Today great fishing was on the menu for everybody, I don't care who you are, you would want to be here today. We rolled into the fishing grounds at a gentleman's hour (I think it's around 7 or 8 in the morning). After an extremely enjoyable breakfast we went to go check on a little piece of kelp, we were in the market for a little taste of the excellent calico bass fishing that can be had in the long range fishing areas of the beautiful Baja coast. As we did that we managed to hook and land a few beautiful grade yellows. The best part of the day came right around first call for lunch. At that time we were looking for the ever present premium grade of Yellowtail. And we found them. We put together a wonderful middle of the day working away at the 30-40 pound Yellowtail, with a splattering of some calico bass that would make any skiff fisherman happy. Our hot stick of the day was young Charlie Saraspe with 4 big yellow tail,1 around 40 lbs and the other 2 were close to that. We finished off our day in the lee of a great big island capturing something of a different flavor to enjoy for table fare. Alan Riches and Shane Bitler's picture will tell the tail! All in all it was an extremely day. Flip flops and tank tops and biting fish. Until tomorrow. Wish us luck!

PS. We had a raffle and the big winners were; Costa Sunglasses; Mike Corren and Shane Bitler. Also a few rods were given away to; Gary Steiner, Wayne Mills, Mike Williams and Larry Hardesty, they all won Melton Rods. Charlie Saraspe won a Penn Baja Special Reel. Also a few guys won some spectra from Jerry Brown. Our big winner was Eric Plummer, he was the grand prize winner with a brand new Talica reel from Shimano. Thanks to Melton Tackle for bringing all the give-aways and to all our anglers for riding the Q.

Day-2 (8-04-10) Bowden
Around 4 am we stopped on a spot of fish that we were driving over. They swam under the boat for a few minutes then they split. We had about 6 guys up trying for them but no bitters. We started back up and went looking around, it was a tough morning for us but they gang is having a blast. Fred Bowden is fishing aboard the Qualifier 105 for the 21st time. He has a few Friends and college's aboard for the first time and they are loving it. Fred made up his own menu for this trip and chef Cris is pleasing all of us with the food. Today we had some carne asada burritos that were as good as any restaurant. As far as fishing we ended up with only a handful of tunas, 5 yellow fin and 3 albacore. A slow day for our Friends fishing in the same area today with us, we all saw good sign of fish but they were not biting at all. For tomorrow we will be at Cedros for some yanking and cranking as we will be fishing Yellowtail and it has been good for weeks. We do not have a picture today, we were all waiting for a good hit for some pics but that never happened and before we knew it, it was dark. We will have some tomorrow for sure. So until tomorrow the Q crew's out!!

Day-1 (7/25/10) LARRC
Today we start our annual LARRC five day fishing trip. On board are twenty-four very excited anglers, we have a few newcomers with us this year and they can't wait to get a chance to pull on some fish. This is one of our favorite trips of the season, it is always a lot of fun. LARRC is a great fishing club, they do many great things to promote the sport as well as lots of charitable activities that bring many kids and grown ups in contact with the fishing experience, that otherwise would probably never get that chance. So hats off to LARRC for being there to all those lives they have touched. Well we are going to start our trip offshore with hopes that the fish gods will smile on us, as we try to find some of those elusive Albacore. The weather looks like it should be good for a few days. So when everybody gets up in the morning we will start our day trolling and looking and we all have a good feeling that tomorrow will be a good fishing day. Wish us luck.

Today brought us another day of nice weather. We had a big breakfast of chicken fried steak and eggs and it was awesome. Our first anglers up on deck found that schools of small fish were around us and couples were tagged but most were tossed back to grow up. Charter master Dale Myer had a good fish this morning after a tough day yesterday. Farther and son, Brian and Alex Zufelt are on board for their first long range trip and are loving it. Both landed tuna today and then in the late morning, they both hooked up at the same time. The fish Alex had was a feisty one, it ran under the boat and wrapped on the rudder or prop. We were able to push the line off with our "Y" and both of them landed their fish at the same time, it will be good on the BBQ when they get home. Joshua Bowman had a good fish today after a long battle, as did Dennis Baxter whom landed a few today. We had a fish that will be over 100 lbs also; Ross Roberts hooked a good one he fought for about an hour and a half on forty-pound line. Our kite rotation went through the whole group and most landed a nice tuna thanks to that method. After noon the fish backed off and we pulled anchor and trolled up a few more wahoo with a triple jig strike being the highlight of the day. We are headed north to fish for Yellowtail tomorrow. Our load of fish is already looking good and we plan on getting some yellows to go with the tuna. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!!
We pulled into the rocks around 8:30 am today and we started to troll around for a while. We put some wahoo type jigs behind the boat and started looking around at the high spots. The wahoo were not around in any big numbers but we landed 1 while we were looking for a spot to tuna fish, a nice little bonus. We then got the anchor over and started fishing. First time long-range fishermen Brian Zufelt and his son Alex are with us and had a blast today. Alex hooked and landed his first ever-saltwater fish, a beautiful 40 lb wahoo on straight mono today. In addition, our buddy Dan Durbin is here and had a wahoo on mono to go with a few nice tuna today. Hot stick today was Jon Koregelos, he hooked 8 nice tuna, landing 6 and handing a couple off to other anglers. Our big fish today was Jordie Hibner, here with dad Tom, Landing a fish around 80 lbs, she did a fantastic job with this fish. Dad Tom had one at the same time and they were happy to land both for some nice photos and some tuna steaks for the freezer. Josh and Neal Bowman are back and did well today as did father and son duo, Fernando and Daniel Perez. " Buzz " Stryker is back and tagged a few fish as did, Dennis Baxter, James Houston, Gene Blazick, Tony Koregelos and our buddy Dale (" dropper loop") Myer. Not much in the way of the big yellows today, we are in deeper water then you usually catch them here but the tuna made up for that as we had Good action all day long. Our camera did not make it this trip so we will post some pictures when we get back. Our weather is very nice, warm with a breeze to fly the kites and over cast sky's, perfect for fishing all day. We will try for a repeat tomorrow here at the rocks, so till then the Q crew's out!!!
Not much to report today, we spent the day headed south in great weather. We rigged up all our gear today and made sure all our anglers are ready to fish first thing tomorrow morning. Our destination is Alijos rocks. We have a report that the fishing has been good down there. Wish us luck, until tomorrow the Q crew's out!!!!

Day-8/Nevada Gang (7/17/10)
We fished our last day off shore. We only had about half a day to fish and we did well. It was still early when we found our first spot. It was albicore and they bit well, we had 4 to 8 fish per stop for the morning and called it a trip. We had our Qualifier 105 turkey dinner. We have a turkey for each table and the crew all cut one for each table. Happy birthday to Kenny! He had a great trip and will be back with us again soon. We will be in early tomorrow and will be turning around on a 7-day trip, till then the Q crew's out!!!!
Day-7/Nevada Gang (7/16/10)
We left Cedros last night and headed north with tuna in mind. This morning we awoke to a clear sky and light wind. It didn't take long for us to find some fish. It was what we hoped for, albacore. They were the big fat ones and bit well all morning. We made some stops and then they quit biting as fast as they started, it was like a light switch, up and boiling around the boat and then just like that they were all down deep. We looked around for some time and then we made a move and found some more fish after a couple hour run. It was a huge spot of mixed fish, mostly albacore but some blue fin were mixed in also. They were chasing bait balls and it was quit a sight. We made a few drifts and had good fishing for the rest of the day. A couple of times today we saw some of the bigger blue fin some looked to be around a hundred of so pounds. The gang wants to stay here and try for a few more in the morning before we call it a trip and head for home. Let you know what happens tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Cliffton and Oscar!!!
Day-6/Nevada Gang (7/16/10)
Today we made a move over to Cesters rock for some bass fishing from the skiffs and yellows from the big boat. The weather was nice but the fish did not cooperate. Their use to be a lot of kelp in the area but now it has all disappeared. The locals fish and dive the area and the kelp is gone!! We fished a rock that was loaded with kelp in the past and now is bald. In the skiffs, we had a few yellows that were released due to their size, small, and some barracuda, bonito, and a few bass. After a run, that all agreed was not worth another one we split. We went back over to Cedros and drifted for yellows. Even that was slow, a couple of other boats that were there had some fish in the morning but we were a little late. The afternoon was tough for all of use as we drifted around near the other boats and we all had a tough time of it. A couple of the fish we did capture today were, Wayne (Coop) Cooper with a nice yellow he had and Kenny Shoning with a calico that was bleeding and will be taken back to Nevada to be dipped into some beer batter and dropped in some hot oil. On these trips, we release all calicos that we can, but every now and then one is not going to make it so we will keep them. It is very good table fare and Kenny was more then happy to bag one. Our group has voted to go off shore tomorrow for some tuna's and we will report then, the Q crew's out!!!
Donald Coop with his yellow! Kenny Shoning with his calico!
Day-5/Nevada Gang (7/14/10)
We had another day of great bass fishing from the skiffs today. In the morning, we headed over to Benitos Island for some kelp bass fishing. We were not disappointed with what we found. The fishing on the first run was very good with the skiffs landing and releasing 50 or so fish each. We did lunch on the anchor and then swapped out skiff teams and did an afternoon run. The current died during lunch and the fishing slowed. We still managed to land some nice fish. The big boat did a tour of the island and found some yellows, not any big hits just few here and there. We are headed to a new spot for tomorrow and are not sure what to expect. We will let you know how it goes. The Q crew's out!!!
Day-4/Nevada Gang (7/13/10)
With lots of time left to fish, we have already had a great trip. This morning we decided to try
for some school size yellows from the big boat. The fish here at the island are around in some
big schools and are eager to eat. We ended up before lunch with just under a 100 fish. Most
had at least 4 or 5 yellows. It was fun fishing with the drooper loop and yo-yo jigs working the
best. After a lunch of beef stir-fry, we headed up to the north end for a couple of skiff runs.
After we got the skiffs in the water we headed into the kelp. It was weird, the kelp that
always has a lot of bass had very few. We found out why very soon, they were under some
birds out on the edge of the kelp chasing krill. We pulled up and could not believe what we
saw, calico bass, most between 6 and 10 lbs cruising around with open mouths eating the
krill. The area was about 100 yards around and at some times you could see a dozen or more
fish in a small hole in the kelp. Problem here is the krill, they can swim around with open
mouths and eat the krill and their for would not touch any thing else. We managed a few,
all-big ones, with Diane Snyder landing a huge one around 7 lbs!! In addition, Kenny Shoning
had a couple nice one's and had a couple big ones yesterday. We will be here for more of
this tomorrow and will report then. The Q crew's out!!
P.S. pics of Cliff Kemp and Linda Kemp are included.
Cliff Kemp Linda Kemp
Day-3/Nevada Gang (7/12/10)
Our weather today was a little better then yesterday morning. We put the skiffs in the water after a breakfast of biscuits and gravy with eggs. Then it was bass fishing in the kelp. Our first runs were good fishing with most catching their first ever calico bass. Then the wind pushed us south as the kelp on the north end was picking up. As we moved south, fishing calico's on boiler rocks was all right but not like the kelp fishing up at the north end. Joe put the big Q on a spot of yellows and we headed that way. It was good fishing on 20 to 25 lb yellows in the skiffs and for those lucky enough to have done a skiff run with yellows biting will tell you it is as fun fishing their is. All aboard the skiffs had a chance to pull on a fish or two. On the big boat the fishing was also very good, a couple of bigger 40 lb + yellows were landed and a picture of Jason Lepore is proof. With him is our new " kid " Aliyar. For those with a trip planned with us this season with us, fishing has been good all season so far and we hope for more. Also a little about the "kid", Aliyar, he is just out of high school and wants to be a long range deck hand, so far, he has impressed all aboard. He is very polite and will work his butt off all day and night for the passengers, doing what ever it takes to keep us all safe and happy, we are glad to have him. He turned 18 on the last trip and a little whip cream to the face was his " present". After a baseball cut steak for dinner, all will sleep well tonight. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Jason LePore and Aliyar with a 40 lb yellowtail!
Day-2/Nevada Gang (7/11/10)
Well, we had a change of plans today. We arrived at Sac reef in the early morning with hopes of some bass fishing. The weather had other plans for us. It was windy with a swell that was just at the borderline of what we can launch the skiffs in. We made a couple of rock cod drifts to see if the wind would back off, no such luck. So now what, let's go off shore fishing for tuna’s!! We had a couple of hours until the water was right, at that point our ladies on board showed the guys what was up. Sandy Conner, and Connie Stafford were the first to land fish, albacore tuna for both. It was then a scratch bite for most of the day. Our hot stick of the day was Linda Kemp with a couple of nice fish, a big fatso Albie and a blue fin, both around 40 + lbs!! Also having a couple of nice fish was Diane Snyder. The ladies were on fire today landing fish on every stop. A picture of Sandy Conner with a nice Albie is our picture today. We will be at Cedros for some skiff fishing tomorrow and will report then, the Q crew's out!!!
Sandy Conner with a nice Albie!
Day-1/Nevada Gang (7/10/10)
Off we go for another skiff trip. This one is a charter of folks from Nevada. Some anglers are
from Vegas, Reno, Ely, Pahrump, and McGill. It should be a fun trip; this group gets together
all sorts of activities together. We left the bait receiver and cleared buoy #5 around 2pm.
Good weather, good bait and a load of cold beer!!! We will be trying our luck at
Sacramento reef tomorrow, given good weather. Until then, the Q crew's out!!! Wish us
luck!!!

Day-5/Baja Fish Gear(7-Day Trip)
As good as it gets today. With our arrival timed for sunrise, we rolled into Cedros just as the sun was rising with a beautiful morning ahead of us. We looked around for an hour or so before we found some willing fish. It started out full speed with almost everyone hooked up at once. The spots of fish were impressive. Some were big, as big as the boat and then some. We spent most of the day fishing them and ended up with most of our anglers tagging as many as they needed. We are going to look off shore tomorrow for some more tuna's. Our picture today is Sonja Vanderveen and Debra Nowlin with a couple of the fish they landed today, both are doing great this trip and have had plenty of fish already with a couple more days to fish. We will let you know what happens, the Q crew's out!!!
Sonja Vanderveen and Debra Nowlin with a couple of the fish they landed today!!!
Day-4/Baja Fish Gear(7-Day Trip)
We had a very good day tuna fishing today. We found big spots of fish up feeding for most of the day today. A couple of stops for a box or two of fish and a good amount of fish ended up being tagged. We had a rod go over the side today and our own "Cabo Jonnie" was over the side and under the water before any body else could do any thing. He got it!! It had a fish still on the other end, we got the fish and jonnie got a bunch of pats on the back. Matt Groff of Baja Fish Gear had a drawing today for a rod and reel and a bunch of other swag. I will find out who won and let you know later. We are going to fish for some yellow tail tomorrow at Cedros. We have good weather and Chef Cris is not letting any one go hungry that’s for sure. Our picture today is Ross Yasukochi with a nice blue fin, one of many he landed today. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Ross Yasukochi with a nice blue fin, one of many he landed today!
Day-2/Baja Fish Gear(7-Day Trip)
We awoke to great weather and sign of fish around us this morning. It was not long before we stopped on a spot of blue fin that were up chasing small baitfish. They wanted to eat and we ended up with most of our anglers catching a few fish with a couple of hot sticks. Ross Yasukochi and Steve Brandon were hot; the setups were simple, 25 # test line, long rod and a short piece of fluorocarbon with a small 2/0 hook!!! Both hooked and landed a limit for the day. We had good fishing most of the day; most stops were good with a couple better then others. For the day, we had a nice load of fish tagged and put into the R.S.W. today. We are staying put and trying this area again tomorrow, we will let you know. Our picture today is Joe Dorando with a nice blue fin tuna. Till tomorrow, the Q crews out!!
Joe Dorando with a nice blue fin tuna!!!
Day-1/Baja Fish Gear(7-Day Trip)
Happy 4th of July!! We departed Saturday afternoon for 7 days; our charter is from Baja Fish Gear. Matt Groff is on board as charter master. After baiting up and having some lunch, we got everyone into the galley for our welcome aboard seminar. After that, Matt had a giveaway for all kinds of good stuff. All the anglers received goodie bags and t- shirts. We spent Sunday looking around in an area that had some bluefin around. We scratched for some fish but not what we had hoped for. Our weather is very nice and we have high hopes for the rest of the trip. We will let you know what happens on Monday, wish us luck, the Q crews out for now!!
Happy 4th of July from the "Q" family to yours
be safe have fun go fish.

