likes to go to thrift stores, yard sales
or was ever he can find old rods to refinish. He strips them down and
rebuilds them. He used an old bamboo rod that is from the 1930's that he
built. The rod is as nice looking a rod I’ve ever seen!! He said I want
one fish, and then I will retire the rod. Well after a nice
60lb tuna,
he could not put it down. He then landed a 40 + lb yellow on the rod!!!
We had a little flurry of yellows today that will all go at least 35
lbs. These are some hard fighting fish and put your tackle to the test.
For tomorrow, more of the Lupe for us, till then the Q crews out!!!
Texan (5-Day) 08/07/09
We are back out on a 5-day trip. Our first destination is the Lupe. We are hoping for a repeat of the last trip, as it was
a near perfect trip. Yellowfin and yellowtail at the island, then offshore for more of those and some bonus Bluefin!!! The
jackpot fish last trip was around 60 lbs and they were beautiful fat fish. This group is exited to be going to the lupe and
are all rigged up and ready. With a 10 am arrival, we have big plans for tomorrow, till then - the Q 105 crews out!!!!
S
We want to thank Bill Shed, and Mark Slyman from Aftco. The guys look really good.
Any one who doesn't own at least a pair of their shorts, needs to, they are the best for fishing.
They also have a full line clothing and other great fishing stuff

Barnett Family Charter
Qualifier 105 docked under Joe Crisci’s hand at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 4 after the annual five-day Barnett Family Charter. Chuck Barnett is chartermaster of the universe.“We had very good fishing,” remarked Chuck. “We only lost two fish to the white sharks.”Nick Pisciotta of Ojai won first place for a 66.8-pound yellowfin. He said he got that one with a sardine on a 4/0- Mustad hook tied to 40-pound Izorline fluorocarbon leader and 40-pound Izorline on a Penn 500 reel and an unknown rod. Dick Barnett 75 years young won second place for a 63.8-pounder, and Dan Alcaraz of Hacienda Heights got third place for a 60.7-pound yellowfin tuna. This Family has chartered the Q-105 for 20 years.
Thanks to Chuck for all of this hard work, see you at the Fred Hall Show. And a big thanks to all the fishermen that support the Q-105 and Barnett Family. What a great trip
Side Bar: Tanner beat his big brother by .2 lb. He had his personal best YF 60.2 Lb. Not bad for 14 years old. These two brothers put some fish on the boat enough that dad had a great big fillet bill. Way to go you guys.
Barnett Trip (5-Day) 8/4/09
We ended the trip with a bang. Today we wanted to end the trip with Bluefin, and that is what we did!! After stops for
6 to 10 fish most of the morning we spotted a bait ball with fish crashing all around it. We rolled up on the first one and
it was about 60 feet around and as deep as you could see. It had a whale swimming around and through the middle of it
eating what ended up being sardines that were about 3 inches long. Now the fish, the Bluefin and a few Yellowfin were
putting on a show that some guys were filming and not even fishing. They were flying out of this thing making the bait go
airborne. It was something we will remember seeing for a long time. We put together a couple stops for a couple handfuls
each time. We hit 4 or 5 of these things and ended up with around 60 fish for the day. We are now headed for home with
an e.t.a. of 7 am to the dock. We leave again on Thursday for 5 days. The fishing has treated us right the last few trips,
so if you can get away call the office for a last minute trip. Till Thursday the Q crew is out!!!!!
Barnett Trip (5-Day) 8/3/09
We awoke to some choppy seas this morning. With plans to look for kelps and breaking fish it would be tough. After
just a short period of time we found our first kelp of the day. It was holding yellow fin tunas and Yellowtail, and they
wanted to bite. Our anglers put together a very nice day, with yellowtail, Yellowfin, some dodos and even some nice
Bluefin tuna that will be pushing 50 lbs when we hang them on the scales at Pt. Loma Sport fishing on Tuesday morning.
Come down and take a look if you have time!!! With one more day to fish we will be in an area that has a chance to hold
a mix of fish and we plan on putting some of them on board. All on board are having a great time and catching fish so till
tomorrow the Q crews out!!!!
Barnett Trip (5-Day) 8/01/09
A different day at the Lupe, that is what we found today. In the morning, we saw some porpoise first thing and that is
what we saw yesterday. Only thing is today they had no fish with them. We did find some tuna that we got to bite, but
not like the guys that were here the last few days. We scratched together a fair morning and then made a move. We
looked for some yellowtail and found a nice spot that wanted to bite. After everyone landing a few fish, they backed
off. Found one more spot and then it was back to the tuna. We gathered one here and one there the rest of the day,
until.... Zack Plott hooked a fish on 40 lb test that was as mean a fish we've seen in a while. With almost everyone
watching and cheering him on he battled the fish for over an hour!!!! Finally, he beat the 50-lb+ Yellowfin tuna. For
dinner NY steaks and a show from Cal !!!! Cal reached into the milk box and with the boat rocking a little got beat-up
by a couple 1/2 gallons of milk and some sour cream. Travis and Tim were laughing so hard they had tears rolling and
could not even help poor Cal !!!! We now are headed for some albacore and kelp fishing on Sunday. Till then FISH
OR DIE the Q crew!!
Guadalupe Island, what a place to fish! We arrived about 10 am to the north head. The info that we had, told us to try an area that was holding some nice schools of yellow fin tuna. We started to troll the area when Captain Joe saw some fish on the sonar. We stopped and with in seconds we had our first hookups. The fish are a very nice grade, (40 to, so far, 60 lbs). We saw some bigger fish boiling around and hope to hook a few tomorrow. The kite was working well with everyone that had a shot today hooking a fish. Now for the hot stick(s) for the trip: On board with us are Norm Plot and his sons Zack and Tanner. These kids can fish!!! Last year they both had a trip that most would consider a trip of a life time. Not these guys, just another trip hooking fish left and right!!! Both had a few fish, all 40 lbs plus. Good job guys!! Also, a nice fish was hooked by Dick Barnett that was up there with the biggest so far, around 60 lbs, and was a fighter. Dick did a fantastic job and after about 45 minutes, landed the fish on 40 lb test. For those that have fished a Barnett charter, we had a visit from Buford at dinner, what a treat!!! O.k., till tomorrow the Q 105 crews out!!!
Barnett Trip (5-Day) 7/30/09
Hello, we are back on line after a couple of 1.5-day trips. We had good fishing on both and would like to thank
all the new and returning Q 105 fisher people that were with us, good going on your trips!! We departed around
11 am with our longest running charter, the Barnett family with us for 5 days. Chuck Barnett is here for his 20th year
as charter master. We look forward to this trip because it is one of the most fun group to fish with all year. Some of
the kids on this trip are hot sticks and always put as much time at the rail as they can, usually with great results. This
year should be more of the same!!!! With some great weather for a run out to the "lupe" we are planning on getting
these guys into some good yellowtail and Yellowfin action. This is our first trip out to the island this year as we were
waiting for permits that let us fish there. We now have the permit and have high hopes for the trips coming up the rest
of the summer. Wish us luck and keep up to date right here, till tomorrow the Q crew is out!!!!
Monday Night July 27th.
The Qualifier 105 left on the 27th for a 1.5 Day trip.
The fish count is:
55 Yellowtails
4 Albacore
and 1 blue fin
(7/28/09)
Another Great Year. Thanks guys. See you in 2010
1st. Place Jack Lashbrook 39.8 Blue Fin

