Fishing Report. November 16-26, 2008.

Day 0 – Way too Early

My buddies Bryce, Jeff and Normie pick me up at 4:45 am and we are at the landing by 5:30 am to meet the rest from the Boss Hoag-AHI open charter 10 day trip on the Q105. Way too early for all of us but when we get there, things are pretty busy. Six long range boats coming in off 10 day trips plus locals going out to hit the kelp beds. We wait our turn and board around 11am. After a stop at the bait dock and numerous scoops of dines, we are finally off on our fishing adventure. Most of the long range fleet is already ahead of us so our destination for tomorrow is undecided. Offshore conditions are absolutely incredible. Not a ripple on the ocean for miles. That night while in my stateroom, I actually counted the number of times we hit a "swell". Official count was exactly three and those were probably boat wakes. Yeah it was pretty flat calm.

Day 1 – Traveling South

Just a travel day south to get in position for day 2. We spend the day rigging up our rods, tying on jigs, and hooks. We make a brief stop outside San Benitos for a quick hit but get only one yellowtail tagged and a few bonies which are released. We don’t stay long and resume heading south. Capt Joe tells us we will be hitting paddies tomorrow looking for dorado and wahoo. Weather remains awesome.

Day 2 – Offshore Paddy Hopping

We get into the kelp paddy zone and find 2-3 dozen good size kelps but most hold nothing. We find 2 with good concentrations of keeper size dorado. I tag 4-5 and released just as many fish in the 10-15 lb range. Normally I’d probably hold off on tagging dorado but the trips we saw offload had few dorado so I decide to keep some. On one stop I do get a solid hookup on a hoo with a short drag burning run on my 50 lb rig and things are looking good but I get bit off above my wire leader. I’m thinking another hoo chased my bomb hanging out of the others mouth and clipped my line. My buds aren’t fairing much better, between the 4 of us we get our share of bites but none stick. We trolled by a few paddies holding smaller dorado and they charge up the boat wake into the chum line but we don’t even bother stopping. We get 4 skins on board for the day along with 90 dorado. Not a bad start but I know we can do better and Capt Joe points the Q105 towards the Uncle Sam bank for tuna and yellowtail tomorrow. Reports have been very good from other boats that stopped there and been good for the last couple of weeks.

Day 3 – The Ridge

We are anchored up on a high spot at the Uncle Sam bank before sunrise. I get up on deck and see a few others soaking bait already. I get ready for the day and eat some fruit while watching others fish. Doesn’t take long before someone gets bit and that’s all I need to see. I grab my 30 lb rig and toss a bait in. Takes a few minutes for the dine to swim away and then I feel my bait get slurped up. Toss the reel in gear and set the hook. Cool…Fish on. Ends us being a 10 lb yft. Kind of on the small side but considering we didn’t see any last year I tag it. The yt really start to bite and I deck 2 before the first call for breakfast. After I sit down for breakfast and get back on deck, it’s mostly yt coming on board so I switch yo yo 6x jr iron in the green sardine color. 3 drops and 3 tails, what more could you want. After that, something changes and the yt bite fades but the tuna get going good. Get a lively dine away from the boat with a 4/0 hook and 40 lb test and you were sure to get a bite. I decided to try the test the limits of my Torium 20 and fished it with a short topshot of 40lb P-line mono and it did fine matched with one of my 610 Calstars.

Something I’ve never seen before were big trigger fish under the boat. I think I got 4 flylining a sardine and most were over 12 inches and fat. No pictures of these guys unfortunately because we just shook them off. I tried circle hooks for a while but couldn’t seem to get bit so I went back to J’s and started hooking tuna up again. Funny thing is my buddy had the opposite problem. No love with J’s but did fine with circles. Go figure. Anyhow we had 200 yft and 87 yt by lunchtime. Not too shabby right? Tuna ranged from 10-35 lbs and yt were in the 10-15 lb range. With a nice catch on board and everyone tagging some fish, we pulled the pick around lunch time and headed south toward Thetis Bank to look for wahoo aka skinnies. Trolling was mostly a bust for the afternoon and for most of the trip for that matter. We continued south towards Mag Bay to prospect for bigger grade tuna at the lower banks and alsosearch for wahoo and dorado.

Day 4 – Mag Bay

We did our tour of duty prospecting areas for the bigger grade yfts offshore of Magdalena Bay. Covered lots of water with good looking conditions but very little sign of anything biting. Everyone puts in their time on trolling rotations but it produces nothing. After lunch Capt Joe points us east closer to Mag Bay where we immediately see positive signs of life. Big spots of working birds, mammals, and several yachts working a big area. We make a stop on a floating pallet for about 2 doz dorado but they are on the small side so I don’t keep any. We do get some wahoo with the dorado but they are dinks, 12-24 inches. I get one on the bomb and release it. We slide up on working birds and get some hookups that turn out to be marlin. For those of us that saw this last year we wind up and watch the others pull on the spikes. Its cool the first few times you pull on a marlin but they just trash your lighter outfits so I am content to just watch. After a short tug of war, the marlin are released we head north where the Red Rooster found some good tuna fishing off pods of porpoise.

Just before it’s released.

We catch up with the porps about an hour later and when we slide up on them, get immediate hookups on bait. First stop only produced 4 tuna but the next shot produced hookups for the whole boat. Talk about chaos with most everyone in the stern hooked up with 15-30 lb tuna. I went up to the bow and dropped a sardine over the side and get bit right away. Two of my buddies dropped in with iron and hang fish; on our next stop and I toss a chrome jig in off the bow and get short bit but nothing sticks. By the now the sun is setting so we can’t fish anymore and head back to the Uncle Sam Bank for the night.

Day 5 – Uncle Sam again.

The morning finds us back on the northern part of the Ridge and it’s a copy of Day 3. The tails show first and bite then the tuna come in and take over. I hang 3 tuna with 2 in the 30-35lb range and 2 yt. I donate one of the yt and tag the rest. After 3 hours of steady action Capt Joe decides to pull the anchor and we head offshore towards Alijos Rocks aka the Stones. The Indy found some better grade tuna at the Stones in the last few days so we hope to pick up some 50-100 lb tuna.

We find one paddy where Norm gets a nice hoo and I hook up a bigger model dodo on a bomb. I land the fish and give it to Norm who needs some dorado. We do another troll stop on a wahoo that bit a black and orange Marauder but the stainless steel hook ring breaks at deep color. Heart break for Dave because this was his first long range trip and that would have been his first wahoo. We continue traveling to the Stones and will be there at first light tomorrow. We are threatened with catching squid tomorrow morning at 4am but the call never comes.

Nice Dorado off a Paddy

Norm with wahoo that bit a Ballyhood Rattlehead

Day 6 – The Stones

We arrive at Alijos at first light. The American Angler and Excel are already anchored up but will be leaving. We hear the other boats only got one wahoo but we make an obligatory troll around the Rocks before we anchor up. No jig strikes so we set up outside of the Excel. A few eager newbies toss out a bait before the boat has a chance to set back on the anchor but most of us are in no hurry and wait and see what develops. After a few minutes Capt Joe announces he is seeing fish nearby on his meter so I go for my 50 lb rig (Trini 40, 4/0 hook and 700H rod) and get a bait in the water. With the chance of 100lb tuna, 50 lb is about the minimum line class I would recommend. Two guys next to me get bit and as one passes by me tugging on his fish, my bait gets hammered. When I get him under control it feels like a good one and turns out to be in the 35 lb range. Bite definitely starts gaining some steam. It’s not long before the crew starts flying the double trouble bait rigs (2 sardines on 2 circle hooks) under the kite behind the stern. Fun stuff if you’ve never done it and at times the baits don’t even make it half way out before a tuna blows up on the sardines. Kind of like watching your bobber go underwater while fishing for bluegill only you’re using big 2 speed reels and circle hooks on 200 lb leaders.

I wouldn’t call the day wide open fishing but steady action from sunup until sundown. We go through a full kite rotation (everyone gets a chance to fly the kite!). Unfortunately all the kite fish are the same grade we are getting flylining. A school of skippies mix in with the tuna and are jumping on kite baits so the skipper shuts down the kite.