Day-6/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Keeper Dave here with the fishin' and photos from day five on the Qualifier 105.
We started the day at Cedros Island but didn't have
much luck so JK decided to move over to Benitos
Island. The pickings there were better but still spotty.
Some stops produced only a few biters and some were
quite productive for beautiful yellowtail around 25
pounds. The sea lions made catching tough at times
and heavy line, tight drags and hard cranking were
key to putting the fish on the deck. Despite the
challenging conditions, everyone put at least a few
fish in the hold.
Lunch was platters of the finest, freshest hamashi to be
had anywhere and dinner was prime rib, twice baked
potatoes and grilled asparagus prepared by chefs
Chris and his trusty sidekick Johnny and eaten in an
atmosphere of camaraderie and good humor.
Tomorrow we'll be heading north for home. We're hoping for a few goood stops to finish off
the trip on a high note. Honey, make room in the freezer, It's been a good trip.
John K’s PS
My first trip
back in awhile and it has been a tough one. We have basically been in the
ballpark, but not been hitting the ball when it comes to having good
fishing. Frustrating when your in the right place but can’t seem to
connect. The folks on board have been great and the crew has worked hard
for the anglers and me. The boat has run well Joe has been keeping the rig
in great shape; Chef Chris has been #1 in the culinary department I am
looking forward to my next trip. See you at the dock.
Day-5/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Keeper Dave also known as the Q 105 scribe for the week here. Last night we traveled north
to the area around Cedros Island. We were rewarded with a very nice early yellowtail bite
with everyone on board getting a shot at a fish in the 15-20 pound range. After that, it was
stop and go on varied sign for a few fish at each stop. Mid afternoon, the wind kicked up
with a vengeance and that kicked the catching up a notch. We made two very good
stops with yellowtail for all, including the first ever-unassisted solo yellowtail for eight-year-old
T.J. Ponder. He used a blue and silver surface iron suggested by jack-of-all-trades Chef Chris.
Catching this big yellowtail is truly a team effort with all on board working like the Dickens to
ensure that every fish hooked makes it on to the deck, followed by much backslapping and
high fives. It's a great atmosphere here aboard the "Q." JK decided to check out Augustine
Bay at dark and couple of 30/35 lb. Yellows hit before dinner. One was caught by 83 years
young Ron Gerstenberg. We are planning to be here in the mourning and look around for
more Yellowtail. Check in tomorrow!
Dinner started with a Greek Salad followed by a Rack of Lamb, Greek style peas (Yummy)
and orzo pilaf with fresh baked Rosemary Bread. Oreo Fudge Black Cake with a cream
cheese frosting that was so rich. Life is good. Till tomorrow!!!
Here's a picture of LeAnne!!!
Day-4/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Day three was, for the most part, a hunting expedition. John decided that the going to the
Rocks wasn't worth the time spent running versus fishing time that we can enjoy on a seven-
day trip fishing for Albacore, Bluefin and Yellowtail. We spent the day looking and stopping
on meter time marks and top water signal. Every stop produced a few very nice albacore or
bluefin. One spot in particular was good for a good number of 30lb. grade tuna. One late
stop was big on quality but small on quantity as Qualifier 105 veterans Ron Gerstenberg and
Mike Dunning each landed beautiful bluefin in the 50lb class. Ron got his fish on an ancient
Penn 500 reel, which had been used by his father many years ago. His fish took him around
the boat three times but 73-year-old Ron won in the end.
The highlight of my day (other than a couple of very nice bluefin) was an opportunity to
spend some time with deckhand Oscar up in the "tuna tower." It's an amazing view from
there. You can see the ocean for many miles and see tuna boiling on the surface a mile
away. Just one of many attributes that make the Q a mean fishing machine.
Tonight we dined on gourmet chicken, sweet mashed potatoes and beans, prepared to perfection by chefs Chris and Johnny. Tomorrow we'll be fishing for yellowtail at Ceros Island.
Day-3/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Dave Smith a Q105 angler this trip (Zoo Keeper on the boards) here. I have been given the
guest writer job aboard the Mighty Q105. I am sitting in the wheelhouse with John K and I
have been picking his brain regarding his thoughts about tomorrow and the trip to date.
We’re south of Guadalupe Island and have had a good number of tuna stops so far but
none that have produced big numbers of fish. JK calls it a pick and scratch. With this
seven-day trip JK believes that time spent fishing here will be more productive than time
running to fish Alijos with three other boats. We are hoping for a little help from lady luck to
provide a more productive day tomorrow, we’ll stay here and hope for better counts. There
are definitely plenty of fish here we just need to hit a school that wants to bite. Keep your
fingers crossed for us.
Ummmmm Sue's Blue Berry Jam good. Thank you..
The story of the day is all about eight year old T.J. Ponder. He landed his personal best
Albacore, a 27 pounder, with no more help than a seasoned long ranger would have
needed. His Dad is so proud and with good reason. TJ is a good young man and the gang,
crew and anglers alike are all stoked they are aboard. Here is a photo of TJ.
Turkey soup, Char Grilled Pork Chops with a mango chutney sauce, wild rice & mixed
vegetables for dinner with a crunchy upside down pineapple cake for desert. Oh I forgot
the fresh baked Cranberry bread. Just roughing it on the Q.
PS Tomorrow JK says that if the weather is still good that I am going to ride the Mast. He
wants me to give anglers perspective of what it is like to be the “Eyes in the Sky” See you
tomorrow.
The Keeper
John Klein and TJ Ponder
Day-2/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Mostly a travel day but when we started fishing in earnest we made the most of it. A great
mixed bag of albacore, yellowfin tuna and bluefin tuna. Notable were D.J. Waters with two
albies, one bluefin and one yellowfin, Leann Dunning with two very nice grade albies and
Dave Smith with a big ol’ bluefin (clean out the freezer LB).
As always, we were treated to incredible meals. Baseball cut top sirloin last night for dinner
and Chef Chris’ mouth-watering lasagna tonight.
Really a family feeling on the boat. Everyone smiling, backslapping and joking. “That Guy”
missed the boat this time.
Conditions here are good for a great day of fishing tomorrow on day three. We’ll be up early to get a good start to the day.
Day-1/Cowboy/Hoag/Cobb (7-day trip)
Well we are on our way after a delay at the dock due to Murphy’s Law. A leaky showerhead and a routine change of a faucet cartridge ended up with a broken pipe behind the shower wall and a bit of a delay. Patched our pipe up, loaded bait (beautiful Sardines) and cleared the Point by 1500 hours. Safety seminar delivered and dinner is in the works. Only thing left is to eat and sleep for this departure day. Lots of old friends and family aboard on the Qualifier for this trip. The Edison Boy standards are aboard plus we are delighted to have aboard Hugh Cobb from Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle in Oceanside joining the group. Hugh is a great addition to the trip roster. Keep your fingers crossed for us late tomorrow.
..•.¸¸•´¯`•.¸¸.•°o.O(7-Day/Glenn's Tackle-6/19-6/26)O.o°•..•.¸¸•´¯`•.¸¸.
Day-4/Glenn’s Tackle (7-day trip)
Well the day started out almost the same way yesterday ended, with not much catching going on. We pulled the anchored shortly after daylight and began to look around with hopes of locating some tuna, we had no luck. So we decided to go and look at Alijos bank so off we went. On arriving at the bank we shortly came to the conclusion that we were not going to find any of those beautiful fish that we were catching last trip. We gave it real good look before we decided to leave the rocks and start heading up. It was apparent that we were not going to catch a bunch of fish there so we are heading for greener pastures. Tomorrow we will be starting out around Hipolito Bay, we are going to be there first thing in the morning. We hope it will be a better day than today, check with us later.
Day-3/Glenn’s Tackle (7-day trip)
Well, we started our day about forty miles above the rocks, heading down with anticipation of tuna and yellowtail boiling and jumping around the boat. As we got closer we hear on the radio the other boats that were at the rocks talking, and it sounded like they were not too happy with the conditions they were dealing with. Well as we all know, things can change in a hurry sometimes out here so we were not too concerned about it too much. Our last trip down here the current didn't start running till an hour or two after sunup. Well when we arrived, things had not changed yet, so we took a good look around and got the anchor down and started fishing. Conditions were real tough, the wind was blowing pretty well and there was no current so we were swinging quite a bit. As the day went on things didn't change so as you can imagine it was a tough day of catching, but we made the best of it anyways. We were able to put some very nice yellowtail on the boat and everybody had at least a couple opportunities. The wind started to subside towards dark so we are keeping our fingers crossed that we will wake up to nice weather and fish jumping around the boat, we’ll see, wish us luck.
Day-2/Glenn’s Tackle (7-day trip)
Well today, we traveled for the most part. We didn't put the trolling lures in until afternoon because we just were not seeing the right conditions as well as temp and color of the water. We saw a little bit of bluefin swimming right next to the boat so we spun around and gave it a try but as bluefin sometimes can be, they were not interested. We never saw anything else the rest of the day. The weather has not been all that good so it might have something to do with the fact that the fish are just down right now. We will be arriving at the rocks in the morning, and all on board will be up early doing their final preparations for what we hope will be a day full of action. We will have a full report tomorrow check back then.
Day-1/Glenn’s Tackle (7-day trip)
We pulled away from the dock right about noon to begin our 7-day's of fishing fun and adventure. Our first stop, the bait docks. The bait that we have been getting the last couple of months has been some of the best bait ever, and it seemed like that trend is continuing on, what a beautiful load of sardines we put on today. So off we go, looks like the weather came down a bit from last night so it should be a good ride down. Once we finished with the tackle and fishing seminars, Bobby Gowin from Glenn’s Tackle handed out a full bag of fishing goodies to everyone. Then we had a drawing for a custom wrapped rod. We finished of the day with another fantastic dinner prepared by Chef Chris and everybody went to bed happy and stuffed. We will be dragging some jigs around tomorrow hoping to find some tuna or the elusive long finned devils. Wish us luck, check with us later to see if we do.

for lots of blue fin today, and we found ‘em. Problem was they did not want
to bite!! We found a good temp break around noon and stopped on a sonar spot
for a couple fish. Then a little while later we had a giant school of fish
under and all around the boat but like blue fin can do on a regular basis,
they would not bite. We did hook some fish but for the amount of fish that
was under us, it was frustrating. We had 30 fathoms of fish under us for a
3-mile drift and only hooked a little over a dozen fish. We are hoping for
some albies tomorrow to end the trips fishing. Also tomorrow,
Dallas will
be doing our report with a trip summary, till then the Q
crews out!!Day-5/AHI 20th Anniversary
We had hopes for a repeat of yesterday and we were not disappointed. It started in the gray
with a few tuna biting. A couple of bigger fish up to around 115 lbs were landed, Tony
Belandres. Gary Thomas, and Cris Cattell all had nice one's. We made a move mid morning
to a little shallower water to try for some more Yellowtail. It did not take long for them to get
on us and we had a few of the bigger models that are here at the stones. We also had the
best tuna bite of the trip; we ended up with limits of yellow fin for the guys. Hot stick of the
day was Vance Willer, he was hooking and handing fish to who ever would take the rod from
him. We think he handed off around 30 fish today. At one point, all his rods were bendo at
once!! In addition, Otaway Thomas was pulling on a fish almost all day, as he hooked one
after another, not a bad trip for him or his brother Gary. Today’s pink hat wearer was Darryl
Despie as you can see in the picture. The other picture is " Cabo" Jonny gaffing a yellow for
Darren " DJ " Holmes. We are done at the stones and headed north around 5 pm and will be
finishing up the fishing tomorrow as we will try for some more off shore tunas. Dinner tonight
was Cris's ribs and they did not disappoint anyone!!! Everyone went to bed with sore arms
and full bellies. We will report tomorrow, the Q crews out!!

Day-4/AHI 20th Anniversary
Another day on the Q105, music playing strong, fish hitting the deck on a consistent basis,
sun breaking through...what I have come to expect to be the norm for the A.H.I....today
was not a disappointment...as I am inputting this the 100th tuna of the day is being tugged
on...quality fish many in the 80-100 class. When you look at the sonar, the amount of fish is
amazing...for those of you (Robert you are one) who decided not to come ...wrong move,
this trip, the 20th A.H.I. will go down in the books even if the fish stopped biting as a classic!
Today, for lunch we had some wonderful blue fin tuna steaks (we caught it the 1st day out)
One of the finest meals that I have had in years...the cooks on this boat have done nothing
but get better each year...makes all of us a**holes really happy.
Another way of saying it...we slayed them today!
Lynn, hope you are reading this, Chris is kicking ass!
The bite was so fine, that tomorrow we will stay here, hopefully for more of the same..
For those that really want, not just a fishing trip, but a lot of fun with as fine a group of
fisherman as one can find call the Q105 office today for next years trip, as we will sell out
early..
As for this year, eat your hearts out cause we are kicking ass on the 20th Asshole
International Fishing Classis...

Day-3/AHI 20th Anniversary
We had a great day here on the big Q. We started fishing about 1 pm when we arrived at the rocks. It was not long before the tuna got on us and wanted to bite. Otaway Thomas or O.T. was the first to land a nice tuna. He is on this trip with his brother Gary from Florida. They both had a great day landing several tuna each. O.T. started the day with the first fish and Gary landed the last of the day just before dinner. We had a couple of better fish to around 65 lbs on the kite and they bit the double trouble setup pretty well. Ed Kerst had a nice fish around 65 and Cowboy landed a handful of fish today. We had a couple farmer awards at dinner and Dallas will do our next report and drop some names. We are staying here tonight to get a morning shot at some more tuna. We also landed a handful of yellows today and hope to see a few more of the big ones tomorrow. Heartbreak today, Cris Perez had a fish on light line that he tugged on for around 2 hours before pulling the hook. We think the fish was tail wrapped or side hooked, he did land a few and was not upset about losing the fish since he was on the light line and knows you are taking a risk at hooking a better fish when fishing the light stuff. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!!
Day-2/AHI 20th Anniversary
After some last minute gear rigging this morning, we had lunch then started to look over the area we were in. It was a little while before we found some fish. It was just a few fish on the sonar. A little bait over the side and they bit good. Most of the fish were blue fin with some albie's mixed in. We had 2 stops for the day and most of the guys ended with 2 to 5 fish each. Not bad for a few hours fishing. We cut the day short to head south to Alijos rocks to try for some of the bigger yellow fin tuna and yellowtail that can be there thick this time of year. Chris Cattel had his first ever tuna today and is with us for the first time. Some guys on this trip have fished the Qualifier 105 many times, Darryle Despie, John Dixon, Lee Fonseca, Rick Goldgerg, Roger Holmes, Dallas Lamb, Tom Marquez, Tim Sisk, Alan and Dave Springer, Cowboy, Vance Willer and Joe Chinovsky are a few of the guys. These are all good fishermen and we want to get them on some fish. Our newer guys are also pretty good from what we saw today and we have high hope for tomorrow. Today’s picture is Tim with Cowboy and a nice blue fin tuna. Check out our new crew shirts!! (thanks Mimi!) We will report tomorrow from the rocks, happy Monday, the Q crew.
Tim with Cowboy and a nice blue fin tuna
Day-1/AHI 20th Anniversary
We departed today with Dallas Lamb as charter master for the 20th anniversary of the A.H.I. trip. If you don't know what A.H.I. stands for, use your imagination. We also have Gary Vander Lyke on board. These guys started this trip years ago and now they both have their own trips, cowboy has 2 trips this year with a 7 and 10 day. We are always glad to see him fishing with us on his trip or the A.H.I. Dallas puts a lot of time and energy into making these trips special. He brings trophies, awards, and the pink hat (the pink hat?). Every night at dinner, he awards the pink hat to the A- hole of the day to wear the next day while fishing. A lot of jokes come out of this and ever one has a good time with the tradition. Dallas will do a report in a couple days and will let you know who won the hat and awards and why. We are going to do some off shore fishing tomorrow and will let you know how we do. Our bait looks very good and we hope for a good day like last trip on some bluefin and or albicore. Until tomorrow the Q crew, (Capt Joe, Tim, Jiro, Oscar, Cabo Jonny, and chefs Cris and Cappy) are out!!