and limits on Albies over 200. yea Joe
Qualifier 105 returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing July 25 after the annual
five-day LA Rod & Reel Club trip with 13 anglers.“We had good
weather, good fishing and a good grade of fish,” said skipper Joe Crisci.
The albacore were from 22 to 40 pounds and the bluefin from 18 to
50 pounds or so. We had limits of albacore.”
Scott Lashbrook of Upland won the jackpot for a 39.8-pound bluefin.
He said he got it with a sardine on a 3/0 circle hook, 40-pound unknown
line and a rental outfit. He also had an albacore of 39.6 pounds There
were only two places in the jackpot, and Sheldon Fried of Northridge
won second place for a 39.2-pound bluefin. Thanks for the report Bill
Passenger Phil Bell was quoted as saying " This trip was epic"
Day 4 L.A.R.R.C (7/24/09)
Game on!!! The day started before dawn with some of the guys up early fishing the heavy iron. A couple fish then
it was time to get rolling. We trolled for a little while before we got stopped. When we did the fish came up pretty
good, and we had everyone at the rail bit. The guys all worked together great and we had a few good stops today.
With everyone close to limits on the albacore we were happy to find some Yellowfin!! Also we had some nice
Bluefin to go with the albis and yellow fin tuna. With all anglers close to limits of albies we will spend tomorrow
looking for some bigger Bluefin. It looks like this summer is going to be a good one for the off shore fishing. Call the
Q girls now to save your spot!!!!! The Q crews out!!!!!
Day 3 L.A.R.R.C (7/23/09)
This morning was one of those mornings that makes us all love the ocean. Sunny, a slight breeze, and calm seas.
The day was spent trolling and looking for kelps, the guys were all at the rail and ready on our first stop of the day.
With the albies and the Bluefin tuna mixed up together, we never knew what we would pull over the rail. The fish
today were fat, some pushing 40 lbs!! We will be here again tomorrow, the Q crew out!!
Day 2 L.A.R.R.C (7/23/09)
Today we fished off shore for albacore tuna. The day started with a bang, we trolled up a couple fish within
the first 20 mins. After that it was a scratch for the rest of the day. The gang ended up with a few fish for most.
We plan on a short move tonight to an area that had some bigger fish today for our code boats. Cross your fingers
for us!! The Q crew is out!!
Day 1 L.A.R.R.C (7/20/09)
We departed today after a few days at the dock. This is our annual Los Angeles Rod and Reel club 5-day trip.
On board are some guys that have fished the Q105 for many years. Dan Felger, charter master for a lot of the
years past is on the boat as well as our good friend Al Scow. The charter master this year is Dave Levinson,
making this his 2nd year as such. We have only one fisherman with us that has not fished the Q before. We
will be looking for some long fin tunas tomorrow. A few of the guys will try to set new club records for light
line this trip. We will let you know how that goes. So till tomorrow the Q 105 crew out!

7-Day/Cowboy/Tuna Round-Up
Day 5 /7-day Cowboy/Tuna
Round-up
The best bite ever!!
That is how some of our anglers described
today. We had some wide-open yellowtail fishing today for a few
hours. Everyone on board had near limits. The fish were all a nice
grade and we tagged a few big ones. A fish that stands out was the
one that Dave (Boss) Hoag hooked on a fly lined sardine. The big
fish gave him a heck of a fight and should go around 45 lbs. It took
a few spots of trying before we found a stack of fish that wanted to
bite. When we did it was a crazy here on the Q, with almost all
anglers hooked up at once. With a nice load of fish on board, we
pointed the boat north to look for some tunas the next couple of
days. We heard that the albies bit a little today and are going to
try our luck. Till tomorrow the Q 105 crew is out!!!!
Day 4 /7-day Cowboy/Tuna
Round-up
After a nice calm night on the anchor we awoke to nice weather and
some kick a@# biscuits and gravy. We put the kites up and started to
pick at a few fish. They were around but did not want to bite! We
gave it a while then went to look around a little bit. After a tour
of the stones, we set up on a different spot then we were this
morning. It didn’t take long for the kite to produce. With a handful
of kite fish and a few yellows on the dropper loop we decided it was
time to split. We are headed to the beach in search of a little
better fishing. We will be there first light tomorrow. Jim Dekay
would like to tell the guys back in Idaho "hello and you should be
here." Maybe next time!!??? See ya tomorrow, the Q crew out!!!
Day 3 /7-day Cowboy/Tuna Round-up
We arrived at the rocks a little after noon and got the anchor down. With good life around the boat, we all were sure
they would bite well. They didn’t, we did get a few fish and a couple of nice ones but not the number of fish we had
hoped for. Pete Wilson was the hot stick of the day with a fish we think is around 70 lbs. He hooked it on 30-pound
test and did a great job on the fish. We had a few nighttime yellowtails also for the few guys that stayed up. We will be
here again tomorrow so cross your fingers for us. We have good weather and we are all eating like kings, thanks to
Chris and Cappy. Till tomorrow the Q crew out!!!!
Day 2 /7-day Cowboy/Tuna Round-up
We spent the day headed south with the trolling jigs in the water. With the water conditions on our side, we had hopes
of albies. After a couple hours of trolling, we had a jig strike, wrong fish, a bonito. We let the fish go and took off. The
water turned green and cooled and we finished the day with miles under our belt but no fish in the holds. Now on these
trips to the stones we are trolling on the way down but in all reality we are making tracks!! The water was good and you
never know what you might come across. When we arrive at the rocks this afternoon the kites are ready to go and so
are all our angler. We also made nicknames for our guys. We have, Boss, Hoss, Ty, Murf, Klondike, Cap, Snow, Cal,
the Duch, Cabo, and of course Cowboy!!! With plans of bloody decks and bloody boots we will update you tomorrow,
the Q 105 crew out!!!!!
Day 1 /7-day Cowboy/Tuna Round-up
Today
we departed on, Cowboys 7-day tuna roundup. Cowboy (Gary Vander Lyke
Sr.) has fished the Q for years, and is a great charter master. He
is also one of the nicest guys you could want to fish with, glad to
have him on board! After a few days off we are headed south with
plans to mirror the last 2 trips. We spent the day getting all on
board rigged up and ready to fish for some long fin tuna on Sunday
as we point the 105 to points further south. We can only hope the
fishing is as good as the last month of our fishing trips. We will
let you know how we are doing so keep visiting us here for updates.
If you would like to have a great time, meet some great people from
all over the U.S. and put a few fillets in your freezer call the Q