Most of us are being selective of what we tag and the smaller fish either released or given to crew or another passenger. From my log I estimate I kept 4 yfts (25-35 lbs), and released or gave away another 8 yfts and skippies. As the sun started to set I decided to land one more fish to end the day so I get serious about getting a bait out in the zone. We get a late evening hit of tuna but you needed to soak a good bait 50-70 yds back. After some patience, my bait gets hammered up by a good tuna and the fight is on. Unfortunately Tiburon is cruising around. Oh well…makes for some interesting photos. One bite and a 30 lb tuna is cut in half. Bryce and another passenger (Dave) hooked into the bigger yfts but both were lost. Ed landed big amber jack during the day. This was one of four new species of fish that I observed during our trip. The other 3 I did not get pictures of so they are still a mystery. No official fish count for Day 6 but its safe to say they were biting good and I think everyone got all the action they wanted. We have plenty of tuna so now its time to start working our way north and look for some more YT. San Pablo area will be our destination tomorrow.

Day 7 – San Pablo

We hit San Pablo bay highspots for about 50 yt in the 10-15 lb range. We try some other areas but don’t see any sign of YT. Since a couple boats are 1-2 days ahead of us, the others spots we could try have already been hit so Capt Joe opts to pass on these spots and we make way for Cedros Island. Sometime before midnight we are anchored up at Saint Augustin at the south end of Cedros. A few try their luck but there is no structure close by so it’s just mackerel and bonito.

Geared for Yellowtail

Day 8 – Cedros Island

My buddy Bryce put it best when he said he hated this part of the trip since it signaled that our trip was winding down. At least we had one more full day of fishing and we all planned on taking full advantage. Unfortunately the reports from other boats (RP and Indy) were not all that good but typically if you got a Cedros yellow it would be better than 20lbs and 30 lb typical.

Sunrise south end of Cedros Island.

As the sun rises we start fishing around working birds on the lee side of Cedros. In addition to yt, the 3 B’s mix in with the yellows so you never know what you’ll hook when you cast a bait or drop heavy iron to the bottom. 50 lb test is standard for this zip code cuz you’re the tails are quick to turn and burn back into some scary kelp and rocks. Bryce gets the hot hand in the morning by hooking and landing 6 tails, 2 of which are legit toads in the 30 lb range. He’s fishing a kelp cutter rig (short topshot of 65 lb flouro tied to spectra) on a Calstar rod and Accurate 2 speed. After having the great fortune for the last few days, my karma peters out and I can only manage the 3 Bs for the morning. We work the bird schools for a couple hours but the bite fades and we begin working to the north. On one drift we set up on a likely hali spot. Normie and I drop in a sardine on a dropper loop rigs and Norm’s bait doesn’t make it to the bottom before it gets hammered and its for sure no hali. After a short battle his fish is gaffed and it’s a yt in the 35 lb range. A short time later I finally get a keeper yellow but its not even close to the grade that Bryce and Normie.

Bryce with a 30 lb class yellowtail

Brian with a nice morning yellowtail

Norm with a 35lb class yellowtail.

We make it to the north end of Cedros where there is some good habitat for yellows but the RP and Indy are in the same area so our options are limited. We get into some big slimers but no yt. It looks like our trip is going to end with a whimper rather than a big whack on big yellers. Some start to break down rigs resigned to the end being near. Capt Joe decides on one last move back to where Norm and I got our yellows before we waive the white flag.

Not too much is happening at first but since this is our last stop and crew brails 4-5 big scoops of sardines. After about 15-20 minutes a couple passengers hook some toad yellows. The ones that are decked are all solid fish. One last chance at redemption so I grab my wahoo rig that I switched to a heavy bait rig (CS 700H, Trini 30, 50lb mono, 50lb fluoro leader, 4/0 ringed J hook). I get a good dine and make a long cast off the stern and wait. My bait swims right to a big waiting YT and its ON BABY!!! No doubt it’s a good one since my drag is pretty tight and its still pulling line but I turn him after some hard pulling. I put heavy pressure on the fish and feel big headshakes and tail beats so its definitely a homeguard…… and soon a big yellow is on the deck. The bite is going good so I grab my backup 50 lb rig but I think the drag was a bit too tight and I pull the hook on my next bite. I go back to my rods and pickup my first outfit. The leader seems to be in good shape so I cast out again and am rewarded with another toad yellow. Most of my buddies have given up fishing and are just watching from the cocktail sipping area but my hootin and hollering is too much for Bryce, I hear him curse me and he grabs his outfit and gets in on the tail end of the bite. When the bite finally shuts down and the sun sets we have about 30 of these toads on the deck and I have a BIG SMILE on my face. Very pleased with the sundowner bite.

Last day evening bite on 30 lb Cedros Island yellows.

As expected, Capt Joe says that’s the end of our trip and we will start heading home. Normally I would try to grab a quick shower before dinner and change into some dry clean clothes but I was too stoked so I settled for a beer with Bryce and others from my charter group as we all waited for our prime rib dinner.

Prime Rib dinner

Day 9 – Traveling Home

Although we could have probably fished a few more hours, Capt Joe said fishing was done and I didn’t hear too many complaints since we found fish just about everywhere we tried.

I spend the day cleaning reels, stripping off line, reading, and watching a few films. I am pleasantly surprised that the reels I used the most (Tor 20, Trini 30, Trini 40) have very little water inside and need minimal maintenance.

Last days dinner.

Dave, Alan, Bryce, John, Norm and Jeff enjoying a turkey dinner.

Day 10 – At the Dock

I would rate this as a very good trip. Much better than our previous 2 trips but missing numbers of wahoo and bigger tuna. Of course our very good trip was overshadowed by the catch made by the Royal Star and Red Rooster. I would have liked to have a shot at the bigger tuna but in retrospect, we still had plenty of fun with what we found and probably only about half of the 24 passengers were truly had the right gear and skills for pulling on big tuna. The rest were either newbies or had some very old gear than probably would have exploded on a 75lb tuna and a joke for pulling on cows.

I had a great time hanging with my charter group as always. We all caught up on things and had a great time fishing and passing time sipping adult beverages. Since this was an open charter, there were some new faces on board but we all had a good time and no issues with any knuckleheads. A few newbies to long range were on board and got the hang of things pretty quick and could not believe the incredible fishing.

Q105. On deck the crew was very good. Some of the deckhands were filling in for some of the regular crew so they may not have been familiar with how the Q105 works but they were all experienced deckhands from other boats and we lost very few fish to tangles. Food was awesome. We had major complaints last year but that lame cook is gone and Chris and Cappy are true chefs and lots of fun on deck. I took some pictures to show their work.

I don’t know the official fish count but its something like limits of yft, 200 yt, 5 wahoo, 1 amberjack, 100 dorado, 1 pinto bass, 2 marlin (released) and a handful of misc fish people kept. Lots of skippies, small yft, yt and 3 B’s released.

My count was limits of yft (15), 14 yt, 5 dorado. Released skippies, small yft and yt, 3 B’s and 1 small hoo. I kept a bit more fish than I normally do because of the lack of tuna last year and I may skip the 2009 trip next year due to conflicting work issues. Not to worry though…in place of the 10 dayer, I/we are seriously discussing a 15 dayer in early 2010. Poor me.

THE END!!

Baker Reels/Performance Tackle

We spent the day searching the ocean for porpoise and other signs of life.
We found plenty of life, however the tuna we were hoping to find never
materialized. We did see hundreds of giant squid feasting on a very large spot
of red crabs which was fairly unique. The conditions for looking were very good
and the weather continues to be beautiful. We are hoping to be back
to the catching part of the equation tomorrow we will keep you posted.
the crew of the Q105

Baker Reels/Performance Tackle

Our ride down was very nice and after a 2 days of travel everyone
was ready to wet their lines. We stopped on the ridge and were immediately
rewarded with a steady pick of tuna all day. The steady bite gave everyone a
chance to put some meat on the boat as well as provide the galley with some tasty
tuna for dinner. We are will be offshore tomorrow looking for some larger models.
 We will keep you posted

Great team work on the pre board line up you guys.