Barry and John "Hobie" Yakker Morgan
Rap up Report by Bill Roecher
Qualifier 105, skippered by Joe Crisci on Barry Brightenburg’s annual Fish Trap expedition, returned from a week at sea with 22 anglers and a mixed load of inshore and offshore fish.
“It was my first time on a skiff trip,” said John Christianson, one of the owners of Pt. Loma Seafood and regular fisherman. “I had a blast! We were supposed to be bass fishing.
“We fished on day at Sacramento Reef in flat calm weather, and caught calico bass up to seven pounds. I did well with a new Shimano jig called a Wax Wing, on bass tackle with 65-pound Spectra, in eight to 10 feet of water. It was spectacular!
Then we went tuna fishing, after the skipper heard they were banging the fish outside. We found the bluefin and got about a hundred of them, and then got into a real ripper of an albacore bite, the kind where they’ll bite sardines on a gaff.
Then we went back in to Cedros Island for some good yellowtail fishing. That’s where Cappy got his big grouper.”
There was no jackpot on the trip. Morgan Promnitz and a few other Hobie Kayakers came on the trip and scored well from the big boat and from their Hobies inshore. Morgan posed with a good yellow and a bluefin in the 50-pound class. He had two of those.
The trip’s big fish was a broomtail grouper caught by the 105’s chef, Michael “Cappy” Capucetti. It was at first thought to be a world record. On the certified scales it came in at 101.4 pounds, short of the world mark of 114 pounds; a fish caught in 2007 by Mark C. Yang, aboard the Shogun. He was fishing for yellowtail at Cedros with 30-pound fluorocarbon. Chef Cappy got this one the same way, but with 50-pound line.
Capucetti got his broomtail on a sardine and a 3.0 ringed Mutu hook, on straight 50-pound Big Game line. He used an old Penn 113 H reel and a Calstar 760 rod.
“I was fishing for halibut,” said Michael, “when he bit, around 3:30 PM. I was on him for a half-hour and we had to chase him to the hole he got stuck in. Am I going to eat him? Hell yeah!”
Broomtail grouper used to be caught in San Diego, but it has been many years since the last one was reported. Grouper in general are released by long range anglers, since the Mexican government has requested those and other big bottomfish be left for indigenous fishermen.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Day 3/Fishtrap-7 days
Wow, what a great day we have had! It was a couple of hours after sunrise when we found
our first school of the day…straight Blue Fin Tuna. We stopped the Q105 on a sonar mark,
immediately hooking the boat with Blue Fin. We were extremely busy, full speed, fun fishing.
Our first stop was good sign, a nice school of fish, but as the day went on we saw huge spots
of fish and biting fish to boot. It wasn't long before we had to fire up a well for frozen fish; our
fresh well was filling fast. The guys have had an excellent day of tuna fishing. Albacore were
mixed in good numbers and we had Blue Fin in the 50 lb range on a couple of stops. Today’s
picture is a few of the guys with some of those 50 lb fish. For all the anglers catching tuna on
a skiff trip was a big bonus! Most of the day was spent angling. Only for short periods would
we be looking around before another school was located. Wide open on the corner a
couple times and we were able to fish heavy gear; John Cristianson of Point Loma Seafood’s
landed 5 or 6 fish in a matter of minutes. The guys all helped each other catch fish. One of
the great things about long-range fishing is anglers helping other anglers. Kombiya!!! It was
as good of tuna fishing that most of the anglers on board have ever seen! What a day,
what a trip. A day catching and releasing big Calico's at Sacramento Reef, then a day of
putting the wood to the tuna. Tomorrow, Tuesday we will be back at Cedros Island for a
shot at those big yellows. Wish us luck.
The other picture today is our crew member Jiro, keeping us all entertained paddling one of the Hobie pro staff/film crew kayaks, as you can see the boat is about 12 feet up in the air in our rack!! We were all in tears laughing at him. As you may or may not know the Q105 is about having fun while you catch a bunch of fish. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!

The guys with some Blue fin Jiro with a Kayak...RUN!!!
Day 2/Fishtrap-7 days
It was a "basstastic" day on the Q 105. We started our skiff fishing today at Sac Reef. The weather was about as nice as you could ask for, light wind and overcast to keep us from overheating in the sun. It was not wide-open bassing but it was steady, and the fish, well nothing under 3 lbs was the norm. A lot of fish landed in the 5 to 7 lb range and few over 8 lbs. Skiff driver Tim had one at 8.5 in the kelp, and we have a couple kayak guys with us, Jared Lane, Morgan Promnizt and their cameraman Jeff Fortuna are here making a video for Hobbie. These guys are great fisherman and they had a blast. They were able to get up next to the reef and had 3 fish over 8 lbs!! Barry Brightenburg spent the day in the skiff and we ALL used his swim baits today. The fish were very hungry for the swim baits, any color seemed to be working as the fish are up in kelp and react when they see one going by. Barry also is representing Shimano and has some demo gear that a few of the guys are using to fish for the bass. As far as tomorrow, a bonus for the skiff trip. We are going to spend a day off shore looking for Albacore and Blue fin tuna. The gang wants to go out and spend a day tagging some fish. The last few days a few of our long range Friends have been doing well so we are going to try it. We will let you know what happens, till tomorrow the Q crew's out!!!
Day 1/Fishtrap-7 days
We departed today for some more skiff fishing with Barry Brightenburg of Fishtrap. We are hoping for a repeat of the last trip. We will let you know what happens at Sac reef tomorrow. The water was a little cold last trip but when we came past yesterday, it was 7 degrees warmer then just a few days ago, and that is a good sign for bass fishing. Till tomorrow, the Q crews out!!

Day-8/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8 day
We ended our trip up with a few rock cod drifts today. The big reds bit and so did a few lings; a couple of them were around 15 lbs. Most of the guys kept a couple to take home for tacos and beer batter nuggets. The trip over all was a success with the gang all catching a lot of big bass and some brute yellows also. The skiffs are about as fun of fishing I can think of. Seeing a 5 lb bass come out of the kelp to nibble on your swimbait never gets old. Their are guys on this trip who have landed hundreds of bass and still get excited and yell hookup every time they hook one! And as far as the 35 lb + yellows in the skiffs, all I can say is it's battle, and when 2 or 3 are going at the same time, well come see for your self some time. We will be in Saturday for a turn around and 7 more days with the skiffs. Until then the Q crew's out!!

Day-7/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8 day
Well it was not
like a few days ago at the big island. The yellows were no shows and the
bass, a little slow today. After a scratch morning, we headed to the north
end. We had some lunch and put the skiffs in the water. They all headed to
the kelp at the very tip of the north end. The bass were hungry and bit very
good. On the big boat, Joe went to look for some trophies and found them,
with a little help. Scott McKay called
on the radio and was on a big yellow in his kayak at the same spot we dumped
the skiffs. We went back and dropped the anchor. By then,
Scott had 2 of the
big fish in his kayak. It did not take long for the big ones to
get on us and put on quite a show. A big spot popped up and we hooked a few,
all of them over 30 lbs!!
Greg Braun was first on bait. Then
Rick Lyse hooked a nice one,
even Jiro hooked one!
Ron Hasson landed one and Capt. Joe also.
The skiff trips are so much fun and easy going, and the bass fishing in the
kelps out of a skiff is as fun as it gets. We had prime rib dinner and will
be doing some rock cod drifts tomorrow to end the trip. Our next trip is
also a skiff trip and after that some 7-day trips, we have some room on
those trips and have heard of some blue fin and Albie's around. Get signed
up now. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!Day-6/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8 day
Today we spent
our morning at Benitos. The bass fishing
there can be some of the best there is. The Kayak guys went into the weeds
and picked at some nice big calico bass. The skiffs went around to the north
side and the fishing was slow. We finally found some fish on the boiler
rocks. The fish at Benitos are all nice ones. Our picture for today is
Dean Hepp and
Joshua Gerson with a couple of boiler
rockfish landed and released in the skiff. We headed back to
Cedros for the afternoon and set up on the south end of the island. The
kayaks had good fishing up in the kelp. The skiffs ran around looking for
yellows to no avail. A fantastic dinner of shrimp scampi and a nice flat
night for some rest will be nice. We will report tomorrow from Cedros, till
then, the Q crew's out!!Dean Hepp and Joshua Gerson with a couple of boiler rockfish landed and released in the skiff.
Day-5/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8 day
Another great day here on the Q. We were able to fish the "weather side" of Cedros today. It was a nice change, the weather was fantastic and the fishing was as well. First thing, the bass were all over anything thrown at them. They had probably never seen a boat or any kind of artificial baits so they were easy to catch. Lots of big fish also, a 5 lb bass was common today. No yellows today but the bait in the water would indicate some yellows around soon. We will be over at Benitos tomorrow and that can be an awesome place. There is a small fishing village on the island and we are spending the night in calm water there. We had some rib eye steaks for dinner with twice baked potatoes that were about as good as it gets! Our pictures today are the kayak gang, Scott Mckay, Dave Klein, Bob Falkenberg, Kenny Andorfer, and Mike Sapp after the afternoon run waiting to be picked up. Scott and Bob said "the funnest fishing EVER out in the kayak’s" and both these guys have done a ton of kayak fishing so that will tell you something. Also a picture of Joshua Gerson with a 5 lb bass, one of many he landed today. As far as the fish go, all the bass are released unharmed to be hooked another day. Until tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Joshua Gerson with a 5 lb bass!! Kayak Gang: Scott, Dave, Bob, Kenny and Mike
Day-4/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8 day
Sorry about no report yesterday, I was busy catching bass with a couple of the guys last night. They were biting in 120 feet of water until about 1am. it was a blast. As far as fishing, it was just what we had hoped for. We started at the south end of Cedros with good weather and birds flying around up in the bay we were in. It didn't take long for the first fish to be hooked. We hooked yellows up to 47lbs in the skiffs. The guys on the kayaks whacked the bass. The yellows were in shallow chasing small baitfish and were willing to play for about 3 hours. Fighting these things in the skiffs is about as fun as it gets, one fish going one way and another on someone else line going the other. Sometimes the skiffs just spin in circles around with a fish pulling you. In the afternoon, we moved to the lee to avoid the wind that had picked up. We found some yellows around there as well, all big ones. As far as standouts, Our own Alan Faye was with Rick Lyse and Tyler Barnes for the afternoon and they had limits of yellows in the skiffs! For Monday, we moved to the north end for some kelp calico fishing. That worked out nice as the bass up in the kelp can also be pretty fun. I think most of the guys had around 10 to 25 big bass for the morning run. The late morning guys did about the same. The kayaks did well also; they were even catching them on jerk baits. A nice bonus for today was Allan and Tyler again, both catching white sea bass up to almost 30 lbs. They were nice enough to donate them for dinner and chef Chris made it happen for all. Thanks guys. We are around on the "weather side" tonight in flat calm water and are hoping to skiff fish in some kelp tomorrow that is in an area that as far as we all know has never had any fishing done from the skiffs. A couple pics for today, one is Mike Golden with a nice 5.5 lb bass, and one of the boat as we pulled in for lunch (notice the weather!). Until tomorrow, the Q crews out!!

Day-2/Big Hammer Swimbaits-8day
The weather was good but the water was not so good. We pulled into Sac Reef about 6:30
am and put the anchor over. The wind was light and the swell was also, but the water is
cold, about 53 degrees. As some of you bass guys know they are a little slow at that temp.
We did manage to land a few. All the guys got a skiff run and the kayaks were out all
morning. Most of the guys in the skiffs ended up with 3 to 5 calicos each, and the kayak guys
had from 5 to 15 each. The fish were all nice ones, about 2.5 lbs to 6 lbs. We pulled anchor
around 2 pm and headed south. We will be at Cedros in the morning and have plans to pull
on so many bass your thumb will be raw from all of the ass released. A picture for today is
Rick Lyse with a bass around 3 lbs he landed with a Big Hammer Swimbait (thanks Pete!).
We will report again tomorrow, until then the Q crews out!!!
Rick Lyse with a nice bass!!!
Day-1/Big Hammer-8-Day trip
Good morning, it's Saturday and we are just about to Sacramento reef. We are hoping to get the skiffs in the water for a couple of runs this morning. We departed San Diego about 1 pm yesterday with our skiffs and a few kayaks also. The gang is ready for some big calico bass and hopefully a few yellows also. These trips are about as fun as it gets. The bass can be fast and furious. Fishing from the skiffs, we are always keeping an eye open for any birds or fish we see and will b-line it to get to them before they go down. Last year on this trip we had some Yellowtail fishing that was about as good as it gets. We have a few guys on board that were reading our reports last year and that is why they are here. For the guys that were here last year but could not make it I'm sure they are bummed. One of the guys was Rob Belloni who has a web site, Calfishing.com. It's a great site for all your California fishing info, take a look. Maybe we will see you next year. Also Our sponsor for this trip BIG HAMMER Swim Baits owner Pete Wolfe could not make it, he has made this trip for many years and is busy with work. Thanks for sending your guy Brian Kettler to hook all our anglers up with your great swim baits. All the gang got goodie bags and spent the day yesterday rigging them up. If this trip is half as good as last year, we are going to have a great time. We will take and send some pictures so come back and check it out. The Q crew, Joe, Tim, Travis, Jiro, Oscar, Allan, Chris and Cabo Johnnie are out until tomorrow!

Day Three-I.S.W.A.C/3-Day trip
ood morning, well our day started out all right. The stink-sticks gave the anglers a little excitement
as we chased down bird schools and "pushers" of yellowtail. Hopefully we can get a few to stick
on the hooks and stay around the boat for a while......as a matter of fact as I sit and type this out I
heard another "hookup!!!!" We will keep ya posted on how the day turns out for us.
Day Two-I.S.W.A.C/3-Day trip
Well we woke up to some pretty snotty weather just north of San Martin Island. The water is pretty
cold and off-color with the wind blowing quite stiff out of the northwest. We made a couple drifts
on the outside and scratched up a few reds and lings, then made our way inside and tried some
drifts for some 'Butts, but the given water conditions made fishing pretty tough. So we made our
north way towards some hard bottom spots known for kicking out some quality reds at times. Joe
put us on top of the fish and some anglers did pretty well if they toughed out at the rail. The
weather is supposed to kick up overnight as we make our way up to the Coronado and give it
another shot at the yellows that have been popping up and chewing in the morning. Looking
forward to our Tri-tip dinner tonight........
Day
One-I.S.W.A.C/3-Day trip
Hello there folks, the boys from the Qualifier coming at ya with a report for
the 3-day ISWCA trip. We left the bait receiver with some good looking bait as
we headed out to South Coronado Island to try and pick up some yellows on our
way down to points south. We stopped on a few spots loaded with birds, but to no
avail. We all enjoyed a dinner of cornish game hens, wild rice pilaf, and some
mixed veggies prepared with love by Chef Chris and Cappy. We are going to be
headed south tonight and see where we wind up with the given weather.