Glenn’s Tackle Charter Gets ‘Em
Skipper Joe Crisci brought Qualifier 105 home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing June 27 after a seven-day trip with 32 anglers. Bobby Gowin of Glenn’s Tackle in Costa Mesa was the chartermaster.
"We had good people, and they worked their butts off," said Bobby to dock reporter Bill Roecker. "We hit the upper Ridge and really knocked the yellowtail. They averaged 25 pounds, but there were many that were larger."
Crisci agreed. "It was scratchy at The Rocks," he said. "We only stayed there one day. But fishing was great on The Ridge. The water’s 63.5 to 64.5 degrees there."
Many of the best fish at Alijos came on the kite. Since there was a complete rotation, kite-caught fish were allowed in the jackpot.
The best tuna weighed 100.2 pounds, caught by George Morales of Corona. He said he bagged it in 20 minutes on the boat’s kite rig after it engulfed a "double trouble" sardine setup.
Ron Reid of Lakewood won second place for an 86.4-pound tuna, and Bill Cook won third place for his 66.8-pounder on 30-pound line.
Dale Pike of San Diego caught a 44-pound yellowtail on a blue and white Salas 7X and 40-pound line. He took his 16-year-old son Alex along. It was the boy’s first long range trip. Alex nabbed a 38-pound yellowtail, and posed with his proud dad.
Where Do The Fish Go?
Talking with old-time skipper Steve Loomis June 27 about the movements of calico bass and white seabass produced some interesting information about fishing for calicos in water as deep as 57 fathoms, and how white seabass can come through an area big and thick at night, while the place is devoid of fish in the daytime.
"It’s a good thing the ocean is such a mystery," noted Loomis, "or there wouldn’t be anything left."
2010 is already getting full

Day 5+6 - Alijos Rock/Glenns
Wednesday started with a bang. We had yellowtail fishing as good as it gets. Everyone on the boat had all they wanted.
Some guys were at limits and were helping the others score their limits. The hot shot today was Alex Pike with a couple
of fish that were about 50 lbs. What a trip for his first long-range trip, I bet dad is going to be getting some more tackle
to add to his (and Alexs) collection.
Thursday we wanted to look at an area that has not had a lot of
traffic this season. We found good water and some life around. We
scored a few Yellowfin tuna on the troll, but not much on the baits.
A few hours later, we found kelp that was loaded with yellowtail,
and willing to bite. We ended up with a nice score of fish to 40lbs
off kelp. We made a couple of drifts and split. We are now headed
north for our last morning of fishing with Saturday our day back
into San Diego. Till tomorrow the Q crew is out!!!!!Day 4 - Alijos Rocks/Glenns
This morning was started off early with guys fishing before the sun started to rise. The early bird gets the worm they say,
so with those guys fishing and some having a serving of homemade biscuits and gravy we started our day. Right away,
we started to hook a few fish. With us on their first long range trip are John Hilton and his son, Taylor. They are here
with Chuck Hereon who is a past Q 105 fisherman. These guys came all the way from Redford Va. and are having a
great time. They are learning a lot from the "pros" and have hooked their fair share of fish, good going guys!!
Also
on his first trip is 16 years old Alex Pike who is here with his dad
Dale. Today he hooked his first Yellowtail and the fish will be
pushing 50 lbs when we weigh it back in San Diego. Also today, he
had his first kite fish with a very nice Yellowfin tuna. He is
pretty happy as his dad has made a little bet with him. If Alex
catches more fish then dad, he will get to go to a big soccer match
that he wants to go to later this summer. With Barcelona of Spain
coming over for some exhibition games, he should have a great
summer. We fished until about 1pm and are now on course for a spot a
little closer to the beach, with yellowtail in mind we are going to
be there at first light so wish us luck. Till then the Q crew is
out!!!!!Day 3 - Alijos Rocks/Glenns
We arrived at the rocks about 10 am with high hopes. After a little tour of the area, we dropped the hook and had a
good sign of both tuna and Yellowtail. We started to hook fish right away, with fly lined baits, dropper loop and of
course the kite all working well. The kite produced on every ones turn today, but the catch of the day goes to George
Morales with a 100 lb tuna that we put on the boat after a very good fight by both the fish and George!!
The guys that won the custom rods the other day all using these beautiful rods to boat fish today, thanks Bobby from
Glenn's Tackle in Costa Mesa. With great expectations for tomorrow we will be spending the night right here on the
anchor, so till then the Q crew is out!!
Day 1+2 - Alijos Rocks/Glenns
Saturday was a busy day for us. We arrived at Pt Loma Sport fishing at 6:30 am and unloaded a very nice load of fish.
Then a little fuel and food on the boat with a new group and we were off. This trip we have Bobby Gowin from Glenn's
Tackle in Costa Mesa on board and he had some nice stuff for everyone. The big winners won a custom wrapped rod
made by Bobby himself. John Stone and John Hilton were the winners; with both winning, a rod valued at over $275,
thanks Bobby. As far as fishing, we trolled a little on Sunday on our way down to the stones and didn’t have a lot of luck. We made sure everyone is rigged up and ready for our arrival on Monday morning. We can only hope for the fish to still be around and willing to bite as good as the last trip. If they are still around, this group is in for a trip of a lifetime. Wish us luck and check back for reports from our trip. The Q crew is out!!

Day 6 A.H.I/ Alijos Rocks
We get there & the normal spots were tied up. Capt. Joe made the rounds, watching the meters & picked
a spot were (normally) no one drops anchor. GREAT!!! We didn't move for the remainder of the trip.
Quality Tuna 35-110 #s, yellowtail averaged 25 #s with several in the 40 # class, one over 50 #
We went through the rotation on the kite 4 times. If you wanted a fish, all you had to do was put time on
the rail. Many of our vetern anglers got personal bests.
Tonight is our awards dinner...
Jim Peeples has won the "Ass of the Day”, cause he really is one (tongue in cheek folks)
Dwayne Randolph receives the "Farmers Award", cause he really can't fish
Crewmember of the Year trophy goes to Tim Walker. Tim was there at all times ...GREAT job!
Biggest Yellowtail trophy Tim Dunn
Biggest Tuna to Rick Goldberg
AHI trophy (Sportsman of the Year) goes to A.H.I. vetern Vance Willer
All said & done a great trip, looking forward to next years trip
On a final note, if you haven't gone out yet, go! The fishing is great, the boat better than ever...a good time
is awaiting all.