Day 8 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

The yellowtail fishing was pretty good at times as we drifted
over high spots along the baja coast.
The yoyo iron proved to be the most deadly method to capture our target species.
The weather has been outstanding all trip and that continued to be the case today.
We enjoyed a nice leisurely day of fishing and will be fishing more YT tomorrow.
the crew of the Q105

Day 7 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

Everywhere we go we seem to find an abundance of biting YFT.
The rocks bit good for us all day long.
The kite was providing everyone on the back deck some visual entertainment
as it was continually getting bit.
Cowboy even managed to catch what for him is a very rare kite fish.
By the end of the day everyone was pretty worn out from pulling on fish all day.
We are now going on the hunt for some YT.
We will be starting somewhere on the Baja coast tomorrow
and beginning our trek north.
the crew of the Q105

Day 6 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

After trying to get a few fish reports out there has been some technical
difficulties. Sorry for the delay. We had a great morning catching a bunch
of nice tuna 20-35lbs. It was consistent action all morning long before we
decided to head offshore in search of some paddys holding dorado and wahoo.
The kelp was abundant but was not holding a huge volume of fish.
we managed a couple wahoo and some dorado for the afternoon.
We will be at the rocks tomorrow morning.
the crew of the Q105

|Day 5 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

We spent the day looking offshore for bigger fish.
Much to our dismay we were unsuccessful.
We did however find a good spot of smaller fish on porpoise later in the day
to break up the long day of searching.
We also caught a couple 12 inch wahoo that were very cute they would have gone
perfect in a fish tank.
More tuna fishing will be on the agenda for tomorrow we will keep you posted.
the crew of the Q105

Day 4 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

It is always nice when you throw the anchor over in the dark and wake up to biting fish.
This was the case for today and the fish kept biting all day.
We had a great mix of YFT and YT. Everyone was yanking and cranking all day long.
With a bunch of fish on the boat we are headed south to see if
we can find some bigger ones.
Keep your fingers crossed for good weather and biting fish.
the crew of the Q105

Day 1&2 Boss/Cowboy/Ahi

Our ride down to the south was very nice. we have had flat seas and sunny skies
our entire trip and hope this continues. Today we spend the day kelping offshore.
We found an abundance of paddys along with these paddys was a huge amount of dorado.
We also captured a handful of wahoo. It hopefully is a sign of things to come
with nice weather the prospects of having a look down south are exciting.
We will be some where on the ridge tomorrow.
the crew of the Q105

any email from the boat. I called the boat and  everyone is having a great time, good weather and fishing.

As soon as we get up and running, we will update the fish report.

Thanks for your support.

QGirls

Today was our last day of fishing. We ended up on the beach for some yellowtail.
After stopping a couple of times for fish here and there we headed to the "big island
on the beach". We tried a few spots before we found the big fat yellows!!!
Everyone on the boat ended the trip with fish.
They were nice grade ones between 20 and 35 LBS.
Tomorrow we be traveling up the coast on our way back to San Diego
for our Sunday turn around, headed back out with Boss and Cowboys trips combined into one.
Till then the crew of the Q105 is out!!!

More tuna in wells today for us. We pulled the anchor after lunch and trolled for wahoo.
We captured a few then left the stones behind. We then looked for kelps, finding a few with
no fish. We will be on the beach in the morning to look for some yellowtail to top off
the fresh well tommorow, catch you then!!!!

SDSF/Atlaua 10 Day

Monday Nov. 10th

Today we tryed our luck at trolling for wahoo. We started out right at first light,
after a few hours we only scrached out a few and made a drift for some yellows.
Thats when Alan Springer hooked our current jackpot fish of the trip, a wahoo
that we estimated to be around 60 LBS!!!!!
He hooked it on 60 LB straight mono and after a run typical of a wahoo,
(up to the bow , back to the stern, then under the boat, saved with the Y)
he was able to land the nice fat skinnie!!
We are now headed west to the rocks for some tuna fishing,
we will let you know more tommorow, The Q 105 crew is out!!!

Nov. 9th SDSF/Atalua 10 Day

Wide open tuna and yellowtail fishing was our day. We awoke to tuna around the boat
and bitting. We put some in the well then pulled the anchor to try for some wahoo.
Not much luck there, we did get a couple but not what we hoped for so back on the anchor we
went. The rest of the day was as good of fishing that we could hope for. 20 to 30 lb tunas
for everyone!!!!! The yellows also bit good with us getting over 200 fish combined between
the 2 species. We will be in a new area tommorow so wish us luck, till then the crew of the
 Q105 out...

Nov. 8th SDSF/Atlaua 10 Day

Well we finally got to wet some lines after a couple days run south.
We started out on one of the high spots on the ridge today,
and it was fast and furious action from the time we dropped the pick untill dinner.
We ended the day with over 100 tuna and a fair amount of yellows.
They were bitting baits, dropper loops and best of all the surface iron!
We have a few guys on this trip that can cast a mile!
They treated all to a great surface bite with tuna and yellowtail fighting for the jigs,
it was fun to watch. We are spending one more day in this area before we decide what to do next,
so till tomorrow the Q105 is out!!!!

Nov. 7th SDSF/Atlaua 10 Day

Not much to report today as we were still headed south.
After a tackle siminar we made sure everyone is ready for battle with
whatever we find. Then it was a couple of movies, a nap (or 2) and Cris's pork loin dinner.
We have great weather and high hopes for tommorow, so till then, tight lines from the Q105 crew.

Nov. 6th SDSF/Atlaua 10 Day

Today we loaded the bait tanks with some nice sardines, and
cleared the point on our San Deigo fire dept 10 day. We spent
a little time getting some tackle ready. We will continue with more
of the same tommorow. A fantastic chicken dinner from cheif Cris then
a good nights sleep for all. We will be traveling down the coast tommorow,
making sure everyone is ready to go. Check back then, the Q 105 crew is out!!!!!

Great trip on Qualifier 105

I decided at John Klein’s request to take 1 more ride on the Q, kind of a final page in long range fishing for me . I took my first ride in the late 80’s and this was kind of turning the page for me.

My plan is to try and use my Alaska home as a summer home for a couple years, then make a permanent move when my wife retires. I will make dates available to Coastside so as once again the average Joe like myself can afford a real Alaska fishing trip for himself and family for no cost other than expensive similar to Tahsis.

I want to get back to the Q as it was a tremendous trip. I thought the Coastside company was grand, and as most long range trips the service was excellent.

The crew on these boats make the difference for me. The big boats all catch fish, and the food is always top shelf so it boils down to crew members.

The crew members the Q has now could not of been more helpful, respectful, and all around a great group of guys. If you combine that with all the tuna, dorado, and yellow tail you wanted to catch on flat water it just could not of been much better.

I was introduced to a TV series I had never seen by Paul Dixon it was called 24, and instantly became addicted and watched the first and second year of the show and was looking on e-bay to buy the 3rd season this morning.

So in closing I want to thank my old friend John for inviting me as his quest on this trip, and the Coastsiders that made it special.

Your Friend

Coastside Day 9

We spent the day fishing our way up the coast.  The weather was not very cooperative but luckily the YT were.  We had a steady pick of YT throughout the day.  Everyone more or less caught all the YT they wanted and were enjoying the fishing.  The deck crew was treated to a rare all crew  fishing contest in which the first crew member to deck a YT on the iron won a brand new Penn 24kg compliments of charter master Chris Hall.  The contest was fierce and required a come from behind victory from the red headed step child of the Q105. None the less Grant "Opie" Spoelstra  decked a YT before any of his fellow crew members.  A big thanks goes out to Chris Hall for providing the reel and entertainment that was enjoyed by all.  We will be continuing our way up the line in what looks to be windy weather.  We will keep you posted.