Trip Rap up report by Roecker
Bill Roecker for FishingVideos.com
& the San Diego Sportfishing Council
May 14, 2010
A Little Luck Couldn’t Hurt
The first time Tom Burke went fishing on a long range boat he won the jackpot for a bluefin. The Buffalo, New Yorker came back this year on the Qualifier’s annual Accurate trip hoping to get a 100-pounder. His luck was still good, and Burke came up with a 291.2-pound yellowfin to win the jackpot. Not to say the fish didn’t have a chance. It got its money’s worth out of Burke by beating him up for two and a half hours. Then Tom had to sweat getting it through the sharks, which he did.
The trip spent about three days each at the Hurricane Bank and offshore at Clarion Island. The bank provided a good catch of wahoo. More wahoo and the bulk of the big tuna came from Clarion’s Buffer Zone. There were 19 anglers on the 16-day trip skippered by Joe Crisci and led by Jack Nilsen and Gary Gillingham of Accurate. They ended up with ten cows and two tuna that weighed in at around 199 and a half pounds.
“We had a good ride down,” said Gillingham, “and good fishing for three days at the bank and again at Clarion. Eight of our anglers had a personal best.”
Burke’s first-place fish certainly qualified as a best. He said he got it with a sardine on a 5/0 VMC hook tied to 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod.
Pete Corselli of La Habra won second place for his best tuna ever, a 269.2-pounder.
“He went around the boat three times, with his sickle out of the water and everybody on the boat hollering about it,” said Corselli, “and I thought, ‘I’m never gonna get this fish. When I finally pulled him over to the boat we gaffed in midship on the starboard side.”
Corselli and several of the other anglers aboard the trip are featured in the just-finished video, “Hurricane ‘Hoos,” coming in a week or two from FishingVideos.com. He told dock reporter Bill Roecker that this fish bit on a sardine pinned to a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook on 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.
Regular long ranger Allen Lemberg of San Diego had some pretty fair luck himself, winning third place for the best one of his three cows. The fish weighed 262, 253 and 248.4 pounds. The best one was only two pounds short of his personal mark, he noted. Allen said he lost two other big fish, one of which was bigger than the three he put on the boat. It was lost when he straightened a hook, he said.
Allen got his fish on sardines and 5/0 VMC hooks, he said. He used 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on the late Dr. Bob Fechner’s Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Seeker 6465 XXH rod.
Paul “Scooter” Silverman of Windsor, CO wasn’t in the jackpot. He got a 274.2-pounder with a sardine on a 7/0 Mutu ringed hook on 130-pound blue Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra. He fished with the late Del Marsh’s Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Baja Boomer rod.
“That one took me around the boat five times,” said Scooter. “I got him after an hour.”
Keng Chee Jin of Singapore bagged a 237.8-pound tuna with a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He used 130-pound line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate ATD 50 reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod to get his fish in 45 minutes.
Pin Yam Ng of Malaysia was a hot stick, said the other anglers. He got a 226 and a 233-pound tuna, with sardines on 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He fished with 130-pound Jin Kai line, 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 770 H rod.
Chartermaster Gary Gillingham of Duarte spent a tough hour on a 223-pound tuna.
“He came up with his sickle out of the water for about ten minutes of that time,” he said.
Gillingham fished a sardine on a 6/0 Offshore hook tied to 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He said he used An Accurate ATD 30 reel and a Calstar 770 XXXH rod.
Singapore Fishing Outfitter Alvin Lim was aboard, with a group of five other anglers. They posed with one of the two cows caught by Ng.
Older Than Wiesenhutter’s Record
Most long rangers know that the oldest IGFA world record for yellowfin tuna is also for the biggest one: Kurt Wiesenhutter’s 388-pound, 12-ounce supercow caught way back in April of 1977. But for age, that one doesn’t hold a candle to the oldest record of all, for a yellow perch, of all things! That record is held for a four-pound, three-ouncer caught in 1865 by Dr. C. Abbot in Bordentown, NJ.

Accurate 16 -Day/ Ride/Fly Day 14
We rolled into
Cabo just in time for a beautiful sunrise. Cabo is a great place with
A LOT of new hotels. The place looks
different each time we go. All went well there with the Mexican agent coming
out and greeting the gang getting of the boat, then after a little paper
work off they all went in a water taxi. We then
departed around 7:30 am for San Diego.
Our plan is to check into customs around 8 Thursday
morning and as soon as that's taken care of head for home. We
have a nice load of fish on the boat, the next couple days we will do an
overview of the whole trip, so until then, the Q crew's out!!!!Accurate 16 -Day/ Ride/Fly Day 13
We ended our
fishing today. The morning was dead calm, no wind, no swell, sunny and warm.
Some porpoise were swimming around slowly and we had hopes of big tuna's. A
few small tuna were around but not what we hoped for. The birds were working
the area also and it looked fishy. After hitting 3 or 4 spots for nothing,
we called it a trip and headed for Cabo. The trip overall was a success with
all catching a nice lineup of fish. We have 8 or 9 personal best fish. The
scale at Pt. Loma Sport Fishing will let us know on Thursday. The Singapore
group is departing in Cabo and flying to Las Vegas for a couple of days
before meeting us in San Diego on Thursday. A fun way to end a long journey,
a few days in S.D., a couple weeks on the Q and then some sin city fun
ending up meeting the boat to get their fish back in San Diego, sounds like
a trip of a lifetime for most!!! It will be hard tomorrow, pulling into Cabo
but not setting foot on the beach and watching the gang take off in a pangas
on their way to their hotels or flights. A couple days in Cabo is always
nice and maybe someday John will let us have a little R and R ourselves!!!
Anyway, we will be in there early and I will include a picture of Cabo
tomorrow, till then the Q crew's out!!!!!!
Accurate 16 -Day/ Ride/Fly Day 12
Just a travel
day today, most spent the day watching movies or getting their gear in order
after yesterday. We made way towards the cape today and will finish our
fishing tomorrow. Joe with the gang from Singapore is the picture today. The
fish was landed by Pin Ng who is an outstanding fisherman. He pulled on this
one with No help the whole fight, for a small man he pulls hard and his
technique is perfect. We will post again tomorrow, till then the Q crew's
out!!!!
Accurate 16 -Day/ Ride/Fly Day 11
Stacked up like cordwood, that’s how we found the wahoo this morning. We pulled the anchor around 5:30 am and started looking for birds. We found a big spot of them crashing on bait balls and the tuna were right there with them. At first, the biggies big one's were jumping out of the water chasing small bait fish; we stopped and hooked a bunch of medium size fish. We landed about a dozen or so before they moved on. A picture of some of the gang is included. After that, we wanted to try for some wahoo, with the trolling jigs out and every one standing-by things happened fast. We found an area that was loaded with fish and we put about 75 of them into the holds!! Skip Kenison is walking around with a huge smile after landing 4 in just 2 stops this morning. He loves wahoo and is happy to have a bunch to take home to eat. I forgot to mention a big fish yesterday, Pete Corselli, long time Qualifier 105 fisherman landed a possible personal best with a tuna around 275 lbs. This guy is a great fisherman and has helped some of the newer guys with suggestions regarding their gear. His freezer will be full with a few big tuna and a pile of Wahoo’s. Last night after dinner, we had a bunch of Jack’s swimming around the boat. A couple of the Singapore group put on some poppers and we had a blast. The fish were about 12 to 20 lbs and they put up a great fight. We released them all afterwards. Sometimes, fishing is just about having fun. Tomorrow we will be fishing a new area with a Monday morning arrival into Cabo San Lucas to drop of about half our group. We will update then, the Q crews out!!!
Accurate 16 -Day/ Ride/Fly Day 10
Great weather, great food, great company, and even better fishing !!!!!.
We had another great day here on the Qualifier 105. We did basically the same
as yesterday, trolled up wahoo first thing while we were looking around for tuna,
then we found em. Some of the big fish today were: Allen Lemberg had a fish that
could be his personal best at around 270, he has a great trip going with 5 or so
big tuna's and plenty of other "smaller" fish. Lou Lacouette had one that taped at
216 lbs and he is on his first long range trip !! He has a few other fish over 100 lbs
also, nice trip for Lou and I'm sure not his last,(trip,or fish). Winner of a new
Accurate reel today was Keng Chee Jin with the first fish on the deck over 200 lbs,
also one of a few fish he's landed. Yesterday's reel winner was Pin Yam Ng, today he
landed several nice fish, included is a picture of one of them, Pin is on the right
Seng Ko lim (Alvin) is on the left lending a hand. We had one big heartbreak today
with Dave Klein hooking one that required a backup rod to be attached to his, something
gave and we lost the fish, it was a big, big one. Dave has a few good one's with one
that will probable go 200 lbs, another great trip for Dave. Just about all our anglers
had good fish today and tomorrow we will be here again, so until then, the Q crew's out!!!!!
Alvin and Pin Oscar
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 9
Another fantastic day on the Qualifier 105. It started about 1 hour after sunrise and lasted all
day!!! We pulled the anchor were we spent a great night, and started to troll around. A
couple of fish were up and chasing some sort of baitfish just out in front of the boat so we
stopped. It didn’t take long before a few heavies were hooked. The first few fish seemed to
be BIG as our anglers were all fishing heavy tackle and having a tough time slowing these
monsters down. One angler who did a great job from start to finish with NO help needed in
any way from the crew was Pin Yam Ng. He landed one that taped around 265, and then
the next to hit the deck was Allen Lemberg with a fish right at 200 lbs. The next was Scooter
Silverman with another 265!!! All 3 are something to be proud of and their true weights won't
be known until we reach San Diego next week. A little comedy today up on the bow, we are
lucky to have 2 chefs that can and will work on deck if we need them. Today Cappy was up
on the bow with an angler who needed to get around the anchor. This can be tricky, you lie
on the winch that pulls the anchor and hand the rod under the anchor rope. Thing was, here
is Cappy laying up there fighting a huge fish trying to pass the rod under the rope and we
are drifting!!! No anchor rope in the water just in a pile on deck, when that was pointed out
to Cappy the look on his face was priceless!!! Today’s picture is (L to R), Pin, Scooter, Allen,
and Jack"urate" in front. All 3 fish were landed with the world’s best reels, Accurates!!
Tomorrow we are planning a repeat of today and there are some huge fish in the area,
wish us luck. The Q crews out!!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 8
We made the right move!! After a tough time at the bank, we moved a little closer to home and had an outstanding day. We started out with some wahoo and then it was tuna time. After chasing a few bird schools for most of the late morning, we found a spot that wanted to bite and bite good. The first 4 guys to hookup new these were big ones. The kites went up and all hell broke loose. We landed about 40 nice size tuna with fish from 60 lbs to a fish that taped 276!!! The angler was Tom Burke from New York. He is fishing this trip for the 2nd year in a row and hooked the fish of a lifetime. The battle was a good one, it lasted about 2 hours and Tom lapped the boat 6 or 7 times. A picture is included. Our dinner was New York steaks (just for Tom) and twice baked taters. With new line to put on reels its time for me to go, more tomorrow, the Q crews out!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 7
This morning was almost the same as yesterday. After a couple of hours fishing with no luck other then sharks, we pulled the anchor. Trolling was about the same, a couple wahoo and that’s it!! This place can be tough, the current must be just right, if the weathers bad, it can hurt us, and the sharks well you get the picture. Everyone on board stuck it out till lunch, that’s when Joe decided to make a move. With just a couple tuna for our efforts this morning we bailed to parts still undecided. One good fish we did land today was Wes Cerny with a nice 140 or so lb tuna. We have plenty of time left to fish so we are not in panic mode just yet, our bait is the best we have had in many trips, and our anglers are all having a good time. Therefore, with homemade lasagna for dinner tonight and a fresh wahoo lunch already in our bellies, we will regroup this afternoon and hope for some better fishing tomorrow, so till then, the big Q crew's out!!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 6
What a tough day we had here at the bank. It started with sharks on us in the dark, and they did not leave us alone. We pulled the anchor shortly after daybreak and trolled for wahoo. Even that was tough, we made lap after lap around the bank. It is a small bank and it seemed like the fish were else were today. I really don't have much else to say, except we have a lot of fishing left and are doing our best to put fish on the boat. Monday morning we will try again. Hope the sharks leave us alone!!!!! The Q crews out!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 5
We started out with a tough day of fishing at the bank. The sharks were on us from the first fish we hooked. The first victim was Skip Kenison; the fish was a good one we hooked on the kite. After about 45 mins, the fish was at color, like someone flipped a switch; it turned brown, as in brown sharks. These things are ferocious, they will devourer a 200 lb tuna in seconds, leaving only skeletons, and it looks like bones after dogs have chewed on it for a while. One of the Singapore group, Pin Yam Ng, who is from Malaysia lost 3 tuna to the sharks, 2 of which were 100 lbs +. He will get his tuna sooner or later. In addition, Allen Lemberg had a couple of fish eaten. He did land a couple of nice fish today, one right at dark when he was the only angler at the rail!!!! Our picture today is Dave Klein of Chico with a fish around 165 lbs; this fish was one of the few to get past the sharks today. A funny story for today, (just for you J.K.), was when our crew member Jack tried to hit a wahoo on the head and missed, sending the bat over the side, we all had a good laugh and Jack took it fine. Over all we have hopes of fending of the sharks tomorrow and will try for more Wahoo’s, we ended up landing around 20 of them today. So, we will update again tomorrow, till then the Q crew's out!!!
Dave Klein 165 Lbs.
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 4
Another day of rigging and resting. We had our big tuna seminar today and made sure all our gear is ready for battle with some big yellowfin tuna. We also receive more giveaways from Gary Gillingham, and an offer from Jack Nilsen of Accurate. Catch a 300 lb tuna this trip and win any Accurate reel, up to a 50 wide!!!! That’s a pretty nice offer of a new reel to go along with catching a fish like that. To catch a fish like that would be a dream for any fisherman. On the boat, this trip is our favorite carpet guy, Allen Lemberg and his WIFE Beth. These two are a pleasure to fish with. Allen is someone the new guys should watch! He is one of the best fishermen we have on the boat throughout the year and a great guy too. Our plan is to get to the bank early Saturday morning and troll up some wahoo. We will be sending a report with a picture everyday. The picture today is Allen basking in the sun while prepping his gear on Friday afternoon. As always the food has pleased all and no one will go hungry this trip. Tonight it was chicken cordon blue with rice and veggies, with breakfast at 5:15 am it seems like food overload!!!! Time to hit the gym after a trip on the Q. Tomorrow will be a fishing report, not another bunch of b.s. So until then the Q crews out!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 2 + 3
Wednesday was spent doing the day 2 thing, rigging and resting. We had a tackle seminar and went over the basics of wahoo fishing. A lot of the guys have all their gear ready to go already. We had a pork loin dinner with garlic-mashed potatoes and all went to bed happy. Thursday we had a raffle for some things that Gary Gillingham purchased and brought for the trip, a nice thing for him to do!! We also had Joe on a rampage with our new crewmember, it was nothing major but it was funny. I will send a picture of Joe with his new "fishing shirts" in a day or two its like we moved to Hawaii. Jack has everyone on the boat fishing with Accurate rods and reels and all are happy about that. I saw a first today; one of our passengers was putting tape on both sides of his "waterproof" fish tags. This is to make sure they don't get wet!!! Always something new on the Q. Tonight we are having flat iron steaks for dinner, can't wait. Till tomorrow, the Q crews out!!!!
Accurate 16-Day/Ride/Fly Day 1
Off we go again, this time with "Jackurate" or Jack Nilsen of Accurate. We also have a group from Singapore, and one passenger from Malaysia. I'll tell you their names after I get them all. This is a 16 day trip with the option of flying home from Cabo San Lucas. With Jack on the boat everyone will be fishing with his gear, he brings a lot of gear along, enough that everyone can use a nice Accurate reel on this trip. Thanks Jack!! We plan on heading straight to the bank for some more battles with the big tunas. We ended up with 11 fish over 200 lbs on the last trip, way to go Coastside anglers!!! We will be on the move for a few days and will be updating daily, please come back tomorrow and tell your friends to check out our site. Till tomorrow, the Q crews out!!!!

Coastside Makes Withdrawal From Bank
The seventh annual Coastside Fishing Club Charter on the
Qualifier 105 returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing April 25 after a 15-day trip
with 17 anglers. Chartermaster Chris Hall of Modesto showed his anglers how to
do it by catching the biggest tuna. The anglers told dock reporter Bill Roecker
they had experienced shark problems in the Buffer Zone, but managed to get most
of their big tuna aboard at the Hurricane Bank.
“The water was 77 degrees,” said skipper Crisci, “and the current was a little
light and switchy, going from southwest all the way around to southeast each
day, so there were plenty of anchor jobs. When it got to southeast the bite shut
off.
“There was no wind and little swell. The weather was almost too good. When the
balloons wouldn’t work right, just go straight up. But we ended up with nine
cows.”
Chartermaster Chris Hall won first place for his 247.8-pound Yellowfin. He said
he used a sardine on a ringed 4/0 Super Mutu hook tied to 80-pound Big Game line
and 100-pound Big Game Spectra. He fished with an Accurate ATD 30 reel and a
seven-foot G. Loomis rod.
“It took two hours, and we had to get out the backup,” he said. He bit right off
the side of the boat, not 50 feet away. I just threw it out, got picked up
immediately. He stayed on top at first and ran right toward the high spot.
“They got the backup ready, but he stopped. Then he went down and I finished the
fight on the back. He came up in the port stern corner.”
Gene McKenna of Sunnyvale won second place for a 222-pounder. He said it ate a
sardine on a 5/0 Mutu hook on 100-pound P-Line and 130-pound Line One Spectra.
He fished with an Avet 30 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod, custom wrapped by John
Hom.
“The best fish of my life,” remarked Gene.
Jack Thrush of Milbray won third place for his tail-wrapped 216.2-pound tuna. He
brought it to gaff in an hour, after it bit on a double sardine rig under the
kite. He used the boat’s rig, with 7/0 Eagle Claw hooks on 130-pound Big Game
line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra. The boat rig uses an Accurate ATD 50 reel
and a Calstar 760 XXH rod.
Thrush said he also got a 130-pound tuna on a heavy Sumo jig in blue and chrome,
with 60-pound line and an Accurate BX2 600 reel.
Hal Smith of Pt. Richmond bagged a brace of ineligible cows with light gear. He
said he had to ask for some help with his 228 and 220-pound tuna. He said he
used the same outfit on both fish and took an hour and a half with the bigger
one. He baited sardines on 4/0 Eagle Claw hooks on 80-pound Izorline and
80-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Avet 4/0 reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod.
Qualifier 105 will depart again Tuesday April 27 on the annual Accurate trip
with chartermaster Jack Nilsen. The factory is operated by David and Doug Nilsen,
who will provide free loaner gear, the latest Accurate reels and rods to go with
them, for all aboard. There is still a spot or two open on the trip.