Charter masterDay 5 A.H.I/ Alijos Rocks
Lines were in the h2o before the sun was up...fish were on the deck within 30 minutes & didn't stop all day.
Right now, everyone is listening to Bob Segar, coping a great sunset & those who want to, still pulling on fish. Great grade of Yellowfin tuna being brought on, several people have limited out. Even the rookies, who have
never been on a long-range trip are fly lining like pros. There is nothing like a consistent bite to improve one's skills.
Toad yellowtail...all the Yellowfin one could ask for...OUTSTANDING trip... More later, as dinner is now on the table... Dreaming of BIG ones, Dallas Lamb Charter master
Day 4 A.H.I/ Alijos Rocks
Today we lived up to our name & kicked butt down here @ the rocks...we nailed the Yellowfin all
day...a strong steady pick in the 40-65 # class w/ a few bigger fish landed A,H.I rules...the105 is the best. Capt Joe picked the
spot that nobody deemed worthy & we smoked them!!!
Rich Goldberg, an A.H.I from way back landed the Tuna of the day, of the trip so far...a 100-110 # Yellowfin...sweet!!! Tim Dunn, 18, caught his 1st ever fly line yellowtail, a 50 # plus tail...that's right folks, 50 plus pounds. His uncle Bill, who caught
a 300 # Tuna last year, took him on the A.H.I. If U haven't been on a long-range trip yet...do it!!! Fun is not even the right word...
Day 3 A.H.I/ Alijos Rocks
What a day. We arrived at Alijos rocks in the early afternoon and dropped the anchor. After just a few minutes, we hooked
our first tuna. The fish was hooked bye first time long ranger Kendra Moore of Chico. With the boat swinging on the anchor
and a couple of tangles the fish got a little out of control. Kendra did a great job on the fish but the line broke and swam to
freedom. It wasn't long before she hooked another one and put it on the boat a 45lb yellow fin tuna. We had great kite fishing
today with about 20 of our anglers hooking 1 on the kite. Funny story for the day, Jimmy Peoples also from Chico is on board
and was up on the kite. Travis was just getting the kite into position when it got bit. With ever one yelling "the kites bit, the kites
bit" Jimmy was so worked up he ran past Travis and up stairs. He decided to wine the kite in and not the kite fish, and was doing
so like a mad man!!!! It was the funniest thing we have seen so far this season. Fishing was great we ended up with about 50 tuna
and 30 Yellowtail. We will be here again in the morning and hope for a repeat of today, wish us luck. Till tomorrow the Q crew
is out!!!!
Day 1+ 2 A.H.I/ Alijos Rocks
We departed Pt Loma a little after noon yesterday on the 19th A.H.I. trip for 7 days. We spent yesterday prepping gear
with morning albacore in mind. At first light, Capt Joe sent the word to put in the troll jigs. It was only a few minutes and
hook up!!! We hooked a couple of the right kind. We ended up with a few fish and went back to trolling. We saw kelp
a little later and after trip around it with trollers out, we hooked a troll fish, a yellowtail. With a couple of baitfish, we split.
That was about it for the day. We decided to head south a little after lunch.
Tomorrow we are going to be at our destination and we have high hopes for what is awaiting us. Our group is a mix of people from all over the state and a couple guys from Minden Nevada. We also have some first timers on board and are eager to catch them some fish. With high hopes for tomorrow, Capt Joe, Tim, Travis, Jiro, Vince, Oscar, and of course Cappy and Cris are out!!!