Coastside Day 8

We spent the day topping off our fish holds with YFT and YT.  It was good steady fishing with most of the YT coming on yo-yo jigs and the YFT coming on fly lined baits.  We spent the afternoon trying to find some skin. We were moderately successful in our search landing a few nice ones on the troll and on the bomb.  The weather kicked up a little on us so cross your fingers for us that the ride up will be nice.  We will be fishing some where up the Baja coast tomorrow.

the crew of the Q105

p.s. Uncle rick Gail out fished the boys again

Coastside Day 7

We had a nice relaxing day catching a wide variety of fish.  We caught everything from pargo to YFT using every method from dropper loop to yummy fliers.  The wind and swell have come up a bit but nothing to bad.  We are hoping to have more of the same tomorrow with hopefully a few more wahoo mixed in.

Coastside Day 6

Coastside Day 5

WE found what we were looking for biting YFT!! they are a beautiful grade of fish running from 25-35 lbs. The action was consistent all day and made for an entertaining day of fishing. W are hoping for more of the same tomorrow. The weather is still hot with a little more breeze then yesterday.

Coastside Day 4

We spent our day hunting around offshore looking for some better grade tuna and wahoo.  Unfortunately, we did not find what were looking for.  We are now going to work our way to a much more plentiful YFT area with the hopes of finding some biting fish. The weather is hot and sunny with a little breeze and beautiful sea conditions.

Coastside Day 3

We spent the day working our way south by paddy hopping our way down the Baja coast.  The paddies were plentiful (almost to plentiful at times) and very large.  We had consistent action all day long on wahoo, dorado, and YFT.  The weather was beautiful with grease flat sea conditions.  We will be taking advantage of the gorgeous weather by once again hunting around offshore.  We will keep you posted

Coastside Day 2

We are enjoying very good weather on our annual Coastside fishing club 10 day fishing trip. We are rolling south to get ourselves in good position for the rest of the trip.  After a day of travel today we spent a couple hours fishing around Cedros for a couple YT and some Calicos.  With this gorgeous weather we are looking forward to hunting around offshore a little.  We will keep  you posted.

Season’s First Cows

Joe Crisci brought Qualifier 105 home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 24 after the first trip of the new big fish season to the Hurricane Bank. His 23 anglers on the Rusty Hook Charter (owner Alex Masumoto was chartermaster) bagged 21 cows, or tuna over 200 pounds. They caught so many tuna the boat left the bank two days early (the trip was scheduled for 15 days) with the fish holds filled. A stop at Cedros Island on the way up provided just enough yellowtail to fill the spaces between the cows.

“Awesome,” said Crisci at the dock. “It was everything we dreamt it could be, and more. Sometimes every fish hanging was big. The weather was good the whole trip. The water on the bank was 79.5 degrees.

“There was some bait there, but we only fished the three days during the daylight. Everybody recovered at night. We had plenty of bait. We stopped fishing with the kite because we ran out of manpower.

“The best current for us was running southwest. There were times,” remembered the skipper, “when you’d look back behind the boat and it looked like we were in gear, from all the swirls behind us.”

Dan Sunderland of San Marcos won first place for a 255.9-pound yellowfin.

“I had to yell for the backup rod,” said Dan, “after he got me down to 25 wraps or so. He beat me up for three and a half hours. He went around the boat seven times.”

Sunderland said he fished a sardine on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook on 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra backing. He fished with a Qualia 30 reel that he won on the trip, and a Fenwick six-foot rod.

Jim Bailey of Lemon Grove won second place for a 247-pounder that fought him for an hour and a half. He plopped a chunk in the tuna-infested water on a 16/0 Eagle Claw hook, and used 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Berkley Spectra on a Tiagra 50 reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXH rod.

Terry Hite of Solvang got a 218 and a 224.1-pounder, and the bigger fish won third place. He said he fished a sardine on a 9/0 Super Mutu ringed hook. He fished with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Line One Spectra on an Avet 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Hot on Hite’s heels came Phil Lisi of Costa Mesa, with a 224.1-pound tuna, and a 216. He said he fished a chunk on a 9/0 ringed Super Mutu hook tied to 130-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Izorline Spectra backing, on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

John Comerford had a 217 and a 223-pounder. He baited sardines on a 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hook. He used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 130-pound Big Game line with 130-pound Line One Spectra on a Penn 50 W reel and a Seeker Black Steel 6463 XXXH rod.

Robert Rubalcaba of Pt. Loma caught a 218-pounder with a chunk on a 12/0 Mustad hook tied to 130-pound Soft Steel Ultra line, a Penn 50 VSX reel modified by Ken’s Custom Reels in Oceanside, and a Calstar 760 XH rod.

Mike Spagnola of Staten Island had a 201 and a 215-pounder. He used a sardine on an 8/0 Eagle Claw hook, with 130-pound Big Game line on a Tiagra 50 reel and a Calstar 760 H rod.

Gerald Yoshida of San Pedro bagged a 214 and a 211-pound tuna on sardines. He fished with 5/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks on 130-pound Yo-Zuri line and 130-pound Izorline Spectrra backing on a Penn 50 W reel and a Calstar 655 XXH rod.

Wes Cerny of Fallbrook whipped a pair at 211 and 214 pounds. Sardines did the trick, on 8/0 Eagle Claw hooks. He said he fished with 130-pound Yo-Zuri line and 130-pound Berkley Spectra on a Penn 50 VSX reel and a Super Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

Bill Hale of Thousand Oaks found a 209 and a 213-pound tuna. Sardines were his preferred bait, on 7/0 ringed Super Mutu hooks. He fished with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izor Spectra on an Accurate 50 W reel and a Calstar 6460 XXH rod.

Bruce Sogioka of Fullerton found a 206-pound yellowfin with a chunk on an 8/0 Hayabusa hook he tied to 130-pound Soft Steel line on a Penn 70 reel and a Calstar 655 XH rod, and finished the job in a half-hour.

Chartermaster Alex Masumoto hauled in a 205.9-pounder on a 12/0 Mustad 39965 hook baited with a sardine. He used 130-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader, 100-pound Izorline and 130-pound Izorline Spectra backing on a Shimano TTS 50 reel and a Calstar 7460 XH rod.

Steven Smith of Sierra Vista brought in a 201 and a 205-pounder. He fished with sardines and 8/0 Eagle Claw hooks. He used 100-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Tuff Line Spectra on a Tiagra 50 reel and a Seeker 6463 XXXH rod.

 Rusty Hook 15 Day 3

We have found what we are looking for!  We found biting big fish!  There are a lot of big fish with and we are enjoying the action after driving for literally days.  Everyone is catching their share and giving it all they got on the rail.  The hours of rigging a nd tackle prep have paid off as we have lost a very minimal amount of fish.  Everyone will be sleeping good tonight and have some sore muscles in the morning.  Hopefully the bite stays hot for us if it does there is a good chance we are gonna plug the boat. We will keep you posted

Rusty Hook 15 Day 2

We arrived at the Bank today.  We found a few skin and a lot of seiners  We managed to scratch away at a couple of tuna but are planning on making a move to fish around Clarion. The weather is nice but the fish do not seem to want to cooperate.  We will be heading to the Clarion buffer zone and will keep you posted. The crew of the Q105

Rusty Hook 15 Day 1

We have spent the past couple days traveling and still have a couple more to go before we reach our final destination the Hurricane Bank.  Everyone is relaxing in between rigging sessions and are enjoying the cruise down .  We are eagerly awaiting our opportunity to get a line wet.  The weather seems to be coming down a little everyday and we are hoping that the trend continues for the next few days.  We will post when we get there if the satellite cooperates.

the crew of the Q105

Sorry for the delay we were experiencing some technical difficulties with our satellite system.  Here is the scoop, we had phenomenal trip of a life time style fishing for the three days we were at the Hurricane Bank.  We pulled into the bank the first day and trolled up a nice score of wahoo before getting the anchor down to get to the business of capturing some BIG tuna.  The tuna started biting immediately after we got the anchor down and soon we had a bunch of heavies going.  The action continued nonstop into the dark.  Live bait and chunking were equally effective.  There were points throughout all three days we everyone on the boat had a big one either going or laying on the deck.  A well stuffing amount of fish came over the rail for three days straight before we finally ran out of room to put any more big tuna.  After spending some time topping off our wells with wahoo and we are headed north.  All of our wells are stuffed with tuna and wahoo.  We are planning on relaxing and slowly fishing our way home.  This trip has been phenomenal and everyone on board will be talking about it for a long time to come.  We will keep you posted as we fish our way home.