Coastside 15-Day April 23 Day 13 + 14
We spent Thursday and Friday headed north in some snotty weather. Wednesday night and Thursday until around lunch was a little rough. Good thing we are on the Qualifier 105, the best ridding boat in the fleet in bad weather!!! All the guys have broke down their gear, washed it and packed away for the next trip. Tonight (Friday) was prime rib night. Chris cooked this one (or 2), and it was mouth watering well. We are just outside Cedros Island as I write this. The plan for tomorrow is more movies, reading, poker, and of course eating!!!! Our E.T.A. to the dock Sunday is 6 A.M. and we have a nice catch of fish. A few of our tuna are right at 200 lbs and the guys have their fingers crossed that they are, as the 200lb mark is a very big thing for a long range tuna fisherman. A couple of other fish will possibly be personal best, and those anglers are crossing their fingers. Come down and watch us do our way-in Sunday morning, it should be impressive. We will let you know what happens Sunday, so till then the Q crews out!!!!!!
Coastside 15-Day April 21 Day 12
We spent today breaking down some of our big gear. Then it was some rest, movies, and some reel cleaning. Other then that, there's not much to report today. The guys all had a great time fishing for the big fish, as did the crew. The excitement of seeing 200 lb+ tuna jumping out of the water chasing sardines is something that never gets old. Watching an angler pulls and sometimes struggle with these beasts, then the happiness of pulling it over the rail and posing for pictures never gets old. A lot of time and money goes into planning one of these trips, and the payoffs is catching a fish of a lifetime is why we all love this stuff so much. The guys on this trip are having a great time and are planning another trip with us (hopefully soon). That’s about it for today, so till tomorrow, the Q crews out!!!
Coastside 15-Day April 20 Day 11
We finished our fishing at the Hurricane bank yesterday (Tuesday), and headed north. Our last day was good in the morning for Wahoo, tunas were not all that great but we did get a couple more biggins. The best was Hal Smith with a fish at 237 LBS. The picture with Chris, Tim, Travis, Hal, and Oscar is the 237 fish. It was landed on 80 lb test mono and a small 4/0 hook, we were lucky to land this fish, most of the crew and Hal all pulled on it at some point in the fight. Also Ernie Camilleri landed another nice one in the morning, the picture is Ernie and his fish at 160 LBS. Now a little about the trip overall, we had 17 guys, 4 of them on their first long-range trip ever, 1 on his second, and a few other on their first "long trip". Overall our hook to land ratio was outstanding. Most of the guys, even the new guys, did all their own connections. The connections have to be perfect with these big power full fish or else it won’t last long. From the spectra to mono connection to any knot or crimps, anything not perfect and your screwed!! They did a great job!! Now a run down of what we put on the boat. Tony Camilleri, 3 Tuna, 3 Wahoo, first trip ever. Ernie Camilleri, 13 Tuna, 5 of them over 100 LBS, biggest at 160, and 7 Wahoo, a great FIRST trip ever for Ernie and he is a perfect gentleman at the rail, we cant wait to have him back !! Mike Connely, 4 tuna, 4 wahoo, 2 tuna at 150, personal best. Paul Dixon, 5 tuna, 4 Wahoo. Pierre Grainer, 8 tuna, 2 Wahoo. Ray Griffin, 7 tuna, 4 Wahoo, personal best tuna at 208!!! Warren Griffin, 4 tuna, 4 Wahoo. These brothers are great to have on board, come back soon. Now Cris ( el presidenta ) Hall, Cris had a great trip with 5 tuna, 3 Wahoo, and a possible personal best. His big tuna to date is 267 LBS. His fish landed on Monday taped at 260, it will be close at the dock. This fish was landed on 80 Lb mono and was helped out with a backup rod, good fish Cris!! Jim Kirk, 6 tuna, 7 Wahoo. (Thanks for the cookies Jim! ) Phil Lisi, 7 tuna, 6 Wahoo, including the troll fish at 150. Gene Mckenna, 7 tuna, 5 Wahoo, personal best tuna at 222 LBS !!!!! Joe Morgan, 4 tuna,2 Wahoo. This was his first trip and he did very well, and learned a lot about the tackle we use. He also had a fish that taped at 197 LBS; it could go 200, cross your fingers for him. Hal Smith, 3 tuna, 2 Wahoo. TUNA AT 247 and 237!!!! Hals 2nd trip, not his last for sure, see you soon Hal!! Rick Sturiza, 9 tuna, 3 Wahoo. Long time Q fisherman and one of our favorites!! Jack Thrush, 4 tuna, 4 Wahoo. Jack had a fish at 130 LBS on 60 lb test with a jig, and a personal best of 207, and one at 199, it will be close. Jack is on the Q for the first time. He has fished other boats and we hope will be back!! Paul Weber, 7 tuna, 3 Wahoo. Paul bested his biggest fish 3 times on this trip, first one at 100, then a little bigger, then 120, then 150!!! Good job Paul!! Now for Duane (Dewy) Winter, WOW!! His first trip and he kicked @#%!!!!!! 10 tuna, 6 Wahoo and most his fish are over 100 lbs, with one at 208 LBS, great, great job!!!!!! Travel day today and tomorrow, we may stop and fish up north someplace, we will let you know, till then the Q crews OUT!!!!!!!!
Coastside 15-Day April 19th Day 10
Big fish Monday !!! The Guys were joking this morning that today would be " big fish Monday", they were right. We put the kite up in the gray and started picking away. The fish began to come in at the, 60 to 100 lbs, range until.... A couple of the guys wanted to fish some lighter tackle. Chris Hall hooked up almost the same moment Gene Mckenna did (not Gene Connelly, sorry, thought they were bro's !! ) These were big fish, Gene hooked his on a 90 lb fluorocarbon top shot. Chris was on 80 lb mono. As you can see from the picture these were both biggens. Gene's taped at 222 lbs and Chris's at 260 lbs!!!!!!! The picture today is these two bruisers (with their fish) !!! Both personal bests, way to go guys !!! Also today Jack Thrush (again) bested his biggest fish ever with one on the fence, it taped at 199 lbs !!! We will be back in San Diego this Sunday and will have a very nice catch, Come down and check it out. (We will have an e.t.a. later this week). Oh almost forgot we also had a great day on the Wahoo with everyone on board getting at least 1. We have 1 more day here, we will let you know what happens, till then the Q crews out !!!!!!
Chris Hall & Gene McKenna with two personal bests
260lb and 222lb
Coastside 15- Day April 18th Day 9
Another great day here on the Q. We started out with perfect weather this morning. A nice breeze, but the kites were not flying very well. After a little messing with the kites and some balloons to help lift them we were in the game. The big fish for the morning was Pierre Granier with a nice one. We wonder is the fish weighed more than Pierre? Jack Thrush hooked a big one that he landed after a short fight with a great rail fighting technique. That fish taped at 199 lbs. The picture today is Jack with crew member Jiro lending a hand holding it up. After a shrimp scampi dinner cooked by Cappy that everyone loved it was time to retire for the night. Everyone's getting some good rest at night after a long day in the sun. Till tomorrow the Q crews out !!!!!
Jiro with Jack Thrush 199 lber
Coastside 15-Day April 17 Day 8
Another repeat of yesterday for the most part. We did troll up some Wahoo today. We trolled for about 3 hours, and about half the guys ended up with some nice Wahoo. We dropped the anchor in a little shallower water today. We started hooking fish on the kite shortly after that. The fish were all good grade fish, 80 lbs to one that taped out at 199 lbs. Chris Hall hooked a big Wahoo on the anchor that was landed after a run only a Wahoo could make. Dewy also hooked another nice Wahoo. We have all gained a few pounds with Chris and Cappy feeding us like kings. The weather has also been nice, with overcast in the morning and sunny and warm in the afternoon. Today we had a nice wind to keep the kites up and it also makes the temps nice , other wise it would be pretty hot this far south. We are only half way thorough our trip with more days to fish and the boat already has a nice load on board. All aboard are having a great time. Until tomorrow, the Q crews out !!!! Hi Dale and Cindy wish you were here.
Coastside 15-Day April 15th Day 6
First thing this morning, in the grey, we hooked a few fish. Problem was they were sharks. We started looking around, and found a big bird school. Sliding up to it the fish were breaking all around us. We hooked a few fish right away. A couple of the fish were good size . Gene McKenna or Mike Connley. Who caught this fish. Place your bets. hooked and landed a fish around 140. We fished till lunch and decided to make a move. We are headed to the bank to spend a few days. With the fishing just started, we have lots of time left. We will be on the move all afternoon and tonight with a 6 a.m. e.t.a. to the bank. We will let you know then how we do. Till then the Q crews out !!!!!!
Well we started what we came so far to do, catch tuna and yahoo. The day started at around 4a.m. with a few of the guys trying to get some big mackerel for baits. At first light we started to troll for some yahoo. It was not what we had hoped for, the yahoo were scarce. After some trolling around we found some birds that looked like they may have tuna with them. They boiled a little but no bites. When we got rolling again, we hooked a fish on a big black marauder. The angler was no other then our buddy Phil Lisi. We all assumed it was a big skinny at first, but after a couple runs we thought tuna. Phil did (as always) a great job and landed a 150 lb tuna. We then changed our plan and went in search of more tuna. We ended up having a decent day. A few tuna around 150 and a good number of smaller ones were tagged and put in the hold. The area we are in is showing good potential and we will be here again tomorrow. The weather is good and the food is even better. Chef Chris made grilled pork chops tonight and they were perfect. The picture today is another loyal Q 105 angler, Jim Kirk with a tuna he landed right at dark. Until next time, the Q crews out !!!!!
!
Jim Kirk with a nice fish
Coastside 15-Day April 12th Day 3
We made a short stop at the rocks for some looking around today. With a few hours to kill,
the guys wanted to capture a few yellows or a few tuna for a meal. We managed to get
some nice yellows. A couple of our guys had never caught a yellow before. The power of these
fish is very impressive. It was fun to watch the first time a 35+ lb yellow bit one of their baits.
Ernie Camilleri, on his first long-range trip, hooked and landed the first fish. Now Ernie is a
fisherman but never had he hooked something with such power. The look on his face was priceless.
After a brief tussle he landed a nice fish, his first yellow ever!!! We had a little flurry before
the current died and we split. The picture we are attaching is of Duane Winter(Dewy) with his first
ever yellowtail, a 40 lb fish!!! The Coastside group is made up of guys that live mostly in nor-cal
or the S.F. bay area. We have Cris Hall, Pierre Granier, Jim Kirk, Rick Sturiza, and a few more

Coastside 15-Day April 11th Day 2 Not much to report today. We are headed south with a great group of 17 fishermen. Today was spent rigging all of the smaller gear. We may stop on Monday at the stones for a few hours to see what is biting there. We will try to get some "fish food' for a fresh caught dinner. So we will keep it short for now. Keep up to date with our reports, and let your friends know we are back on line, till tomorrow, the Q crews out !!!!! Coastside 15-Day April 10th Day 1 We are back, and ready to go fishing !! Today we left
on our 15 day Coastside trip with 17 fishermen. After some time
off all are ready to go. Capt. Tim fixed the sat phone and will be
reporting daily. The boats in great shape and the guys on this voyage
are ready. Most of them have fished with us before and have been
planning this trip for some time. We loaded our bait and pulled out of
San Diego around 1 p.m. The next couple days will be spent rigging up
everyone's gear and making sure that all our gear is in shape for battle
with some big yellowfin tuna, Wahoo, and what ever else wants to eat our
offerings. With high hopes for the next couple weeks we are headed
south. Till tomorrow, Joe,
Tim, Travis J,
Jiro, Alan,
Oscar, Chris and
Cappy are out !!!!! |

April 1
Phew, We are finished with the Gnarly 5 year ABS inspection and hull sounding keeping the Q 105 at the highest SOLAS safety standards for long range fishing. The boat is back at the dock and all the under water projects are finished. Prop polishing, shafts aligned, bottom paint and much more the eyes can't see.
Now Joe/Jiro will concentrate on what the eyes can see. New deck, polishing the hull, stripping the wood and the list goes on. The Q looks great. Checking all of the systems and making sure everything is in top notch condition.
The guys are getting itchy to go on our first trip of the season. We leave April 10th with the goofy Coastside group. We still have some openings on the 16 Day Accurate fly home trip. Come fish with Jack of Accurate. It leaves on April 27th. He brings about 80'Gs worth of gear for all to use "FREE" Call the office 619-223-2786
Sidebar: We bought yet another antenna, and had the Sat system completely gone through. We hope this one will work for the season. Look forward to our fish reports soon. I hope the menehune's/gremlins will leave us alone this year with this sat phone. We really do like keeping you all wishing you were on the boat.

March 18/2010
Michael Fowlkes called to inform me that Inside Sportfishing
will be airing the first of a three-part show taken aboard the Qualifier 105
last year during one of our specialty skiff/kayak trips. The first show will air
at 10am, Sunday, March 21st on Fox Sports West. This should prove to be, three
episodes where Fox is not fair and balanced as the fish, thankfully, took it on
the teeth. There has been a lot of posting here and there on these trips of
late, so if you are curious… Tune in.
Schmidt
Schmidt here posting for Alan Faye, as he is message board impaired.
I am typing he is talking.....
Talking with John and Joe from the Qualifier 105 and I am stoked to be one of
the crew and a skiff driver again for this years June trips. Big Hammer
Swimbaits and Fish Trap Lures are the sponsors and lots of great goodies are
passed out during the trips. If you don’t have bass gear, not to worry as John
has loaner gear if you need it. There is no finer place to learn about inshore
fishing then when you are on these trips, the majority of the anglers are
experienced anglers. The learning curve is exponential when you hang out with
this caliber of angler in combination with the quality of the fishing to be had.
Everyone thinks that these trips target big bass and there is no lack of them,
but the Yellows out of the skiff can be of a quality not often seen on this
coast. I was like a kid in a candy store running the skiff last year. Hope you
can join me on the Q.
Alan
Wow the Fred Hall Show is over and we are worn out. We want to thank everyone for the best show ever. We met a lot of new people and welcome them into the Q family. Mike Lum and all your helpers thank you for yet another great show
Now Let the season begin!!!!!!
The boat goes into the yard soon for her annual U.S.C.G and Solas and this year ABS( the narly one)(They sound the boat) Stay tuned inspections.
Things you will see and improvements you won't.
We will post some pictures of all the hard work going on.
Under the water line and over the water line.

Just talked with Joe and we will be off loading passengers and fish 6:00 AM Sunday Morning.
.
Gezz technology, We are so sorry, we heard from the boat last night and everyone is fine. They are trying to predict an ETA for Sunday morning which right now will be between 6:00/10:00 AM weather permitting. We will keep you updated as we get information. You can also call 619-223-1627 PLSF. They will have the update also.
Joe has been writing the day to day reports and we will post them in their entirety when he returns. We have had a gremlin with this satellite phone this year and it is pretty frustrating. First is was the antenna or three antennas and now we are on our 3rd hand set. The techs just can't figure our our problem. We apologize for the inconvenience. We know how much you like to read our fishing reports. We will have this fixed by our next trip.