Day 7 Fishtrap
Sacramento reef, what a place to fish! We spent the morning there fishing for calico bass. After finding an area that
had big ones we were in hog heaven!! Barry Brighten burg took his guys out and had a couple of fish up to almost
9 lbs!! He had Alex Reentries with him, Alex had a morning that would make any bass fisherman jealous. He had 3 fish
over 8 lbs. He also had a few other fish that were over 5. Allen Fay took his folks to the same area and Larry George
had an 8.25 lb fish, Dave Morgan had a stringer of fish that were all nice big ones. Also with Allen was John Ballotti and
he set another L.A. Rod and Reel club record with a fish on 15 lb line. In Tim's skiff was Jim Edwards, Ray Mailman,
and Eric Parsons. All had some very nice fish but Jim's fishes stood out. He started out with an 8.25 then he got the
fish of the trip, A 10 POUNDED!!! He was tossing a calico colored surface iron in some open pockets and the fish
slammed it close to the boat. Tim and Jim both saw it and at first thought it was a big Bonita, wrong. When the fish was
in the boat the other skiffs heard some hooting and hollering!!!! Barry was in the area and came over for a look and a
few pictures before Jim put the fish back in the water and watched swim away. What an end to a couple of fantastic skiff
trips!!! We will be doing a couple of these trips again next year, sign up now, or for our September trip as the reef will
be a for sure destination. Tomorrow we leave on the 19th annual A.H.I. 7 day with a full load so we will talk to then.
The Q105 crew is out!!!!
Day 6 Fishtrap
We fished at Cedars today, and the morning run was good for some nice bass. The weather was nice and we got to
fish an area that we gave not fished yet this year. On the Q we set up for some yellows and they did not let us down.
We got the skiffs off and pulled the pick, and what do you know some birds started to gather right next to us. The big
ones were around and put on a nice show, blowing out on our chum line. The surface iron was working great with Larry
George landing 2 nice fish in a matter of minutes, both good grade fish. On the drooper loop they also bit, Adam Curtis
was on fire getting 3!! Eric Parsons who is on his first long range trip decided to try the surface iron and was loving it.
After a couple big boils on his jig he nailed it and hooked and landed a nice 28 lb yellow, i think he will be back!! After lunch we moved away down the island for the afternoon. The water was a little cooler than a couple days ago,
and the fish were slow to bite. We scrached at the bass in the skiffs, trying some spots we had yet to fish. Not a lot of
fish today but some quality fish were caught. The big boat set up on a small ridge and the skiffs all made there way over
hoping for some scraps. No love there! We finished up at Cedros and are now headed north for our last day. Wish us
luck, till tomorrow the Q crew is out!!!
Day 5 Fishtrap
We are at Bonitos Island today and the skiffs got'em good. Travis took his guys out to the north of the island and
Alex Rentziperis hooked a nice yellow in the kelp. After a long fight in the kelp, he landed a 35 lb yellow on his bass
gear. Janet Ashikaga has learned how to use the butterfly jig and is having a ball hooking fish in front of all the big tough
fishermen!! Good job Janet. She is getting some nice fish on them. Barry Brightenburg is on board and hooked all on
board up with some nice stuff. Hats, t-shirts, misc. jigs and of course we all got some Fish Trap swim baits. Tomorrow
we have yet to decide were we are fishing, so till then the Q105 crew is out!!!
Day 4 Fishtrap
Today we fished at Cedars Island. We had good fishing from the skiffs and the big boat. The yellows were big but
slow to bite; we picked away and ended up with a nice load of fish. In the skiffs, we had bass fishing that was pretty
good at times. We had a couple 7 pounders and a few 5 's. We made a move south in the skiffs and ran about 7 miles,
boy did we get wet!! We moved to Bonitos Island for tomorrow. For dinner we some fat rib eye steaks and the best
peach cobbler ever!!
Day 2 Fishtrap
With nice weather, we started the fishing off at Sacramento reef. Now if you have never fished there the bass fishing is
one of the best places to calico fish. The fish are huge and there are lots of them. We had a few 8lb plus fish and lots
of 6 and 7's. The average total was about 30 to 50 fish per angler today!!! Janet Ashia had a 7.5, John Ballotti who is
a L.A. rod and real club member set a club record for 6lb test line with a 5 lb 13 oz calico bass, nice!!
We have a few first time skiff fisherman with us. They all found out how fun it can be and all got some nice fish. We
departed about 6 pm and are on course for the south end of Cedars with an e.t.a. of about 6 am. If the fish are cooperative,
we are in for some fantastic fishing. We will let you know how it goes tomorrow.
Day 1 Fishtrap
We arrived at Pt Loma Sport fishing and tied up around 6:15 am. With a very nice load of yellows, everyone was very pleased with their trip. Yesterday we stopped and made a couple halibut drifts. The hot stick was Steve Smith with 3 between 25 and 33 lbs!! He was on fire as the rest of the gang had 3 between them, way to go Steve. We then loaded our Fish Trap 7 day skiff guys on the boat and after loading some bait got underway. Barry Brightenburg is on board from FISHTRAP and within minutes was giving away tons of stuff, swim baits, Shimano Lucanus jigs, t-shirts and lots more thanks Barry!!! If this trips as good as the last one they gang is in for the trip of a life time!! We will be fishing first light tomorrow so till then, Joe, Cal, Tim, Travis, Allen, Jiro and Cappy and Cris are out!!!
Fishing Log for Big Hammer/Skiff Trip
Day 7
Today we started with yellowtail on the big boat. We found a spot of birds with fish on them. And they wanted to bite. At one point, everyone had fish going and it was a little crazy. We let everyone catch a few and went to put the skiffs and kayaks in the water. We started in nice weather and good bass fishing. On the afternoon run, Capt. Joe came on the radio and called the skiffs in to help catch yellows that were putting on a good show at the Q. We raced to get there and when we did it was game on!! We all hooked fish and they were big, all of them going 30 lbs +. We ended the day up with a nice catch and headed north. After a fantastic prime rib dinner and some homemade apple pie everyone was off to get some rest, it is well earned, and much needed after the trip we have had. Tomorrow will bring us some halibut drafts to end the trip. Again thanks to Pete from Big Hammer for the baits that work so well. Till tomorrow Q 105, crew out!!!!p
Day 6
We were in the water by 6 a.m. in the skiffs and the kayaks. Most of the kayak guys went into some thick kelp and had very good calico bass fishing. The fish were big fat fish, a lot over 5 lbs. Cal went to a big boiler rock and also got some big ones. Tim and Allen went into a small bay and had great fishing. They were hitting everything, swim bait, slugs and even spinner baits. The big boat did a tour of the island for a few yellows and also some bass fishing. The wind came up in the afternoon and it got a little snooty. We moved back to the other spot for tomorrow wish us luck. Q105 crew out!!!
Day 5
What a difference a day makes, today we woke up to the same conditions as yesterday but when we started to look around for yellows, nada. Now we did have very good bass fishing in the skiffs but after yesterdays show in the a.m. it was hard to get into bass mode. It was a day we will remember for a long time. Now the big boat did have good yellow fishing, as they were able to go off the island a few miles and found wide-open fishing. We made a move this afternoon to try a new area as the wind came up were we were at. The spot were in now is very good weather wise so tomorrow is looking good. Thanks again to Pete from Big Hammer for all the swim baits, the calicos have chewed up a few but the baits hold up very well, thanks Pete. Till Tomorrow Q105, crew out!!!
Day 4
Well I told you if today was half as good as yesterday, we would be happy. Well we are very happy. This morning we woke to flat calm seas and just a little wind. We all pointed it to a big spot of birds and it was game on!!! Everybody on the skiffs got yellows, big ones. We had a couple of 50 plus pounders!! Pete Wolf of Big Hammer had a 9lb calico bass his best ever!! Then he had a yellow that was also his best ever at 53lbs. Rob Bellini got his first ever white see bass, and he is very happy to say the least. Our kayak people had some wide-open calico fishing for most of the day. Also today two crewmembers also had 50 + lb yellows!!! If you want some FUN fishing, these skiff trips are all about it, not to mention some fish to take home. We will be here again tomorrow, so till then Q105 crew is out.
Day 3
Wow what a day!! When the started to raise we already had the skiffs and kayaks ready, so after a good hot breakfast we were off. First thing this morning the bass were looking for there breakfast and we were there to help. In Tim’s skiff besides alto of big bass a few yellows found us and Tony O'Connell started it off with a nice yellow that got in the kelp quick. After some skiff maneuvering to help free the fish it was landed. A nice 33-pound yellow. Then Doug Frasco hooked a freight train of a fish and after a good fight on bass gear, we released the fish. A very nice morning for all. After a move at lunch, it was a free for all. We had wide-open fishing on the calicos. Then it was yellows, a few big ones. Crewmember Allen Fay had a 55 lb yellowtail after catching and releasing over 100 calicos in the afternoon run. The day ended with the fish popping up right next to Tim’s skiff and a triple hookup. All 3 were landed with Tim then Brad Schnair then Mike Golden all hooked up!! First fish to the boat was Brad then Mike then Tim all 3 landed what a day. We also had some white bass today. If tomorrow is half as good as today, it will be epic!!! Till tomorrow crew of the Q105 out!!!
Day 2
What a morning!! We arrived at Sac reef first light and put the skiffs in the water. We also have a few people with kayaks whom we also got sent off nice and early. The fishing here can be so good with BIG calicos you will have a raw thumb from catching and releasing so many big ones!!! It started with near perfect conditions and the fish corporate; the big fish of the day went to John Turner with a fat 8.6 lb bass. We had many fish that were also 5 to 8 lbs. Afternoon conditions changed and we were blown off the reef with swell and chop, time to head south, till tomorrow the Q105 out!!
Day 1
This morning we left on our annual Big Hammer skiff trip, this year for 8 days. We loaded some sardines and departed about 11 am. These trips are a calico bass angler’s dream. Pete Wolf of Big Hammer is here with giveaways for all. He gave all on board a BIG bag of swim baits and lead heads. As the afternoon passed, everybody prepped gear and told stories from years past. So, with a good group of people on board we head south. Till tomorrow Joe, Cal, Tim, Travis J, Allen, and of course Cris and Cappy out!!