Wednesday Oct. 15

Skiff Trip Day 2

Well today we were at an island off Baja with hopes of bettering yesterday. We were not disappointed!!!! The day started out with the guys in the kayaks getting in the water at first light, the skiffs right behind them. Right of the Bart we started hooking bass. We also had shots at yellow tail. This is a light load of anglers so the big boat was 2 passengers and the crew fishing!!! As close to a crew trip as you can get. The chiefs were on the rail all day long (they only left the rail to make us all a little fatter!!!) We are now headed south to look for some yellow tails, wish us luck! till tomorrow the crew of the Q105 OUT!!!

Skiff Trip Day 1

Whats up? Today was our first day of fishing on our 6 day skiff, kayak, mother-ship trip. What a day it was!!! We started out at Sac reef, getting in a full day of fishing till your thumbs were raw! We had a great day of weather, and best of all fishing. The size of bass was outstanding, with most fish from 4 to 6 lbs, and quit a few bigger up to 8.5 lbs. Cory San den of MC swim baits is our charter master. He handed out goodie bags to everone, swimbaits, leadheads and best of all an 8 inch jerkbait that is the best!!! The best way to fish them was to hook them weedless, toss em on the kelp and start twiching em. The bass would fly out of the kelp to eat them!!!! We all got many bass this way, also on swimbaits and just about anything that we tossed. Headed south, till tomorrow the Q105 OUT!!!

976 Tuna Day 5

We spent the day looking around offshore but did not find much of interest.  We managed to round up one YFT, a bunch of skipjack and saw one very large whale.  The weather came up a little from the normal glass we have been blessed with this year.  We will be back in SD tomorrow.  A big thanks goes out to Larry Brown for another great charter.  He does an excellent job making sure everyone is well taken care of and always has tons of goodies from a variety of different sponsors.

976 Tuna Day 4

We experienced typical scratchy Guadalupe fishing today.  We fished hard all day and our anglers definitely cashed in on their opportunities to put some nice fish on the boat.  These nice fish include a 40 lb YT by Larry Rosenberg and a pair of telephone pole wahoo captured by Dave Klein and Lonnie Raney.  We had a few hot flurries of action to reward the persistence of our anglers and we ended up with a nice mixed bag of fish.  The sharks never became a major issue only munching a few of our fish.  The weather was hot and sunny.  We are hoping to find some more tuna tomorrow.

976 Tuna Day 3

We experienced some of the hottest YT fishing of the season this morning.  Pretty much everyone was bit all the time for 3 or 4 hours straight.  Everyone will definitely be sleeping well tonight and there are going to be a few sore arms and backs for the rest of the trip.  After loading up on a nice grade of YT we headed offshore in search of a kelp patty.  Though the kelps were few and far between we did manage to scratch up a handful of nice Dorado.  We also had a few handfuls of 15-20 lb YFT on blind jig strikes.  One of the standout moments of the day was Kim Rosenberg landing a 22lb YFT on 20 lb. test. Quite a feat for a second time long-ranger.  With our RSW well quickly filling we are headed to Guadalupe to try to add some nice YFT to our catch.  We will keep you posted.

976 Tuna Day 2

We rolled south in beautiful weather and arrived at our destination late in the afternoon.  We managed to wrestle up quite a few YT.  The seals were causing a bit of a problem but we managed to keep the bite going by using Salas jigs compliments of charter master Larry who brought one for everyone on board (Thank you Salas).  We fished until dark and are planning on heading south to another hot YT zone. We are hoping for an action packed day tomorrow.

the crew of the Q105

Accurate Day 5

THEY WANT MORE 2009 6 DAYS WITH JACK CAN YOU STAND IT?

We spent the morning picking away at YFT.  We managed to put another couple handfuls of fish in the well including a couple nice YT.  The sharks were a problem mid morning and we lost a few nice fish to them.  We are on our way back to San Diego in greasy calm weather.  A big thanks goes out to Accurate reels for putting together another great charter and for all the great giveaways.  We will be turning around tomorrow for another 5 day fishing adventure.

Accurate Day 4

We arrived at the scenic island of Guadalupe with high hope of finding some biting tuna fish.  After a look around we found good sign of life and got the pick down.  The fishing was typical for Guadalupe a slow pick most of the day with the anglers who put in the most rail time reaping the benefits of there persistence.  We had one flurry of red hot action that kept the day interesting.  All in all it was a nice day of fishing with most anglers getting one or two fish.  The tax man periodically paid us a visit and took his cut of our catch (just ask Lisa who lost two nice YFT in consecutive casts the the big grinner).  The dynamic duo of Steve Johnson and Paul Everts won the Accurate reel jackpot of the day for 1st fish over 30lbs and biggest fish of the day.  Their prizes were an Accurate 665H and a Accurate 870 narrow.  A big thanks to Accurate Reels and Jack for the great daily Jackpot giveaways.

Accurate Day 3

Our day started out very early and very good.  We had an phenomenal 4AM bite that lasted well past sun up.  The YT were up and around all day and we put together a terrific day.  Keith Byrne won a WFO tackle box compliments of Accurate Reels for being the first angler to land his limit of YT.  With a full RSW of YT we are headed to Guadalupe and are hoping for more great fishing tomorrow.

Accurate Day 2

We spent the day fishing our way south.  We found very small fish and after a lot of shaking we decided to to get to the YT grounds.  There was good sign of life around but we didn't manage to get the fish really going.  We are hoping that tomorrow our fortunes will improve.  The weather is gorgeous and with all the life we saw today we are very optimistic that tomorrow the fish will bite.

B&G Hay Day 5

We spent our last morning hunting for Yellow Fin Tuna around Guadalupe.  We had moderate success in the few hours we had to look around and wrestled up a few handful from the depths. The tuna were a nice grade around 18-30 lbs.  We are now headed north in beautiful weather and will be turning around tomorrow on the Accurate 5 Day.

B&G Hay Day 4

After some looking around in the morning we soon had the YT located and biting.  By around lunch time we had all the YT we wanted and were heading off shore to do some looking around.  We did not see much at all offshore and are heading to Guadalupe with hopes of finding some biting tuna fish tomorrow.  Wish us luck we will keep you posted.

B&G Hay Day 3

We were fortunate enough to wake up to biting YT directly under the boat.  This set the tempo for the day as we had a steady pick all day with flurries of wide open fishing mixed in.  We had a great day on a great grade of YT when everything was said and done.  The weather is perfect and we are loving it.  We will be making some bait tonight wish us luck.

B&G Hay Day 2

We spent the majority of the day traveling south.  When we finally arrived at our destination we captured a small sampling of YT.  Hopefully this is a small sampling of things to come. We will be up nice and early hunting for more YT  The weather was great on the way down and we are hoping for more of the same.  Stay tuned for tomorrows report.

Barnett Day 5

We worked our way north looking for kelp and any other sign of fish as we went.  We found plenty of kelp, unfortunately the grade of fish that the kelp was holding was for the most part tiny.  We managed a few tagable fish and enjoyed perfect conditions in terms of weather. We will be back to San Diego tomorrow morning leaving on a 1.5 day tomorrow night.

Barnett Day 4

Our morning did not start off as planned.  Between the pelicans, barracuda and bonito our bait never really had a chance to get to the YT.  However, after a couple of moves we managed to locate a school of YT on the chew. The YT were all beautiful grade and mean as ever.  To go along with the YT we were fortunate enough to add another WSB to our RSW well. The WSB once again fell victim to the surface iron.  We enjoyed and hearty lasagna dinner on the anchor and are currently heading north to kelp our way home.