Monday, November 16, 2009 Cowboy/Hoag 11-Day
Day 3
We awoke this morning to a strong offshore breeze and clear skies. We managed to land only a single
Yellowtail on the anchor. We were soon off the anchor and in search of porpoise schools. We had some
success right off the bat on a dozen Yellowfin from 20 to 25 pounds, but then we could not locate any
porpoise schools. The offshore breeze made looking for porpoise very difficult, as there were white
caps on top of the white caps. With our hat in our hand we started working south. By lunch with the
wind coming down, we were located in good area with several other vessels and picked away at the
Yellowfin Tuna for the rest of the afternoon. The grade of YFT is 15 to 25 pounds with the majority of
the fish being 15 to 20 pounds. Lots of rod and reel action, a great way to get the folks into the swing
of things for the trip. Tonight we are going to move down to north end of the ridge and prospect some
new waters with the Shogun. There have been some reports of a better grade of Tuna, mixed with
Marlin and Dorado. Great group of guys although the SD Charger fans including Jay’s brother Dean,
are still giving Jay a hard time. Our lady angler Gayle is no slacker and holding her own with the gents
on the back rail. Way to go Gayle. Thanks for reading our reports and make SURE you go to the 2010
schedule page and start planning ahead!!!! We have just printed a little gift certificate pamphlet that you
can give your better half if you need a little help getting going. It is the gift certificate you really want.
Wish us luck!!!
Thanks,
The Q105 crew and anglers
Just a simple travel day on the Qualifier. The normal routine of seminars, tackle prep, eating, eating
some more, naps, movies, books, bad jokes and finally eating some more again, have dominated the
day. Cappy’s tri tip is sure to delight all the carnivores on the boat tonight. I had a little sneak taste earlier
and asked Cappy, “What the name of the marinade that makes your tri tip so tender?” His reply, “Secret!”
You gotta love a good chef. Besides the fabulous food one of the nicest features in the Q105 galley is the
seating, everyone sits down to eat together. Two sittings are not necessary in order to get everyone fed
on this rig. Hot food all around, first time around. We do use paper napkins at dinner, but they are the
good ones and you can have as many as you need, eruridite eaters are welcome to bring their own cloth
napkins. One of anglers, Jay Archer this trip is from Colorado and given the Charger win and the Bronco
loss it has been a bit of a tough day for him. The Bolt boosters are finally taking pity on him and his big
lower lip. We will be getting rolling with the fish department tomorrow morning. Wish us luck!!!
Greetings from the bridge of the Qualifier 105. We departed Point Loma Sport fishing today just before noon and headed straight out to clear the Point. We had had the opportunity to pre-bait the Q while we were waiting for Big Ron Volmer who was able to make the trip at the last minute. Ron is a long time angler on the Q and we are glad to have him aboard, he is a great guy. I was reminiscing with Ron when he made his first trip on the Q105 in the late 80’s, amazing I look the same. LOL. The bait looks great and we are headed south with the Excel, Royal Star and Shogun as our wingmen tonight. Water temperature at the Coronado’s is 64 degrees and there is quite a bit of life in the first 40 miles below the Point. We will travel south, but the ½ and ¾ day runs should have the potential for a good November. With good weather, a nice sunset and the Isle of Cedros on our bow, it doesn’t get much better for the first night of our 11 day trip. Tom Lambert has returned to his fishing roots and has rejoined the Qualifier 105 crew and we wanted to welcome him back aboard. You all remember him, he holds the IGFA record for all tackle YFT @91LBS caught on the Q-105 a few years ago and he surfs.
Check the schedule page on the web for our 10 day pricing for next year, we think you will be pleasantly surprised.
P.S. The Q girls, Vicki and Tita will be at Baja Fish Gear in Lomita next Saturday promoting the stores July 2010 - 7 Day Trip. If you spend $100.00 on tackle at the store you can take $100 of the trip price. The ladies will have the certificates at the store and all the details. Joe just returned from the Larry Brown/Baja Fish Gear 10 day with a great catch of Yellowfin and Yellowtail from below Cedros.
Hope we can do as well this trip. Keep your fingers crossed for us. Manana

Baja Fish Gear Trip
Co-sponsored by Baja Fish Gear and the San Diego Fire Department, a ten-day trip aboard the Qualifier 105 with skipper Joe Crisci returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing November 14. There were two chartermasters, Larry Brown and Steve Puckett, and 25 anglers.
Catchy Tackle bombs accounted for the two jackpot-winning wahoo. John Caldwell of El Cajon won first place for a 48.5-pound skin. It bit on a red bomb wired to 50-pound Big Game line on an Avet HX reel and a Sabre seven-foot rod.
Mike Richardson of Haver City, UT won second place for a 34.8-pound wahoo that ate a purple and silver bomb. Jon Collins of Menifee stood in with his honorable mention 52.6-pound wahoo. That one was trolled up on an orange and black Marauder.
Everyone said they are spoiled about the big ones (300Lb), but this year they just weren’t around. There was still plenty of action to make our trip perfect and our arms sore. Great fishing. See ya next year.
Jack Pot Winners:
1st. Place: John Cornell 48.4 Wahoo
2nd Place : Mike Richardson 34.8 Wahoo
3rd Place: Peter Murray
and a nice Wahoo by Jon Collins 52.6 Wahoo (Troll)
Day 10 Nov. Fri. the 13th Baja Fish Gear/ Larry Brown
San Diego bound with a clean boat and happy anglers. Come say hi Saturday morning we should be in early.
Till Saturday, the crew of the Q's out!!!!!!
Day 9 Nov. Thurs. the 12th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
A great end to a great trip. Our day was spent fishing for yellowtail. We started out with some school size fish that
wanted to bite good. We had fish on surface iron, dropper loops and live bait. The guys had enough fish that we
were releasing some of the smaller fish to come catch after they grow up!! After a morning of tagging a lot of fish,
we went looking for some bigger fish. We cruised around for while looking at some areas we have got the big one
before. Just before we ran out of time, we found some bigger yellows. All most all the guys and our girl Donna had
bigger fish. We then headed for San Diego and will be cleaning the boat and doing some minor chores tomorrow
before we do a turn around on Saturday. We will be going fishing for 11 days with our fearless leader John Klein at
the wheel. This group is loaded with fish and will have some nice piles when we get into Pt Loma Sport fishing, so
if your buddy's with us there should be some B.B.Q.'S going down soon. Thanks to Larry Brown and Steve Puckett
for bring the goodie bags for our anglers. If you want a charter master that is on his game Larry is your man. He does
2 trips with us every year and they always sellout. Check out our trips for next year and sign up now!!!! Till tomorrow,
the Q crew's out!!!
Day 8 Nov. Wed. the 11th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
After a breakfast of homemade corn beef hash and eggs, it was time for more of yesterday’s activities. We found fish
early and stayed on them all day, following the porpoise and having a great day again!!
John Cornell had a great day today with a near limit of tunas for the trip. Kevin and Peter Murray are loading
up the freezer for a winter of fresh fish. Happy Birthday to Kevin who turned 20 on the 9th. Ed and Donna Manuszak
also are doing pretty well on the freezer fish. So is Porfirio Delgado (DEL), he has got his fair share of fish this trip and
is a pleasure to fish with. As far as a group, this trip has some first timer with some who have fished the Q many times.
We love it when a plan comes together and we can make memories for people to remember for a long time. With Larry
on board we will all have a picture c.d. to take home and share with all, along with a fillet or 2 !!! We are headed up the
beach tonight with a plan to get some yellowtail tomorrow as we are almost to limits on tuna !!!
So after some of Chris's grilled pork chops that were juicy and very tender we all head to bed with high hopes for tomorrow,
till then the Q crew's out !!!!
Day 7 Nov. Tuesday the 10th Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown
Ben Gay, that’s what the boat was smelling like tonight after a day of non stop action !!! We spent the day running
and gunning for tuna and we had some great fishing. It started about 8 am when we found some dolphins that were with
the yellow fin. We spun around on a spot of them and the tuna erupted behind the boat. We hooked a hand full each
stop for most of the day and ended up tagging fish for all our anglers today. We have a few first time long range fishermen
with us and after a slow start to the trip they are seeing what 10 day trips can be like. We have a nice load of all the
wanted species in the holds and everyone will be bring home plenty of fish !!! So the yellow fin wanted to play and so
did the yellowtail, with a mix of those fish for today. Tommy Anziano from Ontario is having a great time and is going t
o be fishing long range again, probably sooner then later !! On his 2nd trip is Dean Hepp from northern Cal. Dean is a
steelhead and salmon guide up north and will be hooking up with crewmember Tim this winter for a drift or 2 for some
steelhead !!! He is putting some nice fish on board and we hope will be back with us soon. As for strange things to
see on a long range trip this is right up there. Larry Brown was putting on a water balloon toss on the back deck
yesterday. Not good enough for Tim. He went inside and returned with some eggs !!! After a few tosses, the players
did just what Tim expected and pelted Larry with all the eggs !!!!!!! Overall it was a great day had here on the Q, hope
for more of the same tomorrow, the Q crews out !!!
Sorry we lost day 6 It went to the Cosmos
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 5 Nov 8We started out south today, way south. After sunrise, we started to troll around and had a look at a high spot not looked at in a while. We had 1 other code boat with us today. Both of us looked around all morning in great weather for nothing!! It was a tough day to say the least. We did manage to tag a handful of fish today and that was it. For our dinner tonight we had some lasagna that is a dish that Cris came up with but tonight Cappy was the one to cook it up. Its pretty good and all went to bed with a full tummy!! We also had a birthday today, Steve Puckett of Baja Fish Gear was the guy one year older, and we all sang to him. For tomorrow we are looking for some numbers for our group, we need it. Till then, the Q crew's out!!!!
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 4 Nov 7th
Today was a tough one for us. We started outside of Mag bay, and within a couple of hours, we had
1 dodo and no tuna. The thing is we were not the only ones to have it rough today. At lunchtime, we had
heard of only a couple of fish for the whole fleet!! Weather is good and so looking for fish is easy if there
were any to see. We landed 1 lone wahoo out off the beach a few miles in open water. The lucky angler
was Kevin Murray of Lakewood Ca. It was a nice wahoo and got all of our anglers on there feet. We
trolled all day for only a couple of marlin after that. We heard from one of our code boats of some nice
tunas down the line from us. We pointed the Q in that direction in hopes of getting to the area in the dark
tomorrow and finding a few fish for our group. We are hopeful for the next few days, and have a nice load
of bait for when we find'em. Wish us lots of luck, the Q crew. Capt. Joe, Cal, Tim, Travis J. Jiro, Cris, and
Cappy, till tomorrow.
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 3 Nov 6th
We started our fishing today with a stop on the upper end of the ridge. We trolled around for a
while with not much luck. Then just as captain Joe decided to make a move, one of our favorite regular
passengers Jesse James (Rte. S.D.F.D.) connected with a nice yahoo of about 45 pounds. We then
moved a few miles and dropped the anchor. It did not take long for the fish to get on us. We had good
action on some Yellowtail and yellow fin tuna with ever one pulling on fish that we both tagged and
released. We also saved a few tunas for a nice AI dinner tomorrow that will have even the few who
are not fish eaters wanting more!!! We are also moving down the coast tonight with high hopes for
some more action on yahoo and what ever else wants to test our anglers’ skills for the rest of the trip.
We have a great group on board and ever one is getting along great, wish us luck for the next few days.
SPECIAL NOTE: Steve Puckett would like to wish his lovely wife Sharon a happy anniversary and let her
know he is having a great time!! So, till tomorrow the Q crews out!!!!
Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day
Day 2 Nov 5th
Day 2 update from Charter Master Larry Brown:
Our second day of cruising down to the fishing grounds in perfect weather was interrupted by
phenomenal meals and our routine fishing seminar. After a great breakfast of fluffy pancakes and
thick bacon, a delicious Ruben sandwich for lunch, and a world class, 5-star grilled pesto scampi
linguini dinner; our group concluded we didn't really care if we caught any fish. Yeah, right. Tomorrow
we'll be in the zone and can't wait for furious wahoo, big Dorado and mad dog tuna to charge the boat.
I want to acknowledge the generosity of my 14 sponsors who provided raffle prizes for this fishing charter:
Shimano,AA Worms/Optimum Baits, Baja Fish Gear, Big Hammer Swimbaits, Booyaa, Braid, Chuck
Byron Art, HIgh Tide/Transition Jigs, Izorline, Mdra for their T-Shirts, Owner Hooks, Sport fishing
Report.com and Western Outdoor News. Steve Puckett represented Baja Fish Gear and brought
T-shirts for all anglers and crew as well as tons of gifts from his store, thanks to Ed Tschernoscha.
We held our super raffle last night which includes a cash fundraiser for four different Youth Fishing Programs and I am proud to report our generous anglers contributed exactly $1,000, which is a new record for this year's Larry Brown charity trips. A special thanks to all of our anglers and all of our sponsors for making this possible. A hundred raffle tickets were purchased and every single raffle ticket resulted in a prize/gift for our anglers donated by our sponsors. The first and last prizes to be drawn were for the 2-speed Tyrnos Reel and the all roller guide Tallus stand up rod both donated by Shimano. John Cornell won the Shimano Reel and Peter Murray won the Shimano rod. A huge thanks to Shimano!!!! We are all in high spirits and ready for a great fishing trip. We all send our love and thanks to our families for supporting our fishing addiction.
10-Day Baja Fish Gear/Larry Brown/SDFD
Day 1 Nov 4th
Well we have our sat phone / computer problems taken care of, and are headed out for 10 days.
With a couple days rest behind us, we departed on the Larry Brown / Baja Fish Gear 10 day trip.
With us are Larry Brown who is representing a list of company's that we will thank during the trip.
Also on the boat is Steve Puckett of Baja Fish Gear. These guys had raffle today for a table full of
nice giveaways, including a rod, reel, tools, some nice clothes and all kinds of fishing tackle.
(We will list some winners and Spencer's tomorrow since they are still doing this down stairs
as I'm writing this.) As for the trip plans, with some beautiful bait and a bunch of returning passengers
we have great weather to fish our way south. We will be prepping gear today and tomorrow
morning before making a move one way or the other. We hope for a mixed bag of species this trip,
and plan on a few fish dinners so these guys will need to start catching some fish soon if they want
to eat !!!! Just kidding, the guys in the galley have a great menu planned for this trip as always.
We will report more tomorrow and at that time I will thank some of our sponsors for this trip, so till then,
The Q crew's out !!!

Hurricane Bank Cows/Rusty Hook, Accurate Reels, Seeker Rods 15-Day
Qualifier 105 docked at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 31 after a 15-day trip sponsored by The Rusty Hook, Seeker Rods and Accurate reels. Joe Crisci was the skipper, and owner Alex Masumoto of The Rusty Hook was aboard, as were Bob Michener for Accurate and Brian Porter for Seeker. There were four cows on the boat.
“The bites came in flurries,” said skipper Crisci, “with the big ones biting best from three in the afternoon until five or later. You had to be ready. There were small flying fish around, and we found some red crab in some of the fish. We had nice weather.”
Brian Porter of Downey won first place for a 236-pound Yellowfin he bagged on the boat’s kite outfit with a double sardine bait rig. He said it had 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra on an Accurate 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
“I used my Two by Four Super Seeker bait stick for everything else,” he remarked. “It was the only stick I used the whole time. It was a time of day thing for the bite, from three until closing time.
“Sardines were our only bait,” continued Porter. “Most of us fished with 100-pound line.”
Phil Lisi of Costa Mesa got a brace of cows, tuna over 200 pounds. He won second place for a 229.9-pounder, and he also got a 208.8-pound Yellowfin.
“The big one fought like hell,” said Lisi. “He took me around the boat three times.”
Lisi said he fished with sardines on 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He used 130-pound Big Game fluorocarbon and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 30 reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
Jeff Bruner of Westminister got third place for a 215.2-pound tuna. He said he also used the boat’s kite rig, with squid bait on a pair of 14/0 Mustad 7691 hooks.
Tony Montez of Moreno Valley caught a 213-pound tuna on sardines under the kite, with the boat’s outfit.