Day 8 Accurate 16 Day Trip Friday April 24, 2009
Today we arose to good weather, but continued poor current conditions. Poor fishing on the anchor first thing this morning prompted us to raise anchor and go on the prowl for wahoo. It did not take too long to get a jig strike and land our first fish. We were able to pick at the fish for the next several hours before putting the anchor back down. Again, the fishing on the anchor proved to be almost non-existent. The tidal conditions here remain poor; we have been fighting that battle since our arrival. Sometime before lunch, we threw up our hands, pulled the anchor and pointed the bow towards the buffer zone with the hope of better things to come. The weather continues to be in our favor but with more cloud cover today, a welcome relief from the sun. The Bank needs a break and a change of tidal conditions; we hope to make our way back for fish ere long. The photo is of Skip Kenison of Palm Dessert who has been fishing the Qualifier since the late 80’s and Travis Laurice a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed crewmember with what will prove to be a delicious dinner in the future. Wish us luck.
Skip and Travis with a wahoo
Day 7 Accurate 16 Day
Our weather continues to be gorgeous. Calm sea, enough breeze to fly a kite, and the enjoyment of time
spent fishing at the rail. Fishing today went as follows. We woke up on the anchor and went with that for a while.
That produced some wahoo. We then picked up and went for a troll. That produced some more wahoo.
After we got tired of that we put the anchor back down and went at it that way. That produced some more
wahoo and tuna. Our day pretty much continued on that way till we put the anchor down one final time and
finished that way with a beautiful sunset. We are sitting tough and going to have a go at it at the Bank,
tomorrow. We are anxious to see this place turn around and have the tuna get with it. Wahoo is what has
kept us at it. Well I'm off to enjoy a beautiful NY steak, a twice-baked potato, and whatever else will be a bonus.
Until then wish us luck. Q crew
Here's Phil with what may be a personal best.
Purple is good! Go Lakers
Day 6 Accurate 16 Day
Let's see. Where do I start? Today was a trying day Not for the
weather be any means, but for the lack of cooperative fish. We did
manage to catch some wahoo and some decent sized tuna, but not in any
large quantities. However, we did enjoy our day very much. Everybody
aboard is a good sport and for the most part understands the necessity
to sit it out and put your time in at the rail. That is truly appreciated.
The weather today is outstanding. Relatively flat seas, slight breeze,
and intermittent periods of sun and clouds.
As I sit here and write this: the sunset is absolutely beautiful,
there is fish on the meter, and I am anticipating a green flash.
We sure are hoping that the weather continues and the fish
want to get with it a little better.
Wish us luck. The QCrew
John Martin got worked by this fish as he hooked it on a 10 footer.
Day 5 Accurate 16 Day
Well...we got to the Bank and got the anchor over the side at approximately 430. This was after we caught some bait and did some looking around the Bank for signs of fish. At just before daylight, the majority of the group got up and started fishing. This effort went on the entire day. For the most part everybody stuck with it and worked as hard as they possibly could to catch the fish we caught today. For our efforts today, we caught some wahoo and Yellowfin tuna. No monsters or anything. Just an enjoyable day at the rail fishing. The weather continues to be outstanding. We were afraid it was going to be a scorcher and then the breeze started and then a nice cloud cover came over. It ended up being ideal conditions all day long. It would have been nice if the fish had shown the same enthusiasm as our anglers did, but we still have time on our side this trip. Till...tomorrow. Wish us luck.
Jack and Alan
Day 4 Accurate 16 Day
Still going. Another lazy day of waking up late and enjoying the beautiful weather.
No much to report here. We are still steaming South with high hopes. We should
get to the Bank in the dark hours of the morning. Otherwise its final preparations
for the
days of fishing to come. Everybody is getting some rest today, as they
want to be awake for our highly anticipated arrival to the Hurricane
Bank. Not much more to say till tomorrow.Day 3 Accurate 16 Day
Today continues the grind to the South. It almost seems as we started our day out where we left off yesterday, but in truth,
we are approximately 250 miles further south and closing on the Bank all the time. The weather continues to be good and if anything getting better.
The little bit of breeze we had this morning has disappeared and the sea is beginning to grease off. For 360 degrees around the boat, you can loose
yourself in thought just looking at the blue sky and undulating seas. No matter how many times you experience the ocean, it always provides new rewards.
As for things on the boat, it was rigging, seminars, and your typical routine travel day headed to the south.
Anticipation is high and we still have some more relaxing to do before we get to the Bank and start fishing. Jack Nielson has actually started a new seminar on the Q105, “Relaxation according to Jack”. We are sure it will sweep the fleet. Keep your fingers crossed for us and all the vessels down here.
Thanks from the crew and anglers of the Qualifier 105.
John after his 100th dunk at Day at the Docks.

Can’t wait to clear Point Loma and head South. The photos that follow are of the best-looking, most talented crew in the History of sport fishing!!! Modest aren’t we? Keep your fingers crossed for us, as given all that, you still need co-operative fish. Some incidental news, John will be in Marina del Rey on Wednesday the 29th of this month for a long range seminar given by the Marina del Rey anglers. Give the office a call for details (619 223 2786) if you would like to attend. Day 2 Accurate 16 Day Hello everybody. We finally get to go fishing, after being down for a couple months for our annual maintenance. Yesterday we loaded up and got underway with our Accurate sponsored 16 day trip. Seems to be an enjoyable group put on this trip with Jack and Birthday Bob aboard After a lengthy stop at the bait receivers, we got underway with a nice load of bait. The weather is a little breezy and we area rolling as we get away from the point. Today, we awoke to calming seas and lessening breeze. As the day went on the breeze freshened up slightly, but it was still an enjoyable day. The was spent doing some rigging, reading, eating, BS'ing, movie watching, and just enjoying the ride as we make our South. I'm sure tomorrow will be more of the same. And we are hoping it gets even nicer. Till then The Q-Crew Out.

As a bonus Gary Teraoka will be teaching his “NUB” connections and offering up long range terminal tackle tips.

re: Qualifier 105
I fish the Qualifier 105 because of the outstanding ride and ease of fighting
big fish, being lower to the water. Also, the $250.00 off on a 5-9 day or
$400.00 certificate on a 10 day or longer makes the Qualifier a great deal. John
has extended the validity of the certificates, but he may be pulling the plug in
April. I have a limited number of them in my store for those that would like to
take advantage of the discount. If you want to patronize your own local store,
call the Q105 office for a list of participating dealers. All that is required
is: Purchase $150 in tackle at a partipating dealer and you will be issued a
discount certificate. Call the Q105 office to book your 2009 trip and the
discount will be applied. Proof of purchase and a signed certificate will be
required.