Barnett Day 3

We spent the day fishing around Cedros for some great YT action.  At times the  Bonito and log barracuda were tough to get through but the nice YT made it worthwhile.  We also managed a very nice 35 lb WSB which is always a welcome surprise.  The YT were eating all forms of fishing and the WSB fell victim to a surface iron. We are planning on fishing around this area tomorrow.

Barnett Day 2

We woke up this morning in beautiful weather heading south with high hopes of arriving early at our destination of Benitos.  We got an early start and and downhill push got us there with plenty of fishing time.  We immediately got into a nice spot of premium grade YT.  It was a perfect way to start a trip and the quality of the YT was an added bonus.  We are planning on doing more of the same tomorrow.  Weather is gorgeous.

08-04-08

The YT fishing continued to be very good today.  So good in fact the biggest foamer of YT, about the size of a football field, any of us had ever seen came up behind the boat today.  It was so impressive it made even the most seasoned angler's jaw drop it amazement. The weather continues to be more or less flat calm.  We are headed north and are planning on fishing our way home.

08-03-08

We spent the day fishing around Cedros Island.  The YT fishing was very good as usual and the weather was gorgeous.  The grade of YT is 18-30 lbs.  With more gorgeous weather on the schedule we are hoping for more of the same tomorrow.  We will keep you posted.

the crew of the Q105

08-02-08

We spent the day working our way south by jumping from kelp to kelp.  We had red hot Dorado fishing on most of the kelps we found.  We also had a handful better YT to go along with the Dorado a cast action.  The great weather was just the cherry on top of a great day of fishing.  We are headed south to Cedros and will be there bright and early.  Wish us luck...we will keep you posted

07-29-08

We departed today on our annual 72 hour Lets Talk Hook Up fishing extravaganza.  With the possibility of getting some quality fishing time in on the first afternoon of the trip everyone was pretty excited to get out to the fishing grounds.  Before we knew it we had our trollers in the water and soon enough we had our first jig stop of the trip.  Our jigs fooled one albacore and another fell victim to a well presented bait.  One of the albacore happened to be the first albacore ever caught by one our anglers and much to the delight of passengers and crew the heart was soon being gobbled up.  It is common knowledge that if one does not eat the heart of the first albacore he/she ever catches that particular angler will never catch another albacore again. With blood on the deck and fish in our well everyone is in great spirits.  We tracked down a paddy right at dusk with a few shaker Dorado to get us warmed up for tomorrow.  We plan to do some serious kelping tomorrow so we will keep you posted.

The crew of the Q105

07-28-08

Today we spent the day fishing our way home.  We found some beautiful kelp loaded with bright blue and geen dorado.  The fishing was wide open and at times it seemed like a good idea to make cups, pads, and face masks a requirement to prevent the dorado from smacking us silly.   The grease flat weather continued and made for ideal conditions.  It was a great trip and a big Qualifier thank you goes out to Coastside Fishing Club for putting together another great trip.  WE will be turning around tomorrow on a three day trip....wish us luck...Q Posse out

07-27-08

The amazing fishery that is Cedros Island once again produced a great day of quality YT fishing.  Warm sunny weather and a heavy yellow on the end of your line was the standard for the day.  After loading up on YT we began our trek north and are hoping to locate some tuna of any variety tomorrow.  The weather rolling up is gorgeous and we are having a great time.  We will keep you posted as to what we find. Thanks for the vine thanks for the time.....

the crew of the Q105

07-26-08

We spent the day offshore hunting around for kelps in beautiful weather.  We soon found a line of kelps that was holding fish and it was game on.  Once again the variety of fish that these kelps are holding is great.  We captured YFT, YT and Dorado all mixed together on the kelps.  Fernando Perez won a brand new fishing rod by boating the first YT this morning.  We are headed south to Cedros to try and locate some larger YT. We will keep you posted....wish us luck.

07-25-08

We departed San Diego on our annual Coastside fishing charter in good weather with high hopes of the good offshore fishing continuing.  This morning we woke up with good fishing conditions and were soon looking for the magic kelp paddy to load up on.  Unfortunanatly we never really connected on the right kelp.  We found plenty of them but could never get the fish really going.  We still scratched up a decent catch of YT and added a couple albacore to our RSW well as well, but never really found the hot kelp.  Marc Gorelnik won a beautiful rod by boating the firsdt albacore on bait.   We will be kelping and tuna fishing again tomorrow and are hoping to find the right kelp.

the crew of the Q105

07-24-08

We had our sights set on adding more tuna to our RSW well and were fairly successful in doing so.  We managed to scratch out a day of Albacore, YFT, and BFT with a couple Dorado and a standout 33 lb YT.  Once again the cedar plug turned out to be the red hot trolling lure of the day consistently stopping the boat all day.  The variety of species and consistent action we experienced on this trip was second to none and we are looking forward to more of the same in our upcoming trips.  A BIG thank you goes out to the LA Rod and Reel club for putting together a great charter.  We turn around tomorrow and will be right back hopefully to more of the same.

07-23-08

Once again the fishing and the weather did not disappoint.  Although we did not have quite the variety of yesterday we had great fishing on YT to 25 lbs and YFT to 28lbs.  The hot trolling lure today was the cedar plug.  The YFT simply could not resist eating the cedar plug.  The long fin didn't cooperate for us but we are hoping to change that tomorrow.  The YFT in the area are a gorgeous grade of fish.   We will keep you posted.

the crew of the Q105

07-22-08

The great weather and action packed fishing continued today.  We had terrific action on a mixed bag of jumbo albacore to 40 lbs, YT  to 25 lbs, YFT to 28 lbs, and some Dorado and BFT sprinkled on top.  There is a lot of life around and everyone is having a blast casting a line into the smorgasbord of fish.  Several of our anglers caught four different species today.  It really is a grab bag of quality fish.  We are hoping the weather stays gorgeous and we will be looking hard tomorrow to stay with these fish.

We will keep you posted.

the crew of the Q105

07-21-08

We departed San Diego on Saturday afternoon on the annual LA Rod and Reel charter.  We headed south eager with anticipation of the up coming fishing adventure.  Before we knew it we found ourselves in terrific water and managed to land a handful of very nice Dorado before the sun set on our first day.  We woke up this morning in some very fishy water.  We started the day off with a flurry of school size YT from a kelp paddy.  Our good fortune continued throughout the day as we carved out an action packed day on mixed tuna to go with our YT.  Sam Rubinfeld won the YT jackpot today and Jamie Smith was pronounced victor in the tuna fish jackpot.  Everyone had a great day catching a mixed bag of jumbo Albacore, nice YFT and YT.  We are anticipating our fantastic weather to continue and looking forward to tracking down some tuna fish tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed that the Longfin come up good for us tomorrow.

07-12-08

The day started out with a flurry of biting albacore and it didn't stop there.  We had consistent stops throughout the day on albacore and BFT.  There is great sign of life in the area and we had a terrific day catching tuna.  Charter master Dennis Hagarty once again had the biggest fish of the day a 47 lb blue fin. To go along with our outstanding tuna fishing we had a handful of Dorado and YT.  The weather it is absolutely gorgeous out here and the tuna are biting... life is good.  We are looking forward to more of the same tomorrow.  We will keep you posted.

the crew of the Q105

07-11-08

We arrived at Guadalupe at sunrise with high hopes of finding some biting fish.  After giving the island a good look over we saw decent sign of fish but the current did not want to cooperate.  However, all was not for naught, Dennis Hagarty still managed to capture a hefty 59 lb YFT and Mark Chilton added another YFT to our count weighing in at 51 lbs.  Unfortunately, this was all we could manage but there seemed to be some fish in the area.  We are heading north to see if we can add to our tuna total.  The weather is absolutely perfect, flat calm, not to hot not to cold but like baby bears porridge its just right.  We are having a blast and have high hopes for tomorrow.  We will keep you posted.