Wack The Wahoo 14-Day
Bill Roecker for FishingVideos.com & the San Diego Sportfishing Council
October 15, 2009
Cowbells Are Ringing for the Q105
The season’s first cow tuna, yellowfin over 200 pounds, arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 15, when skipper Joe Crisci parked Qualifier 105 at the main dock to offload his 17 anglers, their gear and fish from the Hurricane Bank. The 14-day trip was a Loftus-Martin charter. Wahoo and tuna weren’t easy to come by, said the anglers, but there were enough fish so some anglers had two or three cows, and many fish, over 100, of tuna between 100 and 200 pounds. There were 12 cows.
Joseph McNamara of Campbell got two of those big tuna, and one fish took first place in the jackpot. It weighed 239.6 pounds; the other tuna went 201 pounds even. The big one came on the kite with a flying fish for bait. McNamara said he used a 12/0 Mustad 7691 hook on 130-pound maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra, with an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod, to do the job in a long hour and a half.“He went down, then out and around the anchor line,” said Joseph. “We got him, thanks to the crew. It was awesome! Of course I’ll do it again.”
Wes Cerny of Fallbrook won second place for a 237.6-pound tuna. He took that one with a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook on 130-pound Yo-Zuri fluorocarbon and 130-pound maxima line with 130-pound Big Game Spectra on a Penn VSX 50 reel and a Super Seeker 6455 XXH rod. He said the fight went an hour and 15 minutes.
Moe Alcala of Westminster won third place for a 229.8-pounder. He also caught one that weighed 217.6 pounds. He said he used the double sardine rig under the kite, with 7/0 Mustad Demon hooks, 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra on a Penn 80 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. He also got a big fish of about 180 pounds on the troll, with an orange and clack Marauder.
Co-chartermaster Larry Martin got a brace of cows at 218 and 206.6 pounds. He fished sardines on 8/0 Eagle Claw hooks tied to 130-poundSeaguar fluorocarbon, 1230-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 7465 rod wrapped by Smitty G. “I got those on the “Dolly Parton” rig,” said Larry. “Two bobber balloons. The big one fought about a half-hour.”
Rich Voss of Westminster bagged a brace at 221 and 215.4 pounds. The big one came on a sardine under the kite, he said. He used a Mustad 7/0 hook on 130-pound Maxima line and 130- pound Line One Spectra on a Penn VS 70 reel and a Calstar 755 XXH rod. The fish was onboard in only 20 minutes.
Ron Hirao of Huntington Beach took a 217-pound yellowfin with a sardine on a 5/0 Mustad Hoodlum hook, with 130-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 130-pound Jin Kai line and 130-pound Izorline Spectra on a Shimano 50 LRS reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod. Ron said the time of the fight was one hour.
Dan Harnes of Thousand Oaks caught a 208.4-pound tuna on a squid under the kite. He pinned the squish on a 12/0 Mustad 7691 hook tied to 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.
Co-chartermaster John Loftus bagged a 201.6-pound tuna with a sardine on a 6/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Maxima fluorocarbon, 130-pound Maxima line and 130-pound Line One Spectra. He used an Accurate 50 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod, and got his fish in 45 minutes.
Sharks weren’t a problem, said the anglers on Qualifier 105. Skipper Crisci said his sardine bait didn’t care for the 85-degree water on the bank, however.“They got real weak after a couple of days,” he noted. Still, he had a good catch for the first trip into the deep southern waters this season.

Day 8 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/08/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
We woke up to overcast skies with wind and ground swells fishing was slow until 3 PM when the
bigger Tuna went on the bite we caught some and lost some the High lights: Joseph McNamara's was 220 lbs
he hooked and lost one that was a little bigger in the afternoon, Rich Vos had a 140 #,202, and on the last troll
before we left the bank Vos caught a 199 pound Tuna. Fred Pease a 110 #, Jeff Cakin a 193# and John
Loftus a 216.The totals for 4 days at the Hurricane Bank are 41 Wahoo, 21 Tuna under 100 #s and 86
Tuna over 100 pounds We believe 16 of those will be Cows at 200 pounds or more.
We had fresh baked cinnamon rolls for the morning snack, Wahoo ceviche for the afternoon snack
and dinner was pasta with shrimp and scallops with????????-sauce. Dan Harnes one of the fisherman had
a birthday today, we all sang Happy Birthday to him.
We secured our gear for the ride north, we still have a couple of days to fish, we hope to make bait in
Mag bay and fish our way up the ridge.
Wish Us Luck

Day 7 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/07/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
This is fishing day 3 at the Hurricane Bank, weather is warm and humid with bright sunshine,
the wind picked up today but it is still very comfortable. After a slow morning, we had a bang up fishing after
noon with 5 Tuna under 100 lbs and 21 Tuna over 100 lbs.
Some high lights: Rick Voss caught a 220 & 180 lb, Ross Yasukochi a 190 lb, Larry Martin a 207 &
222 lb, Joe Mcnamara a 195 lb Earl Sandefur 175 lb, Fred Pease 165 lb, Moe Alcala 216 lb,all caught on Line
Sponsored by Maxima, there was such a flurry of action all the crew including the galley guys were working the
deck gaffing and helping with tangles.
We enjoyed an afternoon snack of fresh Shashimi. dinner of fresh caught Wahoo or Tri- Tip and fresh
baked Bundt cake with a shredded fruit topping.
We will fish here again tomorrow but likely move on after that because our bait supply is getting low, due
to the 85 degree water.
Wish us Luck,
All The Best,
The Crew and Fisherman of
the Qualifier 105Day 6 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus & Martin 14-Day (10/06/09)
Hi Fishing Friends,
The Hurricane Bank weather today is hot & humid with bright sunshine and a light breeze.
Trolling for Wahoo kept us busy most of the morning. In the late afternoon the Tuna went on the bite for
about 3 hours, our fish total for the day was 22 Wahoo, and 48 Tuna. This is a high grade of fish, David
Rash caught one that taped at 202 lbs, Rich Voss at 204 lbs, Dan Harnes at 199 lbs, Ron Hirao had one
over 200 but it was shark bit, we caught lots of fish from 100 to 190 lbs
We continue to enjoy great meals by Chief Chris Veratudela a high light for today’s lunch was a
seared Ahi salad. In addition to breakfast lunch & dinner each days menu includes a mid morning snack
and a afternoon appetizer.
We will be fishing here tomorrow and hoping that we can repeat today. We were kept very busy
with a wide-open afternoon bite. At one point we had everyone fishing hooked up to a big fish. Our hot
stick was Rich Voss, it seemed he had a fish on all afternoon!! He had 3 nice fish for the day. Richard
Bybee has had a good trip so far landing a wahoo and a nice tuna around 140# that he said would keep
his wife real happy!!

Day 1 "Wack the Wahoo" Loftus and Martin 14-Day
We departed on the first long trip of the year for the Qualifier105 today, October 1st, the Loftus and Martin
14-Day Wack The ahoo charter. Our charter masters this trip are John Loftus and Larry Martin. When it
comes to charter masters these anglers put in a tremendous effort organizing their trip, so that long time
and first time anglers can optimize the fishing potential of any trip.
It is always a fun moment during the trip when the fishing gifts from Loftus and Martin hit the galley tables.
This year there were tools, shirts, hats, flashlights, pocket knifes and some other cool stuff in a nice Loftus
and Martin backpack. Even the crew received a L&M back pack full of goodies. Yeah for us!!!!
In addition, all during the trip they will give away additional prizes from the tackle industry sponsors.
We will thank and name all the sponsors that donated swag for the trip, as the give a-ways occur.
This trip we are going to be trying to locate Wahoo on our we down the Baja coast as we fish our
way south.
After our traditional, welcome aboard lunch of hot dogs and chili with all the fixin’s and a great first night
chicken dinner, along with agood night sleep, we will be begin rigging gear for most of the day tomorrow.
The gear for Wahoo and Tuna are a test for all tackle, everything must be perfectto land these beasts.
We will be reporting everyday, keep up with what we are doing as the trip goes on, by reading our reports

A beautiful weekend to go out and meet the Q-105 at San Clemente and fish my own boat while staying on the Q. What a great idea. The Kayakers had fun and skiff fishing looked great. Thanks for a perfect weekend.

MC Swimbaits Skiff Kayak 7-Day 2009
Grouper, yellows and others. 26 different species
were caught. Thanks to Cory and all the organizers
for making this trip so unique. Next year is already
1/2 full hurry and get your spot reserved
What a way to spend your 60th
Birthday " Dave"
Thanks heaps for ALL that you do
for us at the "Q"
Day Six: Thursday Sept. 24th 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
We made our way back up
to our "spot", thank God for GPS, and it was socked in by that darn forsaken
fog again. As we stuck it out and fished the outer edges of the reef (a nice
halibut was caught in the process), the fog started to lift. The skiffs and
kayaks were once again put in the water and the anglers were soon floating
over the thick of the kelp. The Toad bass that they were looking forward to
catching the other day came out to play with a vengeance. Fishing the big
slugs in the mat paid off big time, bass up to 9.4lbs were caught by anglers
in the skiffs and kayakers. They were nailing the big bass fishing swimbaits
dropped down through pockets in the mat as well. Captain Joe anchored up on
a nice rock on the outside and the boat was soon in a nice bite for a
variety of fish (yellowtail, shallow- water reds, sheep head, calicos,
sandies, barries, bonito), with a number of them coming to the boat on
angler Dave Klein's homemade "knife-jigs". As the sun started to set,
everybody was loaded back up on the boat, the call for dinner was given, and
the galley was soon packed. Prime rib, bakers with all the fixins, steamed
broccoli, and a delectable bread pudding for dessert rounded off another
excellent day fishing aboard the Q-105.........Day Five: Tuesday Sept. 22nd 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
The morning started out with a bang. When they say positioning is everything, in fishing that cannot be more true. As we hauled yellows over the rail, we could see another boat in the same area with not a bent rod on the deck. The yellows were eating everything that hit the water (slugs, swim baits, bait, iron....), watching 5-6 yellows fight and crash on a slug is a sight to see. Angler Neal Cooke had bigger and better things in mind as he pinned a live bonito to a rig and sent it to the bottom, and guess what? (You wont know until you come down at see at the dock or till we upload the pics) With that being said we made our way up the coast to Cedros to fish our "Grouper Hole" that has produced for us many times before. Sure enough, not one, not two, but THREE large Broomtail grouper came over the rail for Scott McKay, Neal Cooke once again, and our very own Johnny Utah. (I think Mr. Cooke should go play the lotto when he gets to the dock.) The late afternoon also kicked out a few 'Butts, yellows, both sand and calico bass for those who still had enough energy to stand at the rail. We are headed back up the line to fish our "spot" back up the line as we all chow down on grilled pork chops, zucchini, and a wild rice pilaf. Mmmmmm.......
Day Four: Monday Sept. 21st 7-Day MC Swimbait Skiff/Kayak
We woke up to beautiful weather at the "Bush" and launching the skiffs and kayaks went very fast with the anticipation of catching big toad bass. Within minutes, the skiffs and kayakers were catching quality bass on the swim baits provided by Corey Sanders. The big boat poked around and scratched up some yellows and big bass for the anglers (and the cooks) while they waited for their runs in the skiffs. The afternoon was spent around East Island and bass were on the chew. The kayakers were hammering the tough lil buggers right up on the rocks inside the kelp line (I think some skiffers were wishing they were on a kayak). Once the wind started to pick up, we loaded everybody back on the boat and enjoyed a delicious Tri-tip dinner. Tomorrow we will be headed below Cedros to fish the coast for yellows on the slugs...
Day Three: Sunday Sept. 20th 7-Day MC Swimbaits Skiff//Kayak
We started day three down around the south end of Cedros with another filling breakfast with those witty chefs in the galley. Once the "skiffers" and "yakers" were off on there way, they found a steady pick at bass and also found some yellows to come on the plastics. The wind picked up a little off the beach and Captain Joe used his better judgment and took the boat around to the weather side of the island. What we found was amazing weather and even better yellowtail fishing. The skiffs and kayakers found incredible bites on both yellows and bass. Even the big boat got into a wide-open bite for the anglers waiting for their shot on the skiffs. Once the sun started making its way down; every body made their way back to the boat as the smell of B.B.Q. Chicken enticed them to the galley for dinner. We are picking up the anchor and making our way to the "Bush" to see what its holding in store for us. More to come...
This morning as we rolled into our first stop, the fog was thicker than the kelp. However, as the sun rose
over the mountains in the distance, the fog eventually lifted and the sun was soon beating down upon us.
Once the skiffs had been outfitted and launched, it was time to put in the kayakers with their fully loaded
personal skiffs. The bite was much slower than we had hoped for, nonetheless bass in the 5-6lb range
were being caught by bought "skiffers" and "yakers" Even a handful of yellowtail made it on the deck of the
big boat as we made our way around the outer laying stringers of kelp. We made a couple of drifts for the
elusive Flatties, with one coming over the rail for Kevin Mattson in the 20-25lb ranges. We eventually
loaded everybody up and started making our way down the line towards Cedros Island. The night was
topped off with another great meal consisting of NY steaks, a cheddar cheese green bean casserole,
and twice-baked potatoes, followed up with an awesome pineapple upside-down cake.
Day two was spent predominantly offshore scouting around for paddies holding fish. The paddies that
we found were holding some smaller grade Yellowfin and yellowtail. We arrived at Benitos later in the
afternoon and found a good pick on some better grade yellows coming to the boat on both the iron and
bait. At sundown, we left the island in search of better fishing along the coast. Cappy and Chris once
again put out an amazing dinner consisting of lamb chops, Greek peas, and lemon potatoes...definitely
good grinds.
The only thing that comes to mind about day three is "WOW!!!!” The fish we left the island to find were waiting for us with enormous appetites, and provided non-stop action for all the passengers aboard for a solid 3 three hours in the morning right after sun-up. It was madness with the entire rods bent and anglers shuffling up and down the rails screaming "Color!!!" and "Gaff!!!” To say the least, a good time was had by all. After the bite slowed down, we moved on up the line to Cedros. Captain Joe once again put us on the right spot and yellowtails up to 35# were coming over the rail up until sundown. After a long day of sore backs and arms, we made our way up the lee side of the island and enjoyed a B.B.Q rib dinner that was finger lickin' good. Yum, yum, gobble, gobble...
Day One: Friday Sept. 18th MC Swimbaits 7-day Skiff//Kayak
We left the docks today with tanks full of good-looking, lively bait. With all of the free giveaways that Corey Sanders from MC Swimbaits (swim baits, slugs, hooks, springs, hats, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and a few lucky crew even received rods) handed out, we highly doubt that we will even need the bait. Weather permitting and fish willing, Sac Reef, here they come. Scott and his gang were quoted as saying " we are giddy with excitement to go on this trip. As the waters are glassing off, sun is staring to set, and the smell of Chicken Alfredo with garlic bread fills the galley, thoughts of landing world class Calicos at one of our favorite bassin' holes on our way down the line dance in the heads of these eager anglers. For some reports of our past Skiff trips go to our Skiff-Kayak schedule and "Click" on the Link" More from the crew tomorrow. Go Chargers!!!!

Day 4/Avet/ Salas Jigs/Larry Brown 9/5/09
Today we started
with big plans after yesterday. The weather came up a bit during the
night, windy, choppy seas for us at daybreak. We started to look
around after a little fishing in the dark for nothing. It was a long
time before we found some fish that would bite. We found some
albacore that were hungry and dropped a few in the R.S.W. after a
short stop. Then it was back to glassing for the crew as we searched
for the morning with only a handful of tunas. The day was tough for
most the code boats in the area. We have plans to go kelping
tomorrow with yellows and dodos in mind. Most of our group has all
the fish they want and are looking for some action on the kelps,
with a couple of dodos all would be happy!!! We have some spots on
our fall trips still open, time for wahoo (?), big tuna (?), ect,
call the office for info or to signup for next season as the
schedule is being planned as you read this. Till tomorrow, the Q
crew's out!!!
Day-3-Avet/ SalasJigs/Larry Brown 9/3/09
Wow, what a great day. Last night Captain Joe moved the boat to a zone where another code group partner had scored
some bluefin. We got into a classic plunker bite of beautiful grade, 25 - 50 pound bluefin tuna. Everybody on board had
at least a couple of nice bft going into the late afternoon. With two hours to go before sunset and the full moon rising we
found a school that wanted to play. They stuck with us and for a full hour it was epic tuna fishing with every bait getting
slammed. Bloody Decks would have been proud, because our decks were pandemonium and bloody. For a while, the
sinker rigs were the ticket and of course a heavy Salas 6X Jr was a sure thing. Big Hammer Swim baits by Sunrize and
Optimun Plastics by AA Products who both provided free products to our anglers also fooled several nice tuna. The new
Avet Raptor was on board spooled with 60 pound spectra and a very short 40 pound fluoro leader and it tamed dozens of
tuna with ease. This reel gets 17 pounds of drag at strike and with the dual drag system and low speed all you do is turn
the handle and bring these bruiser tuna to gaff.
Thanks again to all of our generous sponsors and our crew for making the day so memorable.
Two more days of beautiful weather and productive fishing -Booyaa!!!!!!!!!!!, Who by the way is also a generous sponsor
of our trip
Love to all our families;
Charter Master Larry Brown and the Q-Crew
Day 2/ Avet/Salas Jigs/ Larry Brown
Hello Fellow Qualifier Anglers;
We are enjoying gorgeous weather during the hurricane. Great boat, great crew, great cuisine and great
commeraderie and we have just ended day one on the Qualifier 105. Captain Joe stopped the big boat
on a meter mark last night and we awoke to hungry Yellowfin tuna at grey light. We enjoyed a good bite
on a beautiful grade of YFT up to a nice 50 pounder caught by JC Hardemion. We saw a cool variety
of fish during the day with dorado, Yellowfin tuna and skip jack before Nona Grancell caught the first of
our albacore. Only 3 of the longfins were boated but they were all 35 pound class fish. We are making a
move tonight to an area where a code group boat had a good score on some big Bluefin, so after a
beautiful sunset and tasty, perfectly prepared tri tip steak dinner we are excited about our prospects for
tomorrow.
All of our anglers want to thank all of our sponsors including Avet, Salas Lures, Izorline, Western Outdoor
News, Booyya,High Tide Lures, Braid Products, 976TUNA, AFTCO, Chuck Byron Kids Arts and Fishing
Program.
Wish us good luck and we'll talk to you tomorrow.