Net Update January 25, 2009 Giant Tuna On Light Gear
Tim Sanderson of Laytonville wasn’t expecting more than the nice wahoo he caught one day fishing on the Qualifier 105 with Joe Crisci. He put a sardine on his 3/0 forged Mustad hook. His rig sported 60-pound wire, 80-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra backing on a five and a half-foot rod of unknown make. “I had just got a nice wahoo,” he told Bill Roecker at the Pt. Loma Sport fishing scales January 25. “So I put a bait back on my rig and tossed it out there, and bam, I got hit. The first run was straight down, and I thought it felt too heavy for a wahoo. “About an hour later, after a couple of times around the boat, he came up in the middle of the port side! This was the most fun fish I ever got, and the biggest on light line.“I also reeled in a few wahoo heads,” continued Sanderson. “The sharks are showing on the bank." Sanderson won first place for his 266.4-pound Yellowfin tuna. It was the sole cow. Charter masters Martin and Loftus came in second and third, with tuna of 169 and 159 pounds. "We had gorgeous weather,” said skipper Joe Crisci. But the current was wrong most of the time at the Hurricane Bank. We had pretty good wahoo fishing, though. We tried the Buffer Zone and it was good for tuna of 40 to 110 pounds. We got the big fish there in mixed fish, mostly found on bird schools. On the way back we saw a big swordfish and had contact with an albacore.”
Holding his 49.6-pound wahoo, 85 year old Adrian Visser stood in with the skipper and the charter masters for a lineup shot, with his new wahoo clock, for the trip’s best skinny. Not bad for and old dude, he said.
Loftus & Martin 17 Day
1/24/09:
Nothing remedies a couple tough days of fishing like biting fish. We wrapped up the fishing portion of our trip with a solid day of Yellowtail fishing. After checking out a couple different spots we found a nice area of biting yellows that we could drift up. Dropper loops and yo-yo jigs were the most successful methods for targeting the yellows. The Catchy Tackle jigs handed out by Loftus and Martin came in very handy and worked very well in enticing a strike. The fish seemed to come in waves as we would go from one or two going to full speed and then back during our drift. Everyone also enjoyed the opportunity to capture some tasty sheep head that were mixed with the YT's. All in all it was a very enjoyable day of pulling on feisty Yellowtail that surprise some of our new anglers with there strength and stamina. We will spend the remainder of making tracks north. The weather is still grease flat calm as it has been all trip and we have loved every second of it. Once again and big thank you goes out to Loftus and Martin for putting together a great charter. If you like give away, lots of free tackle, great munchies, and even better company the Loftus and Martin charters are for you.

If you have to travel all day you might as well do it in flat calm warm sunny weather like we did today. Travel days are also the days you realize how nice it is to have two excellent chefs in the galley keeping the passengers entertained and very full with their culinary delights. While the passengers dined on a delicious Peruvian steak lunch the crew spent the day looking for anything floating offshore as well as re-rigging any tackle that might need it. We are going to be in the zone tomorrow morning and are very ready to find some biting tuna fish. We will be at it first thing in the morning and will be fishing hard for the next couple days in hopes of getting a hit on the big ones. My lamb chops are ready so we will keep you posted....

1/21/09:
The tuna fish do not seem to want to cooperate in any part of the pacific ocean for us right now. We spent the day scouring the ocean for them but with only limited success. We manages to capture a couple handfuls of 40lbers for our efforts today which isn't what we had in mind in moving up form the hurricane to the lower banks. However if you spend enough time on the water fishing you are going to have a couple tough days and we have had ours lately. On a lighter note the weather has been perfect grease flat calm our entire trip which is, as most of you know, a very nice thing. We are having another fantastic charter with Loftus and Martin as they have put together another charter of great guys. We are having a blast enjoying the weather and the company. We will be fishing hard tomorrow....

1/19/09:
After two days of tough fishing the conditions this morning didn't look good. We trolled all over the bank and managed to catch five nice big wahoo but saw no sign of tuna. After wrestling these toothy critters to the boat we scoured the bank some more for tuna but it was not to be. We have decided to make a move to the north to see if we can be more successful catching the big tuna up there. We will be traveling for a couple days and are hoping the tuna bite when we get there. The weather is still gorgeous and are hoping it stays this way as we travel north. We are making good speed and will be at the lower banks on Wednesday morning.
Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/18/09:
The tuna fish have yet to cooperate with us so far on the bank. We have been throwing every bait in every possible way at them but just can not seem to get them to bite consistently. We have hooked a few heavy fish but on the wrong gear and haven't landed a big one yet. We managed a couple wahoo and a handful of 50-100lb tuna but the volume we were hoping for hasn't been there. Tomorrow is another day and we hope that the fish decide to bite. On a positive note you couldn't ask for better weather. The anglers are enjoying themselves as it is just nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and go relax in the sun soaking a bait. We are planning on giving it our best tomorrow. the crew
Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/17/09:
Tough day on the water as far as catching goes. The day started out right with two nice wahoo coming on the troll and then soon after we anchored a couple nice tuna fish coming over the rail including a nice 100lb. YFT caught be Tammy Holden on a fly lined sardine. Then the day slowed down drastically for us. It wasn't until late afternoon that the fish seemed to show up again. Rail time seemed to be the key for the day with a couple nice fish coming biting late for the persevering angler who spent all day soaking a bait. Charter master Larry Martin landed the big fish of the day taping out at 150lbs. The weather is still very nice it was hot and sunny all day. We will be back at it tomorrow hoping that the bite improves.

Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/16/09:
Today was an expensive day for jig fishermen on the Q105 as packs of biting wahoo ravaged our tackle. It was good wahoo fishing with the occasional tuna coming over the rail. Fishing wahoo all day took its toll on our anglers jig collections but it didn't seem to deter any one from enjoying the sheer chaos of a full speed wahoo stop. Wahoo fishing is some of the most exciting and full contact fishing you can do. Many times today anglers were being towed into one another by angry wahoo. It was all smiles and sore arms by the end of the day. With everyone on board successfully capturing a wahoo we will be shifting our focus to tuna fishing. The weather is perfect but it looks like we might get some rain tonight. We will be on the bank in the morning and are hoping that it bites for us. We will keep you posted. The crew of the Q105.

Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/14/09:
We had more good fishing today. There was alot more tuna around on bird schools and we spent most of the day chasing them all over the ocean. The highlights of the day are chartemaster John Loftus landing a 155 lb YFT on 130lb Maxima line with a 9/0 Eagle Claw hook. Adrian Visser catching both a 100+lb YFT and very nice wahoo on the troll. Charter master Larry Martin not to be out done by his partner also decked a 100+lb tuna fish and Chris Green got in on the action with a 135lb YFT. There was plenty of action on smaller fish and it really seemed to act right late in the afternoon. It was also nice seeing the occasional wahoo mixed in with the tuna. There were times when a wahoo would chew through everybody's heavy setups before finally falling victim to a bomb or jig much to the delight of the re-rigging anglers. The weather is very nice. Warm and sunny seem to be in order with a refreshing breeze blowing steady all day. We are hoping for more of the same tomorrow. the crew of the Q105
Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/13/09:
Our offshore endeavor did not go quite as well as we had hoped, however, it was still fairly successful. After spending the morning searching for a floating wahoo haven we finally stumbled across a nice log off which we wrestled a dozen or so nice wahoo. The wahoo for their effort captured a couple dozen of our jigs and bombs and left a few anglers swearing at them. Soon after we found a spot "blackies" which did not disappoint. We hung four heavies. Two were hooked on wahoo gear and could not be stopped. One was hooked on a Marauder but the hook straightened 20 minutes or so into the fight. However, the birthday boy Tim Sanderson made his hook up count decking the first cow of the trip. He captured the beast on 80lb and probably won't be trying that again. The fish taped out a 240lbs. This was a great first day of fishing and we are hoping for more of the same tomorrow. the crew of the Q1ooooo5
Loftus & Martin 15 Day
1/12/09:
The weather just keeps getting better which is always a good thing. After two solid days of rigging we just had a few loose ends to tie up and everyone should be ready to go. So for the most part everyone spent the day relaxing and wiring up jigs for wahoo fishing. You can never have to many wired jigs with those toothy critters around. Loftus and Martin had there third and final raffle today. Everyone received discount coupons for Jerry Brown line one and other gadgets. The big winners were Chris Green who won a beautiful Diawa rod perfect for fishing wahoo and Tammy Holden who won a custom wrapped tuna rod. With the tackle rigged there were margaritas in the galley and a poker game in full swing. Nothing like enjoying a flat calm day on the water with a frosty margarita in hand. We should be in a pretty fishy water tomorrow and are hoping to find something big and floating holding a bunch of wahoo. Though that is what we hope for pretty much everyday on the water we should be in good position for that hope to become a reality. We will keep you posted the crew of the Q105.

1/11/09:
Our travel day was spiced up today by a bunch of raffles from Loftus and Martin as well as a Friends of Rollo fund raising raffle held by Tom Kelleher. The great part about the Loftus and Martin Raffles is that everybody wins a prize of some sort ranging from tackle and shirts to rods and reels. The big winners so far are Dave Klein winning a 6460 XX custom seeker rod, Wes Cerny and Adrian Visser each won a Diawa Sea Line 40 reel, and Eric Olson won a Diawa tuna rod. In addition to the many raffles and prizes each angler received a Loftus and Martin "goody bag" which includes a couple T-shirts, an assortment of tackle, a lure compliments of Catchy Tackle, and a bunch of different gizmos and gadgets. Charter master John Loftus won the Friends of Rollo raffle which raised over 500$ for the kids. Johns prize was a beautiful custom Seeker rod. Chefs Cappy and Chris wrapped up the day with a delicious tri tip dinner. For desert they surprised everyone with a birthday cake for our two birthday boys Tim Sanderson and crew member Travis "the cheetah" Laurice. The weather has gotten very nice and just keeps getting nicer as we head south. Keep your fingers crossed for us that it holds up. the Q crew

1/10/09:
As we departed Saturday afternoon on our annual Loftus and Martin 15 day excitement was high with the possibility of catching a fish of a lifetime. For those of you who have never gone on a 15 day big f ish adventure the first day is always filled big fish stories and the excitement in the air is unmatched by any other trip. After loading the boat with a gorgeous batch of sardines and we began the long trek south to what will hopefully be a red-hot big fish zone. The ride down has been mellow so far with one rolly patch that lasted about 4 hours. The preparation for catching the fish of a lifetime is key, to actually successfully capturing the beast, the cow the giant yellow fin tuna.. I believe the saying goes "failing to prepare is preparing to fail." We will be spending the days ahead rigging, re-rigging and mapping out a strategy on how best for each individual angler to have a successful opportunity to land that fish of a lifetime. For those salty vets on the boat who have successfully captured a big one in the past they spend the day sharing tips with newcomers and comparing notes with other anglers on methods gear. Though no fishing is done on these what may seem like endless travel days to an antsy angler these days are equally important to the actual fishing days and a lot of very good information can be gleaned from crew and fellow anglers. That is all for today, the crew is off to enjoy some comfort food after listening to the 3rd quarter of the Chargers game.
Loftus & Martin 15 Day 2009
1/10/09:
Hello Q105 friends, we hope everybody had a great holiday season. After some time off for Xmas and the turn of the new year, we are back! We departed Saturday with a full moon on our annual Loftus and Martin 15 day trip. With John Loftus and Larry Martin as charter masters, we headed south. These guys are the best at what they do. With goodies for everybody, including the crew and plenty of line for all to use. They also have a raffle every day with EVERYONE winning a prize! From fillet knives, sleeping bags, spools of line, and of course rod and reels, these guys are very good! We loaded bait in the sun on Saturday and spent Sunday doing chores and building new gaffs with high hopes of using the all. The weather is very nice, For now we are traveling to points way down south. Wish us luck and keep watching the website as we will
up date every day. Satellite permitting.
We are also working hard to improve our fish reports. No Clicking

We leave on Saturday, for a 15 day trip but..
I just figured out how to post this great fish report from a passenger. It deserves to be posted.
Finally Alan. :) Yea
This report is the Boss Hoag/Cowboy/Ahi 10day trip that left in November 2008.
I know it is out dated by now but, I thought everyone would enjoy
reading it. Alan did such a great job.
We really appreciate what you did Alan What a great report
Thanks guys
My annual 10 day long range trip is about a month later than the past trips which if fine since it may give us a better shot at the big boys. Below is a summary of my fighting tools followed by my report summary and lots of photos. Hope you like it. Grab a leftover turkey sandwich and drink and read on…..
My rods are mostly Calstar or Seekers and reels I lean towards Shimano with some Penn’s in the mix. 10 Day trips are especially hard to gear up for since I may need rigs that range from 30-130lb outfits but will probably use 40 and 50 lb rigs the most. My outfits, by line rating, go something like this: 30, 40 x 3, 50 x 3, 60 x 2, 80, 100, and 100 lb for a total of 12 rigs. Rod selection is by model #: 670, 610, 610, 700h, 700h, 6465h, 765l, ml, m, and h, 6463xxxh, and a 9ft jig rod. Reels are Toriums, Trinidads, Tiagras, Penn YTS and 50s 2 speeds. I know that 12 rigs sounds like a lot but its nice to have back up rigs and if you like fishing iron and jigs, these require separate setups, especially for wahoo. If you only fish bait, then you could probably do fine with half as many rigs and the boat has heavier rigs for trolling.
For terminal tackle, hooks, and jigs I probably take way more than I need but now that I have stuff for various types of rigging, why not bring it. The tackle lists provided on the long range websites are adequate for your basic needs and all long range boats have a pretty well stocked tackle stores on board.
For the last couple years, I have been experimenting with different brand and style of hooks. No big ah hah!! moments except I now am a firm believer in ringed hooks. I haven’t quite decided which J hook is my go to hook but I have no complaints with the Mustad 94150, Eagle Claw 118, and VMC Tuna Tamer. For circles, I used both Mustad and Owners. The Owners are a bit easier to pin a bait on but the Mustads are cheaper and work just as well. I’ll probably go with Owners in the future and look for deals at the next Fred Hall show.