Hello Q105 long range anglers. We left Friday on our Boss Hag / Brawler Boys open 5 day trip. After loading a load of bait we headed off shore in search of the long fin tuna. We headed out to were some other boats had been getting em. When we got to the area we found alot of boats due to the 4th of July long weekend. We scratched out a good number of them. We then headed south to central Baja to fish for a few nice fat yellowtail. Most of our anglers ended up with at least a few. These yellows are fat and mean! They will test an anglers skills and tackle as well as any fish in the ocean. With a good count of them we are headed back up north to see if we can't find some more of the albies. One fish of note was first time long range fisherman, Tim Platten's 35 lb hallibut! Also, capt Joe's cousin Dino Berardino is on board and he hooked a nice flatfish only to have it stollen by a big fat sealion. We watched as the thief shook this thing around right in front of us and enjoyed his free lunch. Till tomorrow Joe, Brook, both Travis 1and 2, Tim, Cappy and Cris

Shirer 8 Day Day 6

Today we continued to fish our way north and had a nice relaxing day.  We picked away all day at 30 lb. plus Yellowtail.  To go along with the beautiful Yellows, Bob Douglas and Doug Nance also managed to wrestle 2 nice Broomtail Grouper from the depths on the yoyo jigs weighing in at 72(Doug's) and 56 lbs(Bob's) .  We enjoyed terrific weather once again and had a great day picking away at trophy Yellowtail.  We hope to do more of the same tomorrow and are looking forward to possibly adding a few nice Halibut to our cornucopia of a catch.  We all will be going to bed again with a full belly thanks to Chris and Cappy's homemade Lasagna.  till tomorrow....

Shirer 8 Day Day 5

We began our journey north by fishing our way up the baja coast.  We found clouds of sand bass and shoals of bait as far as the eye could see.  Unfortunately, we couldn't find our target species ,WSB and YT, but we are still enjoying absolutely gorgeous weather.  Chris and Cappy are keeping everyone fat and happy with delicious meal after delicious meal.  We are hoping to enjoy more catching tomorrow.  We will be keeping you posted.  Keep your fingers crossed for the so far elusive long finned tuna fish.

Shirer 8 Day Day 4

As we worked our way south we finally found what we were looking for a wide open bite.  We located a school of YT that really wanted to bite and soon we were in a limit style frenzy.  The fish were chewing on the iron, fly line bait and dropper loop.It was tremendous fishing on a nice grade of fish from 18 to 35 lbs.  We are still enjoying sunny skies and a grease flat ocean.  Everyone will sleep good tonight after a day of pulling on nice yellows.  We enjoyed a delicious steak dinner and are looking forward to more coastal fishing tomorrow.  We also caught a couple of mystery jacks some of the boat says Amoco jack (I think thats the spelling) others say amber jack. Any ways we will keep you posted on what we find tomorrow.

Shirer 8 Day Day 3

Today we continued south to what we hope will be the hot zone.  We looked around the coast today but only managed a few YTs.  The weather is still perfect which is always a bonus.  We are having a great time and eager to get into a hot bite.  We have high hopes for tomorrow and are chomping at the bit to put the wood to some YT.  We will keep you posted.

Shirer 8 Day Day 2

The morning started out with the boat being socked in with thick fog.  This put a damper on our early morning search but the fog eventually gave way to another beautiful day.  We found signs of life and kelp paddies in bunches but did not have much luck in the capturing department. We scratched up a few YFTs and a handful of 20 lb. YTs.  We continued south as we searched and are really enjoying some amazing weather.  We are hoping to get into some good coastal Baja YT fishing tomorrow.  We will keep you posted.

Shirer 8 Day Day 1

We departed San Diego in the sweltering heat and everyone was eager to get offshore to a much more pleasant temperature.  We spent the afternoon motoring south and looking for the elusive long fin tuna.  We were unable to locate any biting fish and are continuing our journey south in beautiful weather.  We will spend tomorrow offshore hunting around to see what we can turn up.

Until then...

Woman Scores Hurricane Cow

The Loftus & Martin open charter aboard the Qualifier 105 returned to Pt. Loma Sportfishing at dawn January 20. Joe Crisci was skipper on the 16-day excursion, which produced three cow tuna and numerous fish on the cusp of the 200-pound marker, as well as a good take of wahoo.

The best tuna was caught by Tom Kelleher of Corona del Mar, a 241.6-pound tusker that chowed on a double sardine kite rig and the boat’s loaner gear for the purpose.

“It took an hour and 15 minutes,” said Tom. “I saw it hit, then the balloon marker came off. He took me from the stern corner up to the bow on the other side. He’s my second-best fish ever. I could tell my gear was maxed.”

Second skipper Cal Link said Tom’s boat rig had two 9/0 Eagle Claw circle hooks on 100-pound Big Game line and 130-pound Big Game Spectra, an Accurate 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XH rod.

Chris Green of Riverside won second place for a 215.2-pounder he got with a mackerel on a 9/0 Eagle Claw hook. He said he used 100-pound Maxima line and 100-pound Spectra on a Penn 50 reel and a Calstar 6465 XH rod.

“He kicked my behind,” said Chris.  “He’s my biggest fish.”

Jackie Fitzpatrick of Pacific Grove won third place for her first cow, a 211.6-pound yellowfin she bagged with the double sardine rig on the same boat outfit used by Kelleher to get the jackpot winner. She also got a tuna that weighed 194 pounds, and the trip’s best wahoo, a 70-pounder that won an award.

“He jumped out of the water and onto the bait,” Jackie said of the bigger tuna. “Then he took off right away. I’m saving up to do this again next year.”

Qualifier 105 will be in port for her annual boat work over the next few weeks, said skipper Joe Crisci.

Friday, 1/18/08:  Today was a travel day. We did a few chores to get the boat ready for some time off. The passengers finished breaking down and cleaning all their gear and tackle. Then it was movies, poker, and  a nap or two. Dinner was prime rib. This trip the food has just gotten better everyday!! Cappy and Cris put a few pounds on everyone, time to hit the gym when we get home. As for our e.t.a to Point Loma it looks like an early one, probably around 5:30 A.M. (I think the red shirts that help us out so much at the dock want us in early so they can get home for the Chargers game at noon!!) Crew member Tim would like to wish his dad, Dennis up in Chico a happy birthday, see you Sunday afternoon!  For now that's it, Q105 crew Joe, Cal, Travis L, Tim, Travis J, Cappy and Cris

Thursday, 1/17/08:  Not much to report today, we are headed up the line for home. We would again like to thank our charter masters John Loftus and Larry Martin. These guys put a lot of time and energy into getting these trips together. With the many give-a-ways and products for all, it truly is a lot of work.  Thanks guys and we can't wait for next year! As for the anglers on this trip, with a few new faces and the ones we have fished with before, thanks for coming and we hope to see all of you again next season. If you would like to join them, call the office soon, as this trip is very popular, and will surely sell out. Also, make your plans now to visit the Fred Hall show in Long Beach this March. We will have our booth set up, so come on by and say hello.  Owner John Klein, Capt. Joe Crisci, the Q girls and most, if not all of the crew, will be hanging out, so stop by our booth and book a trip with us for the 2008 season. See you there!!! Till tomorrow Q105 crew out!

Wednesday, 1/16/08:  First let's start with the last day of fishing for the trip. We woke to tuna around the boat as well as some wahoo. The tuna bit pretty good. They were not huge but that was ok. The size was about 40-60 lbs. Charter master John Loftus got one about 100 lbs. Larry Martin also scored a nice one, along with John Fike and Dan Sunderland. We also put a few more wahoo on the boat. We even got a couple on the kite. Overall, this was a great trip with EVERYONE catching plenty of fish. Our totals for the trip were as follows:  Wahoo 95, Tuna 98, with 4 of those going over 200lbs and a few that are close. We will weigh them at the dock to find out. A very nice load of fish overall. Charter masters John Loftus and Larry Martin would like to thank Maxima Line Co. for the line that was used by all on this trip free of charge! Also, Catchy Tackle for the supply of wahoo bombs and jigs that worked like a charm, with many of the skinnies coming on them. The Loftus and Martin Special 15 day is already on the schedule for next year, January 10th through the 25th. These guys are great, lots of fantastic give-a-ways including line, rods, reels and lots of other goodies. You can secure a spot on this very popular and fun-filled trip with a $200 deposit, this trip will fill up so call now. Just call Marie or Vicki at the office, 619-223-2786 and tell them you would like to go. The crew would like to thank our charter masters for booking with us as it keeps us working and they are just fun and nice guys to spend a little over 2 weeks with!!!!! Now a few days of R&R on the way home, we will be home Sunday morning, just in time to watch the Chargers add a little thunder and lighting to New England's snow storms. See ya, Q105 out!!!!