6-Day Accurate Reels (8/31/09)
Another great day fishing the Qualifier 105. We awoke to grease calm weather this morning. First thing, we tried for some yellowtail but they did not want to bite for us. We pulled anchor before sun up and started to look around for some tunas. Within about 15 minutes, Capt. Joe found them. We drifted with them for a few hours and put a nice grade of fish in the holds. Today we had Jack from Accurate giving away a reel to the biggest fish. Big winner was Rich Callen from Duena Park with a tuna of 62 lbs. Nice fish and a great prize for a great fisherman, see you next year Rick!!! If you want to try out some Accurate gear, think about one of our yearly trips with them. Jack has enough gear for all, again thank you Jack!!!! We are in San Diego tomorrow and have a day of before our next trip so till then, the Q crew's out!!!
6-Day Accurate Reels (8/30/09)
What a morning we had today! We spent the night putting some macarel in the deck boxes for bait. About 4am, we woke the boat to catch some bait. With a dropper loop rig in the trolling strap, we loaded up until a 50 lb+ yellowtail was put on board by Capt Joe. That was all it took to get a few more guys to set up droppers. Within a few minutes we hooked a couple more, this time it was not a yellows but white sea bass!!! It was an exiting couple of hours to say the least. We have first time long-range fisherman Taylor Barriger on the Q. He has had a great trip hooking Yellowfin, yellowtail, and a see bass that will be over 50 lbs!!! Also with us is Paul Everts, a past Q fisherman. Paul has had a fantastic trip also, he has a tuna and a couple of whites that will all be in the running for jackpot, see you next year Paul!! We would like to thank Jack Nilsen of Accurate for the shirts, the rods and reels for all to use and the great company he gives all on board his trips, thanks Jack. Till tomorrow the Q crews out !!!
6-Day Accurate Reels (8/26/09)
HOT, that is what our day was !! We fished Guadalupe today and the weather was sticky. We rolled into the island right at first light. We found the black porpoise that have held fish for a couple weeks now. They did not disappoint, we hooked a couple of nice fish on the first stop. We ended up with about 1 fish for all on board, and these are mean tunas of around 40 lbs on average. The guys on board all had their hands full with these fish. Tomorrow we are going to be closer to the beach looking for a load of yellowtail. We hope for some action tomorrow as today was a pick bite to say the least. We will report back then, the Q crew out !!!
6-Day Accurate Reels Trip (8/25/09)
This morning we put the trolling jigs in the water before sunrise. It wasn't long before we trolled
up an Albacore tuna. A couple more on bait then we trolled on. After a few stops like that we had
a period of time that we were seeing fish, but they were not biting !!!! After We finally found a
school that would bite. We put some fish in the R.S.W. and made a short move before hooking
up on the troll again. We ended our day with a nice catch of fish for the day. After some ribs for
dinner most were prepping their gear for our day tomorrow. We will be at the Lupe first light
with hopes for some Yellowfin tuna.
Till tomorrow the Q crew ( Capt. Joe, Cal, Jiro, Tim, Travis II. Chefs: Chris, and Cappy) are out !!!!
A link to a report and picture of our dear friend Del. We will miss you buddy.
A toast of "The Captain" to you. From all of your friends.

Congratulations Ryan
this was his first fishing trip
2-Day Offshore/ Bonanza Trip (8/23/09)
We're back!! We departed today on a
2-day open trip. The last few days we had a couple of 1.5-day trips. The
fishing was o.k. but not what you hope for with such limited time. The
good news is today the albacore decided to bite for some of the other
boats. With some bait already on board, we needed only a short time at
the bait receivers. With our tanks topped off, we departed the point
around 12:30. We had to run for a few hours before we reached the area
that was holding some fish. It took a couple of troll teams before our
first jig strikes. We boated a couple of the tunas we were hoping for,
albies!!! We then had a couple of more stops before a big school of fish
showed up. Just about everyone on the trip was bit at the same time.
With a few casualties at first,
it was wide open for just a short time before they split. We ended up
with a box full of fish to end the day. Wish us luck for tomorrow, till
then the Q crews out!!!!

1.5-Day Trip (08/20/09)
1.5-day trips are a great way to fish for the big offshore species without committing to a full long-range trip. The boat leaves in the evening and travels all night to the fishing grounds, going out much farther than the one day boats can. Fishing starts first thing in the morning and continues all day without having to worry about the return trip. After a first class dinner, you retire to your stateroom while the boat runs all night and delivers you to the dock early in the morning. You've maximized your fishing time and there's no late, tired drive home.

Thanks guys, great people make a great trip, Oh, fishing was good too.
A special thanks to Chris/Dale for putting this together. See ya next year
Call Dale about next years trip.
Coastside 5-Day (08/16/09) We finished up our trip fishing off shore today. The kelps were few and far between today. We scoured an
area that had the right conditions, but few fish. We scratched away all day and ended up with a nice catch
of Yellowfin tuna. The group overall has enough fish that most ended up with more than they had planned!!!
Most of the gang came down from nor cal so they are planning how to pack up there fish to keep them cold,
and planning a couple of cutting parties for back at home. Fellow coastsiders should contact someone they
know from the trip to help out (and maybe score a fillet of two!! ) Thanks to our charter master Dale Myer for
putting the group together and bringing some nice swag for all!! Putting a group together is a lot of work and
time on the phone, so thanks Dale!!! The next trip for Coastside is a 15-day in the spring and that trip is
already full!!! We have a couple 1.5-day trips on line for this coming up week so if you would like to fish the big
Q call the office for more information. So, till then, the Q crew's out!!!!
Coastside 5-Day (08/15/9)What a dy we had here on the big Q!! We arrived at our fishing destination at first light. We started to look around and Joe spotted some big spots of birds working a big area of bait balls. It was not long till we were in a wide-open yellowtail bite. We have a couple of first time long-range fisher people on board and they are having a great trip. Steve and Janice Lowry of Walnut Creek love their first trip. Janice showed the old pros how to do it today, landing 10 yellows before some had 2!!! The kids did well again, landing their share today. We had a drawing for a new Seeker rod at dinner, Dale Myer, our charter master for this trip put all the names of our farther/son combos into a hat and Capt. Joe drew one. Big winner, Rich Walker of Chico won a nice Seeker 25 lb stick. We will be off shore tomorrow looking for kelps and tunas, wish us luck. Till tomorrow, the Q crew's out!!
Coastside 5-Day (08/13/09)
We awoke to great weather and a full belly of homemade hash and eggs and pulled the anchor before
sunrise. After a short time, we found a spot of porpoise which had tuna with them. We made a drift and
put a hand full of nice grade fish in the RSW. Our morning went like this, find the porpoise, make a drift
and hook 6 to 10 fish each stop. These fish are strong and put all tackle and anglers skills to the test.
Today we had the kids all hooking and landing fish once again. Anson Konstantinopolous (say that
last name three time fast!) was on fire hooking a number of fish and landing them like a pro. Bye the way
he is 8 years old and about 4 1/2 feet tall!!!!! His 12-year-old brother Hayden also did very well today.
Another hot stick, landing a hand full of fish today was, John Hibner. John is a great fisherman and we
are glad to have him and his sons Ben and Tom on board. Crew member andlicensed captain Tim’s
dad Dennis and Tim’s brother Rich are on board. Rich landed a nice 30 lb + Dorodo today off a kelp.
We are on our way to fish some yellowtail tomorrow, so till then, the Q crews out!!!
Yesterday we split San Diego on our 5-day Coastside trip. We headed to the Lupe and today we fished.
Here is more from Coastside member George (Chayson'M). With 23 Coasties on board, we were in hopes
of some good fish and opted to skip the Bluefin and albacore off shore and go for some of the quality YFT
out at the Island. We arrived at the Island at about 11:00am and started to look around and troll some fish up.
We spotted some black dolphin within 10 minutes and were instantly gratified with some quality fish. Within
the first couple of hours, we hook and landed about 20 fish in the 50 -70 lb ranges.
Mr. White also thrilled the entire boat as we had 3 up close and personal visits. This fish was AMAZING; it
came up within 5 feet of the boat and was estimated to be 15 to 17 feet long! It was absolutely amazing to
see such a huge fish in such clear conditions... and she didn't even help herself to any of our fish today
(Knock on Teal)!
The rest of the day was pretty much the same with a steady pick at the fish till about 6 PM. Nothing wide
open but a good steady pick. We did have one good run on the kite for about 6-7 straight baits getting bit
within 20 seconds. Totals for the day were 49 Tuna. Hats off to the kids on board, Josh, Ben, Daniel,
Anson and Hayden. Between the 5 of them, they landed 13 of the fish, more than 25% of the total fish catch!
Most of the kids are on deck tonight catching Scad Mackeral up to 4 lbs, it's a wide-open bite.
Quite a thrill to see how good these kids are at fishing, they are able to out fish most of the adults.
Weather today was very nice with a slight breeze to about 15 kts in the afternoon. Until tomorrow... wish us luck!! Thanks Goerge, now to a funny story for the day. Long time Q crewmember Jiro is back and today was on his back!! He sat down in a small folding chair and the thing fell to pieces. He fell over and looked like a turtle that was turned on its back, good times!!!!! The Q crews out!!

Texas 5-Day (8/10/09)
We
finished up on our trip this morning with a few tuna fish. They were
nice fish; about 60 lbs and all of them were hooked on sardines. We had
to end our fishing around 11 am and headed for San Diego. We cleaned the
boat and after lunch, it will be a couple of odd jobs then a nap or a
movie for most. We will be in and out tomorrow with a turn around for 5
more days. The next trip is the Coastside 5 day. Coastside is a group of
fishing people from mostly the San Francisco Bay area. They all love to
fish and are one of our favorite groups, as they all have a good time
and love to play small pranks and jokes on each other. I will let you
know about any things that go on. You may want to look at their website,
it's loaded with all kinds of information from fishing tips and
locations to boats for sale and all kinds of other stuff. We will report
back then, so keep us on your favorites and check back everyday!!! We
have had a great season so far and hope to see you all riding the big Q
soon. The Q crew ( Joe, Cal, Jiro, Tim, Travis, Cris and Cappy) are out
for now !!!Texas 5-Day 8/9/09
We fished
off shore today. The weather is not the best for looking around for
kelps or breaking fish. We hung in there and put together a productive
day. We ended up with a nice catch of Yellowfin tunas, yellowtails, and
some dodo's to put down in the wells. A nice catch that was made
yesterday I forgot to mention. Henry Nixon
is here with his dad Will
and friend Charlie Stucky from San
Antonio Texas. At the Lupe he hooked his first marlin, the fish did what
people travel half way around the world to witness. It jumped and jumped
and tail walked on the surface right at the boat then sounded deep.
After a brief fight on 40 lb tackle the fish won its freedom and swam
away. Needless to say Henry was very happy to get to pull on such a
beautiful fish. With one more day to fish, we have plans to finish
strong and put a few more fish in the holds, till then the Q105 crew's
out!!!
Texas 5-Day (8/8/09)
Today was a pick bite at Guadalupe. We pulled the anchor about 5:15 and started to look around. After a little while
we put it back over and started to catch a few tuna. The kite was working well for a few hours today, as most of the
guys that were up on the kite today hooked and landed yellow fin tuna. We have a couple of hot sticks on board. Every
time you saw either of those guys, they were hooked up. Jim Manhattan was on fire today hooking 3 fish before some
guys even had breakfast!! Also pulling on few fish today was one of our loyal passengers, Lloyd Doyle, Lloyd is our
printer and makes up all the Q 105 broacher's that we mail out or you pick up at the office. We had a little wind this
afternoon and scratched for most of it. We are going off shore tomorrow to look for kelps and tunas of any type. More
tomorrow, till then the Q crews out!!!
Texan 5-day (8/7/09)
Good
fishing at the Lupe, that is what we found when we arrived. We started
out trolling and looking around a little. After a couple of drifts for
some tuna, we dropped the anchor. With a good sign of tuna around us we
started to hook a few fish. The size of the fish was around 45 lbs on
average. We did have one fish that will be pushing the
100 lb mark back
at the scale at Pt. Loma Sport fishing. Bob Wagner nabbed the fish, it
was a hard fighting fish but Bob did a fantastic job fighting it. Also
on this trip is Austin Emmerling from Nevada City Ca. Now Austin has a
couple of OLD rods with him. He likes to go to thrift stores, yard sales
or was ever he can find old rods to refinish. He strips them down and
rebuilds them. He used an old bamboo rod that is from the 1930's that he
built. The rod is as nice looking a rod I’ve ever seen!! He said I want
one fish, and then I will retire the rod. Well after a nice
60lb tuna,
he could not put it down. He then landed a 40 + lb yellow on the rod!!!
We had a little flurry of yellows today that will all go at least 35
lbs. These are some hard fighting fish and put your tackle to the test.
For tomorrow, more of the Lupe for us, till then the Q crews out!!!
Texan (5-Day) 08/07/09
We are back out on a 5-day trip. Our first destination is the Lupe. We are hoping for a repeat of the last trip, as it was
a near perfect trip. Yellowfin and yellowtail at the island, then offshore for more of those and some bonus Bluefin!!! The
jackpot fish last trip was around 60 lbs and they were beautiful fat fish. This group is exited to be going to the lupe and
are all rigged up and ready. With a 10 am arrival, we have big plans for tomorrow, till then - the Q 105 crews out!!!!
S
We want to thank Bill Shed, and Mark Slyman from Aftco. The guys look really good.
Any one who doesn't own at least a pair of their shorts, needs to, they are the best for fishing.
They also have a full line clothing and other great fishing stuff
Check out their web aftcobluewater.com.

Barnett Family Charter
Qualifier 105 docked under Joe Crisci’s hand at Pt. Loma Sportfishing August 4 after the annual five-day Barnett Family Charter. Chuck Barnett is chartermaster of the universe.“We had very good fishing,” remarked Chuck. “We only lost two fish to the white sharks.”Nick Pisciotta of Ojai won first place for a 66.8-pound yellowfin. He said he got that one with a sardine on a 4/0- Mustad hook tied to 40-pound Izorline fluorocarbon leader and 40-pound Izorline on a Penn 500 reel and an unknown rod. Dick Barnett 75 years young won second place for a 63.8-pounder, and Dan Alcaraz of Hacienda Heights got third place for a 60.7-pound yellowfin tuna. This Family has chartered the Q-105 for 20 years.
Thanks to Chuck for all of this hard work, see you at the Fred Hall Show. And a big thanks to all the fishermen that support the Q-105 and Barnett Family. What a great trip
Side Bar: Tanner beat his big brother by .2 lb. He had his personal best YF 60.2 Lb. Not bad for 14 years old. These two brothers put some fish on the boat enough that dad had a great big fillet bill. Way to go you guys.
Barnett Trip (5-Day) 8/4/09
We ended the trip with a bang. Today we wanted to end the trip with Bluefin, and that is what we did!! After stops for
6 to 10 fish most of the morning we spotted a bait ball with fish crashing all around it. We rolled up on the first one and
it was about 60 feet around and as deep as you could see. It had a whale swimming around and through the middle of it