Tuesday, 1/15/08:  More of the same today, kind of slow on the tuna, but the wahoo saved the day!!!!  We trolled again in the morning for some more nice skins, Vince Hannan was on fire getting 2 for 2 (2 fish 2 stops) in a row. The rest of the gang decided to nick name him "skinny Vinnie" and since he is a good sport, it was a running joke today. Also today after we got the anchor back down, Jackie Fitzpatrick hooked a nice fish on her tuna gear, straight mono and landed a wahoo we guessed to be around 70 lbs!! With only one more day of fishing this trip has not disappointed. Till tomorrow Q 105 crew out!!!!  GO CHARGERS!!

Monday, 1/14/08:  Another great day on the bank. This morning started out kind of slow, so we pulled the pick and went in search of fish. Capt. Joe did it again -- Wahoo. We trolled up some more skinnies and looked around for a couple more hours before dropping it back down. This afternoon was a little slow, but some more nice tuna were pulled over the rail. Big fish of the day, Jim Kirk with one that taped 172 lbs. This fish was mean, so mean that he ended up breaking his rod when the fish was at color! Luckily his fishing line did not, so with a 3-foot rod he was able to land this bad @** fish!!!!!! With 2 more days of fishing, hopes are high and the weather is good. So till tomorrow Q105 crew out!

Sunday, 1/13/08:  WAHOO!!!!!! Today we pulled the anchor and trolled up some wahoo, 21 of them in a couple of hours. Everyone on board has at least one. When we got the anchor back down we picked at the tuna. A few over 100 lbs and more wahoo on the pick made for some great action today. We have put together a very nice trip and everyone is having a blast. The weather is nice and the food, well the food is worth the price of a trip alone!!!!!!Gotta go, Q105 crew out!!!!

Saturday, 1/12/08:  Today started out with wahoo, about a dozen of them before 8am. After that it was a steady pick on the tuna with just a few more of the skins. Hot stick today, Allen Lemburg with a 90 lbr on 40 lb test!! Then he got one about 160 on the big rig. For the most part, other than that today was all small fish but everyone had fun on the light tackle. A couple of hellos from the boat. John Fike says Hello Marcy I'm having a great time with papa Loftus, miss you lots. Dan Sunderland says hi to Cindy, we're having a great time and the weather is great, miss you, see you soon. Also, HI BRE (from you know who).

Friday, 1/11/08: Another great day was had by the Q105 today. Vince Hannan started the day with a 120 lb tuna. From there it only got better. Dan Sunderland 100 lbs, Dallas Smith 140lbs, Jerry Green 90,170 lbs, Jackie Fitzpatrick had a great day with a 185 and a 213. Irish Kane 150,165, John Loftus 90, John Fike 90,110 and 140, Phil Lisi (one of our regular passengers with 1.5, (2)-5 days, 10 day and 16 day trips with us just in 2007!!!!!) with 150 and 160 pounders. Big fish of the day goes to Beth Smith 221, and Tom Kelleher 225! Beth used her raffle-won rod, a custom wrapped seeker 6460 xxh. Thanks goes out to Smitty G for the wrap jobs on the rods!!! With more raffles to come, everybody wants to win one of those rods. This trip is already on the books for 2009, check our schedule and call the Q girls in the office to reserve a spot. $200 will get you on and it should be another great trip!!!!!! More tomorrow, Q105 crew out!!!!!!!!

Thursday, 1/10/08: Well, what a difference a day and location makes. Today, we fished the Hurricane Bank and it was one of those days you go looooong range fishing for. We started early off with a few Wahoo on the troll and then dropped anchor. It was not long before once again (the hot stick of the trip so far), John Loftus hooked and landed a very nice tuna. After that it was a steady pick all afternoon. Just before dark, Chris Green hooked and landed the biggest fish so far. After about 2 hours, and with everyone cheering him on, he landed one that taped 202! The quote of the day was also made by Chris. After about 1.5 hours into it, he said, (with sweat pouring off every part of his body) "I just came out here to mess around, I didn't expect to catch anything!" Wrong -- he also landed one about 180 today. Almost everybody had a nice tuna, and the few that didn't, still have plenty of time and the spirits are high. Till tomorrow Q105 crew out: Joe, Cal, Travis L, Tim, Travis J, Kelvin, Chris, and Cappy!!!!!

Wednesday, 1/09/08:  Well today looked like it was going to be one of those days to write home about. It was, but not in the way we wished.  We started the day off seeing good sign of life, birds, porpoise and fish on the electronics.  Our first stop of the day produced a 180 lb Yellowfin tuna wrestled in by John Loftus. A great start to any day.  When all was said and done, John's tuna was the biggest, and the only tuna! The weather is beautiful and with the great conditions, our hopes are high on catching more. It's wonderful to be on the ocean with a great group of fisherman/gals! We will be arriving at our next destination tomorrow around 10:30 A.M. Reports from this area have gotten better and better. As always, wish us luck and good fish'n'. Bonus fish of the day goes to Dan Sunderland landing a nice Wahoo. Tight lines, till tomorrow Q105 crew out!!!!!

Tuesday, 1/08/08: Today was our last day of prep. We made some leaders for the kite, and made sure everybody was ready for battle with giant yellowfin tuna. They are and so are we. After a few days of travel everyone is on the edge of their seats and just waiting to go! We hope the area we are going to is as good as last time we were there (last April). Wish us luck. Today after lunch it was more raffles. Big winners were Jason Noah, winning a Diawa reel, and John Fike won a Diawa rod. Big winner was Jackie Fitzpatrick winning a custom wrapped Seeker XXH rod. She already has a reel on it and is going to break it in tomorrow. So far the ladies have swept the big prizes! We would like to say hi and wish a speedy recovery to our crewmember Grant, who had knee surgery on Monday, wish you were here buddy, get well soon! Till, tomorrow Q105 crew OUT!!

Monday, 1/07/08: Today we were still on our way south getting all our gear in order. We added some line to our ground tackle so we could sit in some deeper water. After some supper cleanup and maintenance to the boat, the anglers got ready for battle against some biggens! Our chartermasters gave away more "stuff". Big winner of the day was Beth Smith, winning a custom wrapped Seeker XXH rod that will come in handy in the next week or so. Tom Kelleher was also lucky winning a Daiwa reel. Today's winners won leader storage bags, sleeping bags, line, knifes, pliers and also some nice waterproof storage bags! "Everybody" won some sort of prize. After a great tri-tip dinner and strawberry shortcake dessert, it was time to get some kite baits. We stopped for about an hour or so and scored some nice squid for the tunas to munch! One more day of rigging, resting, some movies and of course a poker game or two, the we will be on our fishing area. Till tomorrow, Q105 crew -- OUT!!OUT!!

Sunday, 1/06/08:  Hello Q105 friends, we hope everybody had a great holiday season. After some time off for Xmas and the turn of the new year, we are back! We departed Saturday for our Loftus and Martin 15 day trip. With John Loftus and Larry Martin as charter masters, we headed south. These guys are the best at what they do. With goodies for everybody, including the crew and plenty of line for all to use. They also have a raffle every day with EVERYONE winning a prize! From fillet knives, sleeping bags, spools of line, and of course rod and reels, these guys are very good! We loaded bait in the rain on Saturday and spent Sunday doing chores and building new gaffs with high hopes of using the all. The weather is very nice and is way better then what we are hearing about at home. For now we are traveling to points way down south. Wish us luck and keep watching the website as we will update everyday. The Q105 crew: Joe, Cal, Travis L, Tim, Travis J, Kelvin, Cris, and Cappy.
